Shakira is 40, she's been famous in Colombia since her teens but she became famous in the rest of Latin America at 22 with her album Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet). Her album ¿Dónde están los Ladrones? (Where are the Thieves?) became the best selling album in Latin America, it was a huge hit. It was also the best sold Spanish album in the US that year (1998). then Ricky Martin's La Vida Loca became a hit in the US and Latino artists became a bit of a fad in the US mainstream media for a moment so I think that helped in making people take a chance on Shakira and support her introduction to English speaking audiences in 2001 with her Laundry Service album, her first single being Whennever Wherever. Lots of Shakira fans were dissapointed at her new image and her dropping the social commentary from her music. She always wrote love songs and fun songs but she also used to write about themes like the hipocrisy of societal rules, abortion, corruption, etc., her Ciega, Sordomuda song (Blind, Deaf-mute) even had a video featuring a police raid on a immigrant neighborhood in a dystopic future. Her crossing over to English meant losing all that but people forget that she was a young woman growing up and becoming aware of the world in the spotlight in the 90's in Colombia, right after political and economical crises (Pablo Escobar died in 1993) and the rest of Latin America was in shambles too, from Mexico to Argentina, after the so called Lost Decade of Latin America (the 80's) so the music she was surrounded back then that spoke about the realities of people influenced her coming of age but the Shakira of the 2000's was a self made woman who freely chose what she prefered to do as an artist. The new millenia brought a different vibe all over and people got really tired of being angry and sad all the time so the new Shakira spoke alot to those who wanted to feel happy again and her always coming back to make Spanish songs helped in making people feel like she was still a Latin American artist first and foremost. Then La Tortura was a huge hit and that just proved her power once again. I think also her Sale el Sol (The Sun Rises) album brought back alot of old fans in 2010. By the way This Time for Africa was a song for the World Cup in South Africa in 2008 but I think it was meant for the whole continent because it was the first time a country in the African continent had been chosen to host the tournament (they usually pick a country from a different continent every time ).

Thank for this reaction ...im from greece but i loved all of her since i was a kid...i know all of her songs ,all the lyrics.. unfortunately people doesnt know some(all)of her songs that speak about life,community,people politics,love..she loves the people..sha has a bright personality and a warm heart..she is musician and a very good performer ...she express her self.She appears on stage barefoot with t-shirts and no makeup...i love her

She was famous in Colombia since 1991 but her break out in Latin America was in 1995. She was very pop rock and her lyrics in Spanish back then were very deep. She plays guitar as well and she was compared a lot to Alaniss Morissette. Now she is very versatile like you ladies noted and although her English hits are a little more sporadic...every song she touches in Spanish becomes a hit. Definitely a legend. You guys did a great job reacting to her. You had very interesting observations about how her hair color changed when she crossed over into English and just to add to that...so did her image. In English she was marketed more sexually than in Spanish, where she had an alternative edge. She broke out in Spanish during a time when rock/alternative music was big in Latin America.
