These two guys staked out a place in entertainment history that has never been duplicated. It was lightning in a bottle when they formed that team. Audiences adored them. They were buddies and rivals and worked that shtick to the max. Great memories.

Roger Ebert - yes Gene Siskel - no
@andrewjensen81285 жыл бұрын
Siskel and Ebert both had habits of domineering conversations if not in a conversation with someone of equal wit. They were not trying to be bullies, but their acerbic natures were always apparent. When they are talking to people with similar wits it was a thing of beauty.

But Roger wasn't letting Conan speak and Conan probably has more wit, definitely comedic wit
@andrewjensen81282 жыл бұрын
@@AE-bm4no Conan certainly had more comedic wit or the potential for comedic wit. You are correct. They really should have let Conan speak. I wonder how Conan would handle this today. He was still relatively new to the role of host at the time.

It's BIGGER than that. We lost the morals and good tastes they 'forced' studios to impose...with that gone, in todays 'I do what I want' anything goes 'society' the critic is meaning less...because like every thing else - anyone can be one. Which they can't in fact.

..and less than 18 years later, Siskel and Ebert would both be dead, Conan would have received and then had stolen back from him the position of host of the Tonight Show, and Max's son would become the drummer for Slipknot. You know, Conan actually had Slipknot on to perform back when The Max Weinberg Seven were the band on his show.

10:42 While I just on general principle think ALL awards shows are silly, but Gene Siskel is right on the money here. If you buy into the fact that okay, we have these ceremonies anyway, literally the entire fucking point of them is SUPPOSED to be letting the "winners" have this spotlight put on them, and so what always happens? yep, they cut them off after 20 seconds. Sure, that's logical. If you bother to do these awards shows, it's flat out insulting that they try to rush the winners off stage. Them getting to have this solitary indulgent moment is WHY it's all happening to begin with. You should never hear a single note from the orchestra when a category winner is accepting their award.

At about 3:00 in, Ebert and Richter share some University of Illinois insider stuff. Gene makes some semi-heard comment about "real intellectual stuff" or something like that. Conan's response is to make a "went over my head" gesture. Let's get this out of the way: that's probably the only time anything goes over Conan's head. But the subtext here is that O'Brien is a *Harvard* man and is going for a great laugh at his expense. He's okay with being the dummy because he's got enough self-confidence to not get snarled up in anything. It's interesting that he's next to S&E who are sniping at each other like 10- and 12-year-old siblings. Who's being more mature, the journalists or the clown? For the record: I love S&E and I know that they're not - on the whole - immature people, it's just interesting to watch this all unfold with full context.
