At their ages ...especially Lillian Gish, a silent screen actress, over 90 to be in full command of their craft..it is a joy to see ...think about it ..try memorizing 3 pages of a book now ....and keep remembering it...and they both still did it ...it is a great thing to witness ..yes it is a little slow moving film , but it is just that . A real gem

Ann Sothern was nominated as Best Supporting Actress. Should have won. Her daughter played her character as a young woman.

I agree with Roger. Lillian Gish gave the standout performance and Vincent Price gave a very impactful performance within his amount of screen time. I loved both their characters.

I found it to be an excellent film with superb acting and well developed characters. Not to diminish the work of Bette Davis And Vincent Price, but I thought Lillian Gish and Ann Sothern stood out as the very best of this wonderful ensemble.

Gene Siskal was wrong about a number of great films--including this one, which incidentally is one of the favorites of (legendary Japanese filmmaker) Akira Kurosawa. One of the most haunting scenes of cherished love, long lost, is carried off by Bette Davis in the film. I'm referring to Davis handling the lock cut from the hair of her husband, dead for decades, which she has kept carefully in a little box. How Siskal failed to recognize the simple brilliance of Davis's performance almost makes me wonder how he ever rose to such prominence as a critic. I remember how Siskal castigated "Chariots of Fire", which went on to take Best Picture at the Academy Awards and much acclaim internationally. In 1975, Ebert became the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for criticism. In this KZbin video, Roger Ebert tries to help poor Siskal understand the worth of Vincent Price's character, trying to spell it out for Siskal, but to no avail. Siskal didn't have the depth to understand things about, well, life--and Ebert towered over him.

If the movie industry had shrines and basilicas like religions, Gish and Davis should have ones the size of St. Peter's!

How wrong Siskel was! True: Lillian Gish (The First Lady of Hollywood Cinema!) gives a great performance, but so does everyone else - and they're all acting legends. The setting is also fantastic: filmed on location in Maine.

Siskel got it wrong a lot more frequently than did Ebert.

These are some of the last of the last silent film actors - KZbin is the History library that just gets better and better.

Siskel "can't recommend the film." This statement shows that he's reached perfection--he's a perfect ass.

He always was a pompous film critic and so was Ebert (only a little less so).

It was a play on the phrase. The women were the whales, that is larger than life characters, of August, that is late in their life season.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but Siskel's is nonsensical in this case
