The ending of this movie is truly insane. Mann finds a way to express the tragic poetry of criminal professionalism. Our main character’s inner struggles and lifestyle are so distant from our own. The way that Dennis Farina steps out of the bushes in slow motion…there is a certain inevitability to it, like we are seeing the complexity of crime, revenge, and redemption distilled into this one sequence. The score is totally reminiscent of Comfortably Numb…

This movie mesmerized me in 1981, and still does. There was a deleted scene in the original theatrical release I saw that showed "Joe Gags" going out the window to his death in slow-mo, it was cool. I've never seen it since, and to my knowledge Mann has never released the footage.

For those wondering why the thumbnail for this video features the title "Violent Streets", it's because it was the original working title for this film, and was indeed released internationally (outside of the US) under that title until "Thief" became the standard worldwide title with the DVD and Blu-ray releases.

It's an awesome movie but not without it's flaws. The fuck did Leo think was gonna happen when he fucked Frank out of his money and killed Barry? And he's just sitting around at his house, drinking milk and expecting business as usual to go on? And Frank fucked up by getting into bed with the mob in the first place. I could go on...but I still love the movie. And Mann also made Manhunter, which is in my Top 5 Favorite Films of all time.
