Robert Forster is so great in Jackie Brown. It’s amazing when an actor can achieve a low key magnetism like that. Philip Baker Hall pulled off a similar feat in Hard Eight. It shows that you don’t have to be flashy to command attention.

I tried watching The Postman a couple times but just couldn’t do it. Remember watching the ending when it was on tv and thought the statue was pretty cheesy with the triumphant music in background.

I remember watching this episode on actual TV when it first aired. For some reason I enjoyed hearing them talk badly about The Postman. And Tarantino had become a hot name in movies so I was always interested to see what he did. I usually only got to watch this show if it was airing on a night that I didn't need to go to bed early. (It usually came on too late for me to watch on a school night) So I mostly remember watching it during Summer break, Spring break, and X-Mas/New Years break. This episode is from late December 97, so I must have been on holiday break from school to be able to watch it. So this show has a lot of nostalgic memories for me.

I remember going to see 'The Postman' at a multiplex on Christmas day. I walked out 30 minutes in. Not wanting to waste money on a pointless movie ticket, I went to see another movie that was already in progress- 'Titanic'. Luckily, I entered a the right time- the moment before the ship hit the iceberg (which is probably the best part of movie).

I'd rather see reviews of old movies than see the terrible movies being put out today.

Mr. Magoo. Spirits, Leslie Nielsen was SO miscast. Nielsen may be a master at farce comedy, but he had to play it like he did Airplane! and Police Squad! -- play it as if it's a Shakespearean drama and take everything seriously. Somewhere along the way, Nielsen started playing them as if they were comedies, and you lose a certain flavor. That's why I don't like the Naked Gun pictures as much as I like Police Squad. Yes, the Naked Gun movies are funny, but they are too obviously funny, and Police Squad was far more subtle -- and enjoyable. It was fun to just watch these characters play it straight and let the situation sell you the joke. The series did that. The movies did not. Nor does Mr. Magoo. Plus, the biggest problem is simple: Leslie Nielsen is NOT Jim Backus. Backus had a touch with the character that kept the cartoons interesting even when the stories were pathetic. Nielsen could not manage that in the movie. And Magoo was once funny. Originally, he was simply a closed minded old school aristocrat who would not be out of place in a 19th century farce (imagine a blind Montgomery Burns or maybe an old and blind Bertie Wooster). Magoo was a nasty old f__t who never let reality get in the way of how HE wanted reality to be. THAT was funny. It's not enough that Magoo walks into an alley thinking it's his old country club; he has to complain "They've changed the wallpaper without checking with the members!" Later, he practically became senile, and being blind became the ONLY joke. THAT was not funny. And the modern day recreations of Magoo just don't do him justice - I absolutely LOATHE the current series; the animation was terrible, the voice work wasn't trying, and the stories were crap. The only good latter-day cartoon series was The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo, which dropped the blind jokes and just had Famous Actor Magoo play numerous parts with a Magoo twist. That was great, but it didn't last long enough to become a classic.

The Postman was terrible, Mr Magoo is rather fun, Jackie Brown is the best movie Tarantino has done.

Couldn't agree more on Jackie Brown. Guilty soft spot for The Postman. Shmaltzy and bloated neo-western, but I like it's weirdly mundane premise in this big, dystopian world. They'd never attempt a film like this again, regardless of better or worse results.
@ttentionpls2 жыл бұрын
@Stephen Siegel Pulp Fiction is flashier, more fun and groundbreaking, but I still think Jackie Brown is a better round film. The best of Taratinos writing with the plotting of Leonard, in a way that sets it apart from the deluge of self-referential pop fodder that followed. Still a fan of his, though, and Pulp Fiction will always be iconic.
