“Ok, you’re relatively heartless,” Roger tells Gene regarding “E.T.” Funny. Listening to this made me realize and reminded me of just how good James Mason was in “The Verdict.” He deserved to be nominated for his supporting role.

A little surprising to see Siskel pick Jack Nicholson, as he was rather critical of him on first reviewing Prizzi's Honor. Also surprising not to see him pick Out of Africa (for Best Picture) as the worst nomination; usually a negatively-reviewed Best Picture nominee was a shoo-in for that 'category.'

Gene and Roger both missed the boat when it came to their nominations for best song. “Power of Love” not only was a great pop rock song, its lyrics perfectly fit the mood and motivation of lead character Marty McFly in “Back to the Future.” The song “Say You Say Me,” on the other hand, not only is lame it sounds as if it was at least partially lifted from McCartney’s/Beatles’ “Let it Be.”

@flaccidusminimus217010 күн бұрын
Ebert gave it 4 stars, so it was a runner-up. Films admired by cloistered rich people in El Lay are not entitled to appear on critic lists, good as they may be.

I’m assuming this is early 1998 and they’re reviewing 1997 movies for the 98 Oscars? Before his brain tumor diagnosis?
@flaccidusminimus217010 күн бұрын
Correct, he was diagnosed in May, but there's a fair chance he was already experiencing some symptoms. Roger began to notice in early '98 that Gene was slower and occasionally disoriented.

Why spend an episode focusing on what is so bad?
@flaccidusminimus217010 күн бұрын
That's a fair question. I really don't understand why it is worth wasting brain space *ranking* the worst movies. In Siskel's time, they considered this annual special their own a public service announcement, and took pleasure in giving "one last shot" to movies that robbed precious time from their lives.

@AK-qu6rw18 күн бұрын
Umatilla guy expresses his religion over something that is 9000 years old and has relatives all over the world, including Asia and elsewhere. He has no idea what traditions that guy had 9000 years ago. It's like assuming you know what the ancestors of the people who built Stonehenge had 5000 years before their descendants build Stonehenge. You have no Earthly idea what Kennewick man wanted for his remains, or thought about death, or the future. You just have your modern politics, and you would crush science and send us all back to the stone age if you could. I can't respect that. I respect your feelings for Native Americans who lived in the last maybe 500 years, or perhaps 750 years. They might share your beliefs, but 9000 years, forget it, that's the peyote talking.
