Ironic that Siskel said the Academy wouldn't award Anthony Hopkins the Oscar two years in a row but this was the year that Tom Hanks would win his first of back-to-back Oscars.
@JRRLewis3 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with Siskel that the one who deserved it that year for best actor was Anthony Hopkins in The Remains of the Day--not a flashy role but one that showed extraordinary nuance and detail and was pretty unique in its "everything under the surface" restraint. I also agree with them that Ralph Fiennes deserved the supporting actor award for his remarkable performance in Schindler's List. It's a shame that the Academy has yet to reward such an excellent actor.

Oh man, Letterman was so much better with these two. Leno has always been hacky. Letterman knew how to play with these guys.

Was pleased that Tommy Lee Jones won best supporting actor such a great actor, and it is easy sometimes to overlook that kind of film and performance. I did find Leno a bit repetitive after awhile in this clip.

I tried to adjust the tracking 7:32 for about 25 seconds, before realizing that I was on my computer. I've smoked myself into a happy place. I REALLY needed it. Have a great one, everybody. I probably won't survive the next year, but I'll make most of these days count. Whoa. I got side-tracked. I love watching these Siskel & Ebert videos. They always take me back to when I was a kid, and reality wasn't so in-your-face, and harsh, and unfiltered. I have a five year old, and she shares my love of horror movies! I know that when I die, part of me will still be alive in her. She is literally a chemical composite of both me and her mother. I just hate that she will be losing her dad, while she's at such an early age. It's unjust, it's unfair, and it's nightmarish that I won't be able to watch her grow up, that I won't be able to be there for her and support her, both emotionally and financially. Yeah, side-tracked once again. Thanks for uploading this. I only found out I had a grade 4 gliobastoma, and a one year time limit, it really changed my comments, in certain comment sections. I'm just speaking the truth. I want to create as many memories and videos with my daughter as I possibly can, so that she can one day go back and relive a moment, only on a more personal level, as I do when I watch Siskel and Ebert. She is my entire world.

Compare the zombie-like way Leno handles these two (who always had a lot to say and always did it entertainingly) with how Letterman handled them and it’s impossible not to notice that Letterman was, by far, the better host.

Leno seemed like a guy who did not want to be there trying to pretend that he did.
@AngusRockford3 жыл бұрын
@@jedijones Leno was one of my favorite guests on Letterman’s show before he started guest hosting for Carson, because he came across as snarky, dgaf, and somewhat anti-establishment, or, at least, anti-“showbiz.” As soon as he sniffed big mainstream opportunities, he dropped that facade like a hot potato and became the ultimate conformist network tool. That was bad enough, but the shit he pulled to sabotage Letterman and Conan was just fucking evil.

They were pretty right on, except that Anna Paquine, who ended up winning the supporting actress category, didn’t even get mentioned.
@StealthMaster866 жыл бұрын
Apart from Best Supporting Actress, they were spot on. Anna Paquin won for The Piano.
@neworleansguy105 жыл бұрын
StealthMaster86 I don’t think hardly anyone predicted Paquin. Of the “Big 7” categories, Supporting Actress has certainly been the most unpredictable, with many, many actresses winning while they weren’t even among the Top 2 or 3 favorites. It’s even, on several occasions, gone to the darkest of horses widely considered to be the 4th or 5th ranking nominee in the category. Somewhere between the 90s and the early 2000s, Oscar prognostication went from being a quaint hobby to mainstream sport.

They were wrong about Michael Jordan. At the time, I heard many baseball people: some players, and announcers who were former players say how offended they were with Michael Jordan playing baseball. Tony Kubek said that Michael Jordan had not earned earned his baseball uniform and he was correct. The Bull and White Sox had the same owner, so Jordan gets to go directly to AAA, and with the big club in spring training. Reinsdorff said Jordan will be on the White Sox roster that April despite having a spring training which would send anyone else packing his bags. It was a disgrace, and the game of baseball was fortunate Jordan went back to basketball, where he belonged.
