In February 1994 Peter Phillips and the Tallis Scholars performed on the 400th anniversary of the death of Palestrina in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome, where Palestrina had trained as a choirboy and later worked as Maestro di Cappella.

Background story of the choral piece and church holding this performance. Understand this composition was banned from being published and that choral groups passed the score to the next group to perform. Mozart, when an early teenager, heard a performance within the Sistine Chapel. He went back to his lodging and wrote it down from memory, all 12+ minutes for all singers!! He went back to another performance in the Sistine later that week and found, "no adjustments needed"!! This major church in Rome was built based on a dream by an early pope who had a dream that an angel spoke "Build a church where it will snow tomorrow".! Well this was early August in Rome where snow is unknown in August!! Well it did and this church was built in the late 400's AD!! Ain't history amazing???

That is a prime example for the human voice being the most beautiful and powerful instrument we have. What a divine rendition of Allegri’s masterpiece ❤ I’m in total awe.

Peter Phillips body of work places him among the greats. I shudder to think without Peter's work, I would have never heard most of the great masters work through the ages. Please return to Saint Peter in Chains in Cincinnati soon.

I've been looking for this for months without knowing the name of the composition of the performers. I back-tracked my memory and found the forum thread where I originally saw it posted. I am so thankful I was able to track it down. The use of the room acoustics and the pitch-perfect singers make for an absolutely stunning twelve minutes. Thank you for posting this!

I discovered the Tallis Scholars years ago when I went in search of any remaining Castrotti singers. I was told if they did there might be one or two having been with the Scholars. The man with the high falsetto would be him, no vibrato. Maybe, but doubtful, either way incredible.

Lenten music - good any time of the year. Thank Mozart for his talent of bringing it to the masses. I've been to Santa Maria Maggiore. I wish that I could have heard this performance; for two choirs, beautifully presented; great tonal quality as mentioned by Rodna. The sound of angels(for us) - Lord have mercy on us. Our God is a gentle One. I am grateful! , eternally.

In Europe, when women were not permitted to sing in church or cathedral choirs in the Roman Catholic Church, boys might be castrated to prevent their voices breaking at puberty and to develop a special high voice. The first documents mentioning castrati are Italian church records from the 1550s. In the baroque and classical music eras these singers were highly appreciated Allegri's Miserere and other famous pieces from this period now sung by sopranos and countertenors were written for castrati.

As a visual artist I feel Miserere as a masterwork that has the sonic resonance of the souls deepest calling an overlay of texture / color, a visual Hymn of holy ground presented in this Basilica. One is moved by the soul's sense of being called to enter Holy Ground

Interesting comments, spqa2004. Return to the level of faith that inspired this beautiful music and these concerns would go away because there would be more families and more pro-creation. Is it too late for this era? It's hard to tell but the world has been through many bumps since this piece was composed and here we are enjoying it. I am thankful just to have heard it, and I hope to sing it someday with my church choir.
