yeah, it wasn't that good. it was oscar bait, and james coburn won a not very well deserved oscar for it. the 90's turned oscar bait into the norm.

Is it really alcoholism? There's a quote at the end about violence being passed down from father to son. We don't know what Coburn's father was like, but I'm guessing the Coburn character took his share of abuse, maybe worse, and thought this was the way to raise tough sons- after all didn't he turn out to be a real man? I'm not sure that's what the screenwriter was trying to convey, but I think that's the message intentional or not. The daughter sees Nick Nolte's character as a pretty evil dad, absent, capable of violence. Nolte's character sees himself as a nice guy, he mostly restrains his violent impulses and blames his father for what does escape. But the father didn't form out of a vaccuum. It's possible a little mental illness and alcoholism started the pattern with him, but that's very unlikely.

Yes I think You are right. There is a scene with the Coburn character in which he talks about his father dominating his mother, about a time when men were 'real men' and women knew their place. It's clear from that I think that the shadow of violent masculinity and brutality within the family still hangs over him too. Alcohol and drugs are merely by-products of that seemingly eternal dynamic.
@ImpulseGenerator3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd say the alcoholism is closer to a symptom than the disease itself. But it's definitely gravely exacerbating.

Typical of film critics to miss the point of a movie. There is literally a whole monologue narrated at the end that explains what the movie was about.

"...in what I assume is a realistic portrait of family violence". Not to speak ill of the dead but factoring in the way he both did his job and treated Roger, I'd say Gene knows exactly what an abusive existence looks like, be it on the giving or receiving end or both. Also I'm very glad Roger point blank asked Gene if he liked the film bc God knows Gene didn't make it easy to glean his opinion from that harangue.

Interesting . There was sometimes tension on that show. Ebert getting irritated with Siskel’s takedown of a Peter Fonda vehicle similar to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf . Never saw the film ,don’t recall the name but Siskel could have been right. Another time there was a film Roger Ebert thumbs downed and in recap Siskel urged Ebert to reconsider and thought he didn’t get it . Ebert burst out “ Am I not supposed to have any opinions on this show ? . “ Ebert made a valid point .
