Oh god, it's my parents in starship form! Growing up, my family was on the upper end of working class or the lower end of middle class. My parents were both sci-fi fans and very pro-technology. This meant that we adopted a lot of technologies very early in their development. For example, we had a 31" color television and VHS VCR in 1978-9. The console TV was covered with vinyl woodgrain, titanic, and came with a bay for placing the VCR in and tape storage. The VHS VCR could record to tape with either two-hour OR four-hour mode. Note: VHS eventually settled on _three_ recording formats, fitting 2, 4 or 6 hours on a standard tape. The problem was that while we could occasionally afford to adopt something earlier than most folks, we couldn't afford to replace it readily when the kinks in the new technology were worked out. Growing up was mostly a matter of dealing with technologies that didn't quite do what they were supposed to, compared to my peers who got everything much later and in better shape.
@Dan19870 Жыл бұрын
With this ships systems being frequently replaced, it's almost certainly travelling from fleet yard to fleet yard within the Federation. During that time, Starfleet should have sent this out full of engineer cadets so they can get hands on experience and see how other Federation worlds tackle engineering issues.
@DaveMastor Жыл бұрын

Rather interesting all the things they put on it to try out, before they were put on ships dedicated to those systems. I'd treat mine mine like a freighter and passenger ship, with a small crew to maintain it and just roam known space since I wouldn't have the shields or weapons to fight the unknown but it'd do me.

@deathstrike Жыл бұрын
It's actually got an Oberth Class vibe to it. Basically a supercharged gunboat that when you need massive firepower in a pinch, it's available. And while I think this is an interesting ship, it's no Defiant by any stretch. Sisko was right, "She was the finest ship I ever served on, there will never be another one like her again". And while I admire and respect Scotty, Geordi, and B'Elanna, and their vast engineering expertise, I have my doubts that they would permit a ship like this with a slower warp capability, powerful but short duration phasers, and more bugs than a bait store, to ever leave a spacedock. If anything ,Sisko would either request another Defiant Class, or at least something that doesn't look like it was made with the Utopia Planetia Lego Set. Perhaps with a better warp drive, reliable phasers and quantum torpedo loadout, and heavier emphasis on armor and perhaps a saucer separation (Seems it would be a cool ship without the lower engineering hull) and you might have what Sisko would deem "worthy" of commanding.

Honestly, it's really hard, at least on the shows/movies, to differentiate the capabilities of ships. They all look more or less and have basically the same weapons - though 'power' of each is really hard to discriminate between. The only reason people love the E and its variations is familiarity.
@3Rayfire Жыл бұрын
Well, there are exceptions to every rule. The Defiant is incredibly distinct with her compact size and phaser cannon fighting style. Discovery and the Spore Drive are unique as basically a teleporting starship. The Protostar and it's protowarp are a visual spectacle. There's also instances of the fact that Starfleet technology has an organic, but linear growth pattern. And you rarely see different generations tested together. For instance one occasion is the Battle of Khitomer where the Enterprise-A got beat up and burned whereas the Excelsior newer stronger, better shields came through the battle generally unscathed with no battle damage.

Torres is really good, recreating an ancient power source that two factions of AI couldn't reproduce, sabotaging a Cardassian strategic missile, twice, keeping Voyager running for seven years. They focused more on how headstrong she was and polishing off her rough edges and her incredible rebelliousness as both a Klingon and a Maquis, but she was an excellent engineer with a keen mind. Nice overview. I like the ship's concept and much of the execution, but ultimately the design doesn't really work for me. The secondary hull seems a bit too long and boxy, and the warp nacelles are mounted a bit too far forward - but I could get past most of that. What really annoys me is the modern trend to introduce weird "voids" into the design - in this case having a big chunk of the saucer section missing right behind the bridge - but then having a weird connector between to auxiliary impulse engines? I'm not saying the saucer always needs to be perfectly round, but if you think about what that would mean practically when trying to traverse from one side to another, it seems like a poor design. Why sacrifice the space to build something LESS efficient? The modern design ethos seems to be governed by "rule of cool" - design something that looks interesting, and then figure out how it works.
@earlware43229 ай бұрын
Yeah, I see what you are saying, "negative space" seems to be all the rage in ship designs lately. I think that this ship could really be better looking if the saucer was solid and the neck connection was a bit smoother. Overall, I do like this look though. While there are aspects of a couple different classes embodied in this design, it handled them in a new and unique way.

Just because the shows and stories star special ships doesn't mean we don't see plenty of standard ships in the fleet. Thanks the Picard we have a good idea of what the early 25th century fleet looks like and it consists of a lot of standardized designs that fill general roles. Even in that show all the hero ships are regular ships, the Titan A/Enterprise G is just a run of the mill medium sized ship, it's most stand out feature is its pretty well endowed in sublight engines. The new Stargazer is again a pretty basic ship just like its namesake. The Ceritos and her ilk are the very definition of regular ships, the Resolute is a common smallish ship with little to distinguish it from any other ship. I could go on.

It hasn't ben going on long. Starting off with a short story in IDW's "Star Trek #400 in which something is killing gods, or higher beings- including the Prophets from DS9 who sends Sisko back with the mission to stop the god-slaughter with very vague instructions. When meeting Picard, Sisko asks specifically for the Theseus, a ship a lot of people aren't supposed to know about. With questions about Sisko's capabilities and loyalities, Picard assigns Commander Data as Ben's first officer and Beverly Crusher as CMO to keep him grounded and honest. #14 came out last week. It already has it's own spin-off: "Star Trek: Defiant", which crossovered with each other in the "Day of Blood" event which...was a thing. 2 hardcover collections are already available: "Godshock" and "The Red Path", along with "Defiant" vol 1 and the "Day of Blood" collection coming out in March. They're good reads, even if falling into the Beta-cannon pitfall of "Everything has to be a reference of call-back to an episode or movie". What I think is fun; IDW Trek is starting to callback to other IDW trek books. DoB had a call back to the recent "The Motion Picture" miniseries, and "Defiant" is circling to a plot from "Star Trek: Year Five"
@dupersuper1938 Жыл бұрын
IDW has had the Star Trek license for a while now. Their two current ongoing series are "Star Trek" and "Star Trek: Defiant". These two titles are closely linked. Star Trek started after the Star Trek #400 special (some one at IDW figured that if you counted up all the DC, Marvel, Gold Key, Wildstorm, Malibu, and IDW Star Trek comics they were coming up on the 400th issue, so they made a special for the occasion: an anthology with a bunch of short stories, the last of which was a prelude to the current series). It's set in 2378 specifically because the writer said they wanted a time when "all the toys were in the toybox", as it were, and that year is after Voyager's return but before Data's death (and even has Jim Kirk still flying around if you go by the Shatner/Reeves-Stevens novels). The main series has characters from TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager, a descendant of one of the characters from Enterprise, and even one of the characters from Lower Decks (being seen a couple years before that series began). Defiant spun-off from that series early on and has a similarly patchwork cast. IDW has also published many other series and mini-series since getting the license, including Picard's Academy, Holo-Ween, a mini directly following TMP, two Strange New Worlds minis, a Discovery mini, a Lower Decks mini, an anthology series, a pretty long running ongoing and a few minis following the Kelvin crew, Leonard McCoy: Frontier Doctor, a Gary 7 mini, a couple DS9 minis, several TOS era photo-comics and more.
