OTT was inexcusably dumb. The drama was cornball, that kid was annoying, and the incidental characters end up being more interesting than the main cast.

In the book "Opposable Thumbs", about the history of Siskel & Ebert, the author wrote that when Gene Siskel was hospitalized for his surgery Dustin Hoffman sent him a bouquet of flowers with a note saying "I need you to review Ishtar 2". Gene sent him a thank you note, and joked he should call it "Ishtar 2: The Comedy"😆

The one running thread of this entire episode is already established actors or comedians doing terrible movies for big paychecks. Between 87-95 it was pretty standard. Tarantino and other upcoming directors helped relieve this trend.

I watched Leonard Part 6 recently. It is an outstandingly bad movie. The first time I attempted watching it, I stopped it because I hated it that much but then I actually finished it on another occasion and I couldn't believe how much worse it actually got as it went along.

I just can't even understand it - it's not his style at ALL! It was doomed to failure!! And, spirits, the product placements are so obvious!! I have NO idea what Cosby was thinking at the time. Of course, now, it's even more disgusting since you're wondering whether he gave Victoria Rowell (who played his daughter) drugged pudding pops! Oh, ick! ick! ick!! 🤮🤮

There were so many awful, mindless movies that came out in 1987, I don't know how these guys could narrow their Worst Of list to just these few. They should've gotten an entire hour for this, to warn people not to waste their hard-earned money renting some of the other terrible movies that were released this year. Put it this way: This was the year of the Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Jaws IV and Superman IV. I have to assume these guys refused to even mention that trash on this show.

Burglar is actually a fun film (not a classic, but fun). Great cast - Whoopi, Bobcat, GW Bailey, John Goodman, Leslie Ann Warren etc and some genuinely witty dialogue. I also like The Secret of My Success and Beverly Hills Cop II is a slick action/comedy that still holds up. The rest mentioned here are truly terrible movies.

there is no possible way in any reasonable viewer's mind that _Leonard Part 6_ is a better, more watchable movie than _Ishtar._ there's just no way. and I don't even think Siskel & Ebert thought it was a better movie, either - watch their initial review of _Leonard Part 6_ and you'll find them in rare, indignantly offended form. _Ishtar_ blows, sure, but it's nowhere near being worse than _Leonard Part 6._ there's just no way. watch both if you're feeling brave. see which one you can even get through. it ain't gonna be _Leonard,_ even if you're able to put ASIDE Cosby himself. there's a scene in that movie where Cosby, out of nowhere, asks his daughter to make him a sandwich. she does so as Cosby furiously susses out her boyfriend, who's maybe 30 years older than the daughter. daughter comes back, with a bottle of Coca-Cola, which is clearly visible to the camera. clearly. then, in a subsequent shot, that bottle's logo is inexplicablyn decked with a different logo that just says Coke™. to really jam it home. just in case you didn't get that Coca-Cola™ is a thing that you can consume. Columbia is owned by Coke. Columbia pictures is fueled by coke. (and also Coca-Cola™. heyo.)

I saw Leonard Part 6 a little over a month ago. I couldn't believe how bad that movie actually was. I didn't doubt it was, but it's like it was able to defy my expectations. And the Coca-Cola scene was pathetic. The whole movie was pathetic.

Siskel and Ebert often had said they sometimes would have a coin toss to decide who would would choose a certain film as their choice for the worst. A few years later, Gene would choose Frozen Assets with Shelley Long as the worst, a film that he and Roger both ripped to shreds. Roger choose Shining Through with Melanie Griffith, which they both gave thumbs down to, but in no way that indicated that it would be on the worst of the year list. It happened again with Mad Dog Time with Richard Dreyfuss.

It's really more of a remake than it is a sequel. The whole thing is about Axel going back to Beverly Hills to solve another crime. How original. It doesn't have anything new to say about any of the characters, it uses most of the same set-ups and scenes as the first one, and there's never any doubt that Axel is going to solve the crime and catch the bad guys. Plus you've got stock action movie clichés (oh, look, it's the obstructive bureaucrat and his dim-witted assistant! oh, look, the bad guy throws the cops a red herring and the obstructive bureaucrat falls for it!). A real sequel might've followed up on the events of the first movie (like, what if Victor Maitland had a silent partner who wasn't very happy about losing millions of dollars, blamed Axel and came to Detroit to take him out?), and it might or might not have been good. That being said, you're right it certainly wasn't one of the worst movies of the year, and it's watchable even if it's not great.

Both movies and movie critics have gotten so much dumber since these two died. If Leonard Part 6 was made today - the exact same movie but starring Leslie Jones instead of Bill Cosby - today's movie critics would recommend it and claim anyone who didn't like it was racist. Even when I completely disagreed with Siskel and / or Ebert, they always seemed to be expressing their genuine opinions rather than shilling for a studio so they can keep getting invited to premiere parties or they were afraid of someone calling them bigots. (The bigots thing didn't exist in their lifetimes, though.)
