Ebert and Roper review the upcoming sequel to Batman Begins "The Dark Knight".
Since I had posted Siskel and Ebert's review of Batman Mask of The Phantasm (The most under appreciated of all the Batman Movies) I thought it would be cool to post this review of the upcoming Dark Knight movie.
Richard Roper says that the film deserves a best movie oscar nomination

Unequivocally the best comic book movie ever, and I dare say it's also one of the best films of all time. It single handedly defines a genre, yet transcends it in ways that no other movie has done in recent memory. Its cultural significance is immeasurable. As good as it was when I saw it on release day in 2008, it's even better reflecting on it now. An absolute masterpiece.

"Single-Handedly" defined a genre? I don't know about that. If that were the case, all super hero movies going forward also would have been grounded efforts. But that just can't work for all super heroes. Whether we want to admit it or not, the movie that defined the genre going forward was The Avengers. Not as good as TDK (imo), but every super hero movie after it tried its best to make a cinematic universe.

It's sad that whenever an incredible timeless movie is made, there are so many people that seem to hate it, as if they can't stand the fact that something new is exceptional. What would you have cut? The narrative is air-tight and extremely compressed as it is. And there was never meant to be a 3rd film. This was intended to be Nolan's last film. That's why they had to complete the story. But yeah the voice was a problem.

@MrAkashvj96
@MrAkashvj96 9 жыл бұрын
Stephen .Mcabee They were never planning to make a 3rd film. In fact without Harvey's fall, none of the arcs in the Dark Knight would've been completed. The central idea of the film is that in a world where there is no justice, there' no way to fight the system without falling into corruption, apathy or worse. They show this through the 2-face character and Batman's flirtation with fascism also hinges on the idea that he was forced to kill Dent, breaking the one rule that separated him from the Joker. Same can be said for Commissioner Gordon. All the ideas of the film hinge on Two-face. This is the perfect example when a film completes the story it set out to tell. Nowadays all the superhero movies are just made to set up other superhero films and we get an endless chain of reboots and sequels. The Dark Knight works as a standalone. But really the length isn't important. The movie is never slow. The pacing is bludgeoning and there's a lot going on at once.

Heath Ledger is such a giant loss. He had such an amazing future ahead of him. So sad.

@Spengler56 in the same interview he said he was given the books but did not read them very thoroughly. He did live in that hotel room though.

Is the graphic novel more realistic? Usually when I think of movies staying true to the comic book, I think of George Clooney.

@Spengler56 funny enough, it's actually the other way around for the Joker adaptations. Jack read the books, and ledger didn't. He watched and analysed the film of Joker's origin: "The Man Who Laughs" and read up on historic anarchists and serial killers. The material relating to the books was conveyed completely through the script in which the Nolan brothers read the novels obsessively.

This was when he had been in the hospital for cancer. And there there where guest critics filling in for him, but the show was still called Ebert and Roeper...Thus the title in video too.

At this time back in 08, Roger Ebert left the show to undergoes his treatment for thyroid cancer. He was diagnosed in 07 and had his surgery the next summer. So Roeper started having guest reviewers on the show. Michael Phillips was on the most

@biggyshack If I remember, Ebert left the show 2 weeks before the review of The Dark Knight, that's why they didn't change the name. But don't worry, Ebert and Roeper are coming back again in 2011.

The dark knight is an amazing film, but after watching it a few times I have seen many flaws. Batman can fall of a building with his love interest in his arms and survive by landing on a car. The bank manager at the start can have a machine unloaded on him and he does not bleed. We never see the Joker leave the Wayne building after he crashes the party. I did love the film and all the cast, but these things and more make it seem a bit silly.

Detective work?You must have missed the beginning when he visits the bank after the robbery and they discuss the marked bills he's been providing to track the mob. Or a little later when they use a sonar program to plan the assault in Hong Kong. Perhaps you also missed a little later in the movie where he extracts a shattered bullet from the wall and using a computer model is able to trace the fingerprint.Or the end when he finds the Joker by wiretapping every phone in Gotham.

Phillips made a good point about the Joker, he's purposely NOT in the movie as much as we want, so that we end up wanting more.

I saw Dark Knight in its opening weekend. The best superhero film I've seen, along with Iron Man, since Spiderman 2 and IMO tops Spiderman 2. Ledger deserves an Oscar for the Joker! BTW I miss the "thumbs up" rating in Ebert and Roeper, don't know why they replaced it with "see it".

Miss this show especially the runtime of the reviews. There are some great KZbin reviewers but many of them have KZbin videos that are as long or longer than the shows they’re reviewing 😆

I agree. As much as I love the epicness of the Marvel First Ten Years complete with it's indelible finale, Endgame, I still think all those Marvel big deals are standing off to the side, looking at The Dark Knight with a single tear of envy in their proverbial eye.

I wish we could hear Roger Ebert's opinion on this film and wish him the best in his ongoing battle with thyroid cancer. Anyway, I think the two reviewers got it all right in this glowing review of the film. I would have to struggle hard to find anything wrong with this wonderfully-crafted and superbly-acted (especially Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning turn as the Joker) masterpiece.

@sirdoodlebug219 I think any problems with his action directing are compensated for by the fact that he uses mostly physical effects and he doesn't favour quick cuts and close ups in fight scenes so you get a good sense of what's going on. I think when you look at films like The Prestiege and Inception you can see his ability to handle very complex, multi-layered stories. I think you have to admire his ambition, at a time in hollywood wen alot of directors (studios more so) want to play it safe
