1995 is one of the great movie years of the last 4 decades, but you wouldn't really know it from the best picture nominations. Just off the top of my head, all of these were left out: Toy Story, Casino, Dead Man Walking, The American President, Leaving Las Vegas, Heat, Crimson Tide, Nixon, The Usual Suspects, Crumb... I'm sure I'm forgetting some too.

And don't forget Seven, which definitely could've gotten away with more than just one nomination for Editing. Or even Jumanji which could've been the third nomination for best visual effects, but instead the Academy chose to only nominate two movies that year.

It's strange looking back at the buildup to the Oscars that year and noticing that hardly anyone seemed optimistic about "Braveheart'" winning the top prize. It is precisely the kind of movie the Academy loves to shower with trophies. A conventional epic and a crowd-pleaser. By process of elimination, Mel Gibson looked to me like an obvious choice for Best Director (given that Ron Howard was overlooked). Robbins and Figgis did the best work but had no chance given that their films weren't nominated for Best Picture. Whereas Chris Noonan and Michael Radford were relatively unknown in Hollywood, without track records of success. Yet I still thought "Apollo 13" would win Best Picture. It turned out to be the same scenario that occurred 10 years earlier with "Out of Africa" upsetting "The Color Purple" (no nomination for Spielberg).

You’re spot on about Braveheart. In fact, when Poitier announced it as the Best Picture winner, there was shock from the audience. You could see Meryl Streep surprised as hell lol. Given that the Academy has always had a love affair for epics, Braveheart’s triumph at the Oscars shouldn’t have been a surprise. Perhaps folks underestimated the overall love for the film? And don’t even get me started on Ron Howard being snubbed. Disgraceful. He skillfully handled THREE separate dramas: the spacecraft, mission control, and the Lovell home. They went overboard with their nominations for The Postman.

Braveheart is great IMO.

The Postman has got to be the most obscure and forgotten major Oscar nominee of the last 30 years. I've never heard a single person talk about that movie; I don't even think it's gotten a blu-ray release in America. To think that Heat didn't get nominated for anything and Il Postino got into almost every major category. Of course, you can blame that disgusting monster Harvey Weinstein for that. Thank God he can't ruin any more Oscar seasons with his politicking.

That's OK, plenty of other producers can and still do.
