My little radio shack meter worked just fine, as did some other meters I used to check the SWR. I got the beam at 50 feet and the SWR was flat on 1, 20 and 40 without a analyzer. With this Sirio 4 element beam and about 550 watts, I've been able to talk skip all over the US on AM and SSB with no problem and had a great time doing it. This is what can be done with the bear minimum and still get the lowest SWR possible and have a lot of fun in the process. Thanks for watching.

Adjust the SWR with the gamma match, I used some old SWR meters... they did just fine, I now have a MFJ Antenna Analyzer, which should give a more accurate SWR reading with all of my antennas. A friend of mine now has this beam antenna, and it's still working great ! it's about 50 feet up and has no problems with ice, or strongs winds, a very well made antenna. I definitely recommend this beam, It's low cost, easy to adjust, and very strong. And it has great ears. As far as transmit goes... It really gets out. Sirio makes a great beam, get the 4 element, it's better than the 3 element. 73's...

Try a 3ft jumper from gamma match to meter then run a "straight" uncoiled length of coax to the radio & rubber band the mic to transmit. Set the beam on a milk crate pointed Straight up to the Sky then Loosen both clamps on gamma rod & bracket then adjust gamma match & bracket to various increments on ch 40 then see what it reads on 20 & 1. The instructions on gamma match just put you in the ballpark so take your time in tuning them. SWR will read the same on ch1 & 40 when it's in perfect tune. Take your Time tuning requires Patients. @@paulhotson5820 3 ft intervals in various lengths of coax 3,6,9,12,15, & so on is the standard & will keep everything including reflected power in phase & matched properly. So if your antenna reads 1.1 at the antenna using a 3ft jumper then it will read the same at the radio end of the overall coax length. I always use RG-213 coax for base installation's & RG8-X for mobile installs.

@@miguelsalami If an antenna has a perfect match at the feed point, a half wavelength in coax will repeat that match but with velocity factors running between about .66 and .85 for most modern coax, a half wavelength in coax could land between 11.88ft and 15.3ft. Not 18ft. Any length of coax should not change you're Standing Wave, if it does you might be getting RF going down the outside of the coax acting as the antenna and changing the SWR. The solution would be to make a coaxial RFchoke/Balun, 6 to 8 turns of coax under feed point of your antenna tie wrapped together. Once the RF is removed from flowing down the outside of the line, the real SWR mearsurement can be taken.

@@paulhotson5820 You may get as technical as you like with your velocity factors & coiling coax but as long as the antenna is tuned "at the antenna" & 3ft intervals of coax used for the entire length "the match" should be the same at both ends.

this is y it pays to use a antenna analyzer to tune antenna and not a radio shack meter so you can see the band width of resonance and adjust from thee

Those SWR numbers look pretty damn good to me. I guess your looking for a flat SWR from 1 thru 40. Your doing the test with the antenna 4 ft above ground, Put the Siri’s up I’m sure you’ll be happy!

I wouldn't worry about water getting into the joint between the boom halves, as there's RF been carried by the boom. I'd be more worried about water getting into the gamma match or coax connector, etc.

The instructions that come with the beam clearly explain how long the gamma match needs to be for 27 megahertz; To adjust the SWR you simply make the gamma match longer or shorter, its best to do this when the beam is at least 10 feet off the ground.

I would like to know how many inches do I have to pull out the gamma and where to fix the sliding part? I can’t seem to get mines under an swr of 3. I’ve slide the gamma all the way out to the point I couldn’t slide it anymore and I slide it in half inch at a time to see if I could find the right spot and I haven’t had any luck. Any suggestions? Can you send a pic of your gamma so I can see better where yours is at maybe I can go from there bc this is driving me nuts. I had a person come help that has much more experience and he left more frustrated than me. Would love some help but clear and easy instructions.

You have to slide the gamma bar out till you get 50 ohms then when you get 50 ohms lock the gamma bar in place and then slide the little slider back and forth to adjust swr them lock it down

Remember like a bird opening their wings to fly, the higher the longer it needs to be. Your SWR will drop on the higher end when raised. Remember verticals have a lower take off angle than horizonal better for skip and locals but more noise. I RAN A moonraker 4 for many years that was both and found vertical better for DX. HAM beams are too long to do vertical.

Hung with a new rope and you'd still complain! Highest SWR 1.3 on 40, Lowest 1:1 on 1 and 1.2 on 20? Gud gawd Gerty what do you want with a basement output radio; and, on a Radidio Hut meter. Put some power to it! Likely 1.0:1 across the breath. Don't get me wrong now, I've 5 SWR meters and RadHut, just like yours, is among the them and I'd still rate it #10

When I made that video , that was all I had to work with ! and years ago, that's about all everyone had before antenna analyzers came along. Also, unlike a lot of guys out there, I do not know everything about antennas, coax, amps, raidos .. etc. etc... all I know is that I enjoy learning how all of this stuff works, and I'm having a lot of fun in the process. Hubs look like the junk that use to come with the old Avanti Moonrakers which were notorious for bursting when tightened. Maco is much better quality and are Made In The USA their Shooting Star Beam is a much better quality product than any of the old Avanti ever were.
