I’ve been watching a lot of your videos since buying my 2006 xc70 d5 and have learned a lot and gained the confidence to change my aux belt and tensioner. ABS rings are next up this morning. I’m not aware of having any VNT issues, but for someone who doesn’t really have a solid understanding of how engines work, I’m picking up little bits of knowledge with every video I watch. Thanks.
@10MilMoto4 ай бұрын
Amazing video, thank you. My issue is with the line connected from the solenoid the VNT arm drops all the way down and the car shuts off. Disconnect the vac line, the car idles fine with no boost.

Excellent information as always. I have owned my V70 D5 AWD Auto for over 1,5 year and driven over 35000km I think, with almost 35k Swedish Miles behind. Your videos have helped me a lot on this car, doing all the repairs myself as I have done on my previous 3 Volvos. Though I've had a couple of annoying problems with the car since I first got it. Took me a year to find out that it was the lower right engine mount under the crank pulley was separated, led to an annoying tire sound (and wear) every left turn. And there is something with the boost preassure which I havn't solved yet. Hesitation, delay just when you would expect the boost to begin smooth, it kicks in instead. Have had the code ecm 6805 wich puts the car in limp home and engine service required message. (Svenska: Motorservice erfodras). Restart the car and it's back on "normal". When engine cold and accelerating from standing still, this problem happen to completely disappear and the car runs really nice. Worth mention, AWD models have the space occupied underneath the turbo, unfortunately! Thanks

Hi, I've made some further investigation on my car. Atmospheric sensor 970hpa idling, Seems Ok I guess? Intake manifold pressure idling, somewhere between 800-850 hpa. Pulling a mild vakuum doesn't it? Edit: Had a pressure on almost 2000hpa when full accelerating, varm engine. Good and as I expected.
@leumasen1564 жыл бұрын
Hi, am a bit thrilled as I finally made progress on this one. I purchased a CRC Carb & EGR cleaner. Gave it a careful treatment by spraying it into the intake hose on the Lmm and then reving the engine. Didn't help at all I think. Instead I took off the intake hose on the turbo, and with the can upside down (can works in every direction) I put the small pipe into the turbo and sprayed. Let it sit for a while before driving. After two treatments and some driving I can say without doubt that it helped a lot! Accelerating is more controlled and smooth. Still a tiny bit of "kick" as the vanes is not entirely free, should help by spraying more and driving. This seem to have improved the travel of the vnt actuator arm, as it is a big difference at low revs.

A few years later..Just removed my turbo off my Freelander 1 TD4...checked the turbo actuator using my vacuum gauge...it moves immediately but noticed that it 'catches'/sticks in a couple of places...thinking this could be the result of 'stuck' vanes..? off up the garage right now to have a look at it.

I have the exact same symptoms, only sometimes the engine has no power on lower rpms but then suddenly the boost kicks in. I tried a turbo cleaner diesel additive and it seems to have worked nice

I always look for vacuum problems that can send error codes like P0102 throwing all the system off, engine mounts being the first port of call, I use Wynns injection clean fuel additive to 40 litres of fuel that helps clean injectors try doing say at least a long run 15 miles & notice the difference,

I’ve got a riddle three mechanics haven’t been able to solve. Twin turbo navara, high pressure turbo stays in open position after a run upto 80. Come to a stop and no boost pressure until second turbo at 2400rpm. Battery disconnect resets and does it again.

Hi Simon another Great video But you do need to tell people that the 30+ PSI you are seeing is including 14.7 atmosphere pressure , or all with car problems will think they have a bad turbo, Thanks Dave

Genuine question. Have you watched the video? 1:07 I show the caption saying "The maximum boost pressure is 2090 hPa in absolute pressure. 2:50 I say total pressure from the MAP. As you know, the MAP is an absolute pressure sensor. 5:14 I show two different gauges. One is absolute one is boost. 7:20 different gauges are shown again to illustrate what to look for.

This helps a lot. My friend owns a 2004 V70 D5 with 596.000km on the clock and he has turbo issues. We checked all the tubes und mounts for leaks and found none. Found a faulty TCV behind the intake hose and now it responds better, but still the real boost only kicks in at 3000rpm and tends to ooverboost a bit. The VNT mechanism works as long as we use our little manual vacuum pump. After fixing the TCV we now have a constant ticking noise from the engine. My guess is now, that its either the turbo itself or a faulty vacuum pump (also the source of the noise). All the vacuum hoses are pretty oily on the inside, could a defective vacuum pump be the cause?
@sirobb3 жыл бұрын
Use a vacuum tester directly on the vacuum pump as suggested in the video link I provided in your other comment. That will first of all tell if the pump is producing enough constant and stable vacuum. Also, with everything connected, view the VNT action whilst revving as shown in this video. Regardless of the vacuum reading from the pump, if the pump is noisy then it may well need replacing but if it is producing full vacuum and there is still lack of boost, either the VNT is sticking or boost is being lost through a leak in the intake system or the MAF or MAP or fuel pressure readings aren't correct. Low fuel pressure could be just a clogged filter. You have to test everything carefully and not just change parts by guessing.

Hi, Fantastic video and Great tips. You made it in a very easy to understand and follow way. Can you tell me which OBD device and which app you were using in this video, Please?. I followed your links to your Amazon site and there are two OBD's listed (well as far as I could see anyway) and there are so many apps to choose from esp with one, it made my mind boggle???. Also, I have a Saab 93 and a traction control esp warning has illuminated. Would this dongle and app tell me which sensor or corner is playing up? (eg:- front nearside ABS no signal. Or something like that). If can help with any info I would be very grateful indeed. Many Thanks, Leon. :-) Ps. where did you get that very handy wheel centre removal/sucker tool from. The arm however was only moving 5-10mm max with the engine running at various revs up to 3000 as it wont rev past that. Viewing the actual boost figure with live data is a good start. Also what is the MAP reading with just ignition on, at idle and the maximum figure out on the road. Also don't change parts without testing as most can be eliminated easily with cheap equipment.

@Jnn Nkc Do you have an official workshop manual or data from the same engine from say a Ford forum? The idle pressure is fine but the pressure at full throttle would be high on some cars. It may be correct for yours though. Have you viewed the VNT operation when all connected up and revving the engine like in this video? You have massive overboost so no wonder you're getting codes. You have to be certain your entire vacuum and boost system pipework is air leak free for correct VNT operation. Also check the large diameter ribbed elbow shaped pipe for collapsing or tears and the intercooler for oil residue and distortion.
