I had the opportunity to see Little Eva perform this song live just a few months before she passed away and it was an event that will not be easily forgotten. She was just a small frame of a girl but she was filled with more energy that any performer I have ever seen...

Occasionally, we used to get to dance in gym class. When this song played, we all got up and danced the locomotion all around the gym. The sixties were fun!
@samantharoberts1036 Жыл бұрын
I love this song! When I was eight years old my dance class had a recital using this as the backing track. It was the most fun I'd ever had. According to my mother I was the only kid who not only remembered the dance, but freestyled it! Apparently when my coach confronted me about changing the moves I said, "Don't blame me, blame the locomotion!" The two of us still laugh about it to this day. I kind of wish I'd stayed in tap dancing! Music is so powerful, how can anyone stand still hearing it?
@beatricefogarty119611 ай бұрын
What s cute story, I van picture it and you. If you can, please describe the steps to the locomotion as I don't remember seeing specific moves. When it first came out I just made steps up. I know arms would move with elbows in small wheels turning motion, but what should legs do? Lol.

Little Eva's death. "She continued performing until she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in October 2001. She died on April 10, 2003 in Kinston, North Carolina, at the age of 59,[1] and is buried in a small cemetery in Belhaven, North Carolina." (Wikipedia). Little Eva lived in obscurity much of her life and her death was barely noticed. May she Rest In Peace.

The sad part is the story behind her grave marker. Turns out for years her grave was unmarked. White wooden cross marks it now with a local Belhaven, NC club making a appropriate maker for her now featuring a train on it with the phrase “She sings with the angels”. She was a maid for Carol King and her husband Gerry Goffin. They wrote the song for her because of a dance she created and showed to their kids while babysitting. And the rest as they say is history.

Talk about a song with legs ... that song is just as fun now as it was the day it was recorded. A birthday party staple. It's one of those few songs that you'll see a 90 year old great grandmother dancing with her 8 year old great granddaughter with and all ages between. 60 years on.
@papercup25178 жыл бұрын
OK, my memory of this one is at Sarah Pritchard-Carr's 10th birthday party. We were all dancing to this, and to Chubby Checker's 'Let's Twist Again' - all the current hits. We were all learning the Twist but I don't think any of us knew how to dance the Locomotion, so we just sort of played trains to the music. Then we went downstairs for tea. It was a huge spread, the most amazing things to a 10 year old (her family were bakers). One by one, we literally made ourselves sick from eating too many cream cakes, before our parents arrived to take us home. Happy days.

The story behind this song is as good as the song itself. Little Eva was baby sitting for Carole King and Gerry Goffin - they thought her dance moves were cool, and they wrote "Loco-Motion" (originally for another vocalist). Apparently Don Kirschner heard Eva's demo, they changed singers - and the rest is history. It's the type of story that's hard to believe, but apparently this one is true. Being at the right place at the right time is often as important as talent, but having both is pure gold.

I don't have one those "meeting the love of my life" stories.....that happened twenty years later. I missed the Rock'n'Roll craze and these later dance craze records- we were down on the farm and my parents said all that stuff was rubbish. Started listening in 1964 at thirteen, by 1970 it was all gone to hell and i was backtracking to those great fifties, early sixties sounds. I walked in the Anchor pub after work in 1973 when a slew of old records were being reissued, just as I came in the door the opening riff of this record came on the jukebox. Not sure if I'd heard it before, but I remember the thrill to this day. One of the greatest, most exciting dance records ever. One day I really have to learn that dance.

The opening choreography with the guys and dolls makes it look like a metaphor. Clean and fantastic.

Little Eva in 1962 ...so fortunate that this video is available. What wonderful talent! I hope someone produces a movie about her life.

John, you won't see that again in our lifetime. I love the Black female singers and groups of the sixties. The sixties and seventies were probably the greatest two decades of all time. If you lived it...you know what I mean.

That song was composed and written by Carol King and Gerry Goffin. At that time this little black teenage was working for them as a maid and babysiter. A studio wanted to record a demo of the song but without a signer, at the last minute the couple decided to ask Little Eva to come at the studio to record the song. She did it so well that it was decided that she will do the final recording. The rest is history.

Why didn't Carole King sing the demo? She had a good singing voice having sung several songs that became hits.
