In Part 2 of our Journey with the Sirius 35 DS we are sailing in beautiful weather conditions from our awesome anchorage in front of Langenwerder "round Poel" to the harbour of Kirchdorf. In Kirchdorf we had stormy weather conditions, nevertheless we explored this beautiful island. Later we had to sail back to Heiligenhafen in rough conditions.

I have s question or two. U sailed many diferent boats,how does sirius perform under sail compared to other sailboats u tryed? Is she much slower becouse of her weight? Is it much hassle to tack with genoa becouse of the jib? Can u do it alone or do you need help? Nice vid👍

Dear Klemen Prezelj, thank you very much for your comment. The Sirius 35 DS performed very well under sails. No doubts, first of all she is a real sailboat and yes with a comfy decksaloon... It is easy to tack the genoa (we had an electric furler) although she had the self tacking jib (two forestays). Single handed is no problem.

Well, its solidly built so not on the racy, light weight side but the hull/keel/ruder/rig design is as a modern cruiser/all-rounder/comfort in heavy weather/fun to sail design. If it is of interest: The 15 or so sailing magazines testing her had obviously been pleased: Yachting Monthly: „Is this the best boat ever built?“, "It`s the highest score we’ve ever awarded, by some distance" (still valid), "the Sirius 35 DS is the best cruiser he’s ever tested.“ "8 out of 10 points in sailing performance(Chris Beeson), Bootshandel: “I was totally awestruck by the small tacking angles we achieved. To convince myself, I checked the results by tacking over and over again. She tacks through less than 80°", Palstek: “The Sirius 35 DS is not only convincing as a high quality, seaworthy and well equipped cruiser, but also is agile and easy to handle even in strong gale conditions. The benefit of the so called "solent rig" is, that you still have a proper sized jib, which could be sailed from 3-3,5 beaufort on, with enough sail area to have fun with it. ....and have the big genny at hand as well, without effort for changing sails, other than furling the new sail out and the old one in within 2 minutes from and without leaving the cockpit. Than the jib still sits on a furling reefing system and could be made much smaller, when the wind excides 7 beaufort. The down side is, that you can´t tack the genny though the gap, but either have to furl it, in and out, while tacking or gybe it though. This works pretty good, but is work, thought ...but than one have to see: as a cruising sailor, you would try not to set your course against the wind all the time or are on long tacks. If you have to tack constantly, the jib is the better choice anyhow, or if it´s that little of wind, furling the genny in a tack is not that much work at all. This said: the second forestay is an option. As standard it comes with just one stay and you could compliment your jib or smaller genua with an additional light wind sail if you like

Moin Daniel. Vielen Dank für deine Nachricht. Über ein ausführliches Video mit dem Vergleich der 35 DS zu unserer 310 DS aus unserer Sicht haben wir uns auch schon Gedanken gemacht. Ein schöner Urlaubsbericht, danke dafür ! Ich habe ja schon auf euer 2. Video gewartet, endlich mal ein Alltagsbericht über eine Sirius, ich liebe dieses Konzept. Ich selbst habe vor, in 2 Jahren mal für eine Zeit "auszusteigen" und liebäugle mit einer DS40, die ich höchstwahrscheinlich kommenden Frühling dann bestellen werde. In punkto Qualität sind diese Boote ja über jeden Zweifel erhaben, eine Frage stellt sich mir aber: Habt ihr im Decksalon Probleme mit schwitzenden oder beschlagenen Fenstern gehabt?

Lieber Christian, vielen Dank für deinen Kommentar und falls Du tatsächlich eine Sirius 40 DS für eine Auszeit unter Segeln anschaffen kannst, dann hierzu herzlichen Glückwunsch. Auch wir finden Konzept und Qualität der Boote fantastisch ! Da wir auf "unserem" Boot doppelt verglaste Scheiben im Salon hatten (bis auf die beiden zu öffnenden Fenster) hatten wir trotz 5 Leuten und meist Schmuddelwetter keinerlei Probleme mit Schwitzwasser. Unseres Wissens ist die Doppelverglasung optional, würden wir allerdings unbedingt dazu nehmen. Viele Grüße von der ganzen Sailingsomeday Crew!

Schön, das Ihnen das Boot gefällt! Schwitzwasser tritt ja eben nur bei unzureichender Isolierung auf. Da ist Holz grundsätzlich mal ein gutes Material. Kommt aber auf die Ausführung dahinter an: Bei Sirius sind Rumpf und Deck als Sandwichlaminat mit 20 bzw. 30mm Dyvinilcellschaum ausgeführt, dann folgen weitere Isolierung so das z.B. die Decken am Ende eine Gesamtstärke von bis zu 80mm haben. Einige Holzplatten sind zusätzlich von hinten mit G4 versiegelt. Ich habe selbst schon einige Wintermonate an Bord verbracht (zuletzt um den Gefrierpunkt im Jan/Feb in Seattle/Vancouver) und wir haben einige Kunden in England/Norwegen/Schweden die das ganze Jahr über an Bord leben (für diesen Einsatzzweck bauen wir ja schon seit 50 Jahren ;-). Schwitzwasser gibt es dort lediglich mal bei älteren Deckssalonyachten an den an den Metallrahmen der Luken (heute sind auch die aus Kunststoff). Unsere Matratzenauflagen sind extra aus unlackiertem Holz (und darüber belüftet). Ohne all diese Isolierungen und mit viel GFK oder Kunststoffbeschichteten Platten oder Aluminium wäre das eine ganz andere Problematik
