I miss watching Siskel and Ebert. That being said, I am not sure why Gene felt this way as he loved The Godfather as well as he loved Goodfellas. Carlito's Way was an amazing movie.

@Jack the Film Fanatic Scarface is primitive by comparison, Carlito's Way transcends it's material. The Untouchables is fun but ultimately a shallow film.

​@Jack the Film Fanatic Scarface wasn't as deep as it thought it was. It was beautifully shot with some great scenes, but Oliver Stone wrote deeper/better screenplays later on like Born on the Fourth of July and JFK.

@Jack the Film Fanatic Scarface didn't blur the line between violent gangsters and society as a whole like Carlito's Way. The latter film is highly cynical because what was being stated is, we all live in a society of want and there is no room for love.

Gene liked many of De Palma's films, just not this one or Scarface or Body Double. I had a mixed reaction to this film back in 93, I should check it out again because I often like De Palma's work.
