Sirius Yacht's Torsten Schmidt gives part one of his four-part tour of the Sirius 310 DS. She might only be 31ft, but she has the interior volume of a much larger yacht and exhibits the same care and attention to detail that goes into her as her bigger sisters.

I like how everything is at the eye level and easily accessible. At the highest floor level you have the table, helm/nav station and door. Then at the lower level there's the galley and stowage around the helm. At the lowest level - sitting on the floor - you have more stowage around and under the floor. And great view outside, whether you're sitting or standing. Apart from that, no empty unused space left, easy to brace yourself or reach anywhere but also to move around, and not cramped. I like this boat 😏

Oh, I didn't expect you to pin my comment:)) Anyway, I'm not a sailor (maybe I will be some day?), I just like sailboats (and clever ideas) and watch KZbin. I couldn't find any other boat with similar clever layout, instead I got a few questions to be cleared: How does the deck saloon affect structural strength and stability of the boat? Some people say it's less strong than the traditional layout, and it certainly raises the center of gravity. What about water slamming into the saloon windows in bad weather? They aren't as big as in Moody's or old motorsailors, but still they need to be quite strong. (I heard you use bulletproof glass, right? This reminds me of Tesla Cybertruck:) Would you ever make a boat with a scow bow? I think it wouldn't fit your design philosophy (water slapping into the bottom of the hull, more affected by waves etc.), but anyway what do you think? It definitely gives some more space at the bow.

@@pmj_studio4065 thanks for your compliments. I am glad you like it! Interestingly the centre of gravity is actually much lower than on many conventionally built yachts as in them you usually have sallow bilges in the saloon area and the heavy stuff has to go elsewhere. In a Sirius you will find tanks, batteries and drinks and foot supplies in the very centre of the boat and the light weight stuff above. As I also do not like centre cockpits and cockpits towering high above huge aft cabins our master cabins are not in the aft and our cockpit can be very low above the waterline for little motion. The saloon is on exactly the same level as the low cockpit and is indeed a quite calm place to be in rough weather conditions. With this we are usually looking up to other similar sized modern boats in the harbour as at least their Sprayhoods are much higher than our decks house

@@pmj_studio4065 It is indeed structurally more complex to build a deck saloon yacht but if solidly built it could be much more strong than an open-space-plan-boat as you have more vertical and longitunal bulkheads to strengthen the otherwise “empty” mid-section of the boat. As we are building ocean-going-cruisers since 49 years now, there has gone a lot of thought into every little detail and solid built quality is one of the strength we are most known for. If you like have a look to the video of the building process: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGjYoZmbiKx9rbc

@@pmj_studio4065 Thanks for this question about the windows. Yes, this was an important point in the design spreadsheet. As we are building ocean-going-cruisers since 49 years now, there has gone a lot of thought and calculation into every little detail. The saloon windows in particular are in use by us since 1988 on every deck saloon yacht we built and have circumnavigated the world a number of times, without any window failures. This particular Sirius has been sailed all the way from Germany through the Atlantic, Panama Canal, through the Pacific, via Micronesia and Hawaii to Vancouver by their owners. They are made from toughened security glass with an own certification for world-wide sailing (without the additional use of shutter blinds). They are up to 10mm thick and it is a fully glued in construction bolted trough an aluminium frame work with hundreds of 6mm bolts as well. The recess they are sitting in is a 25mm wide part of the GRP deck and the inner aluminium frame overlaps the same with on the inner side. The only way to destroy them, if you really try all you can, is using this very sharp and pointed hammers you find in busses and trains, but you will struggle to make an impact. Compared to windows in bigger boats, catamarans and commercial vessels this windows are very small ;-). As for testing the hull windows and door material: How about a 140kg body builder working on the portholes with a new axe? We made this test some 6 years ago and I will make sure to post the pictures on Facebook soon! They are made out of the same bulletproof material used for police and military cars...but ours is 12mm!

@@pmj_studio4065 as for the scow bow, that is indeed not compatible with a boat which should have good all-round sailing performance and the weight of a solid built cruising yacht. Sound and shock of slamming into waves up wind and slapping in harbour and at anchor would not be too nice for comfort

I absolutely agree about the visibility. I have seen so many yachts with appalling visibility unless you are outside completely exposed to elements.

Well, the point is....even on a Sirius, you could still choose to be cold and wet and miserable outside ;-)

5 days until Publishers Clearing House draws their next winners. I know exactly what I would do with a windfall. Put that wind to good use! Just probably the best boat for a single handler to circumnavigate with. A 35 and 40 are just that much better, but I would love to sail one of these around the world, several times.

Unbelievable spacious for just 31 ft. There was an older type in the harbor next to me, and the was much more space than on my 41ft steel ketch.

Thank you very much. I am glad you like it! She is indeed very spacious. PBO`s (Practical Boat Owner´s) verdict in 2011 was: “This is an amazingly big little yacht in which everything has been thought through with exceptional thoroughness and put together with obvious skill and care. It would take a week of testing and a report long enough to fill an entire magazine to do her justice. Despite the Teutonic logic and precision that underlies behind every aspect of the design, however, she does exude a certain charm. … She offers so many big-boat features in terms of quality, space, attention to detail and scope for customisation that I suspect a lot of people will decide there’s really no need to buy anything bigger.”

I had a real problem when displaying her at the Southampton boat show in 2010. There was a Yachting monthly test of our Sirius 35 DS just out, very prominently asking on the title page of the boat show issue of the magazine: "Is this the best boat ever built" and giving us the "...highest score we’ve ever awarded, by some distance". Nearly everybody coming out of the 310 DS on display at the show commented on how unbelievable the space was we got into this 35 feet boat. It "kind of tiring" to point out to all this visitors, that this was the 310 they just have seen and not a 35 ;-)
