My pastor John Hannah in Chicago has a mental health clinic in our church for adults and children and it helped my son who was 13 years old when me and his dad got divorce. I think also that churches should have a on site clinic. Thanks Dr. Smallwood for sharing 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

This is why I wrote my book, "Depression Wears Lipstick". Just like Richard, it started as a child, but in our community growing up we are taught not to talk about it. Therapy is a good thing when you find the right one. We shouldn't be afraid or judged in the body of Christ as we deal with mental health. Thank you God for keeping Richard. Thank you God for keeping me!

Stephen so did I, and it was SEVERE. I WENT to bed, and awakened every morning to depression. Then I found out just what it was. I was developing ulcers on top of that. I didn't think that any doctor could help me. They couldn't. I needed the power of God through Jesus Name. There's POWER in that NAME. POWER TO BE FREE FROM HARASSING SPIRIT OF INSANITY. THAT'S WHAT WAS AT THE ROOT CONDITION. THE ROOT. WHEN I CALLED ON JESUS THAT WAS IT. THE BEGINNING OF HELP. COMPLETE TOTAL HELP. NO PILLS PRAISE GOD. PEACE, PEACE, AT LAAAST PEACE.

@@aprilhurd8677 white people in America were not oppressed at the level as African Americas...so it's necessary for us to celebrate our history and overcoming obstacles of oppression and segregation. We couldn't even drink out of the same water fountains as whites, less than 50 years ago. So that's the big difference 😉. You may never understand or relate, but we need a month (at least) to celebrate our history and culture and how we overcame slavery!

@@aprilhurd8677 You have white history all day every day by default because America was designed for White people by default. The rest of us have to get in where we fit in. Black people only got the rights we have if we were willing to sacrifice our lives to fight the system for them and even then many in our community had to make deals with the devil to keep them.

And the TRUTH will set us free. It's sad to think about how many more of the gospel artists are in torment and scarred to tell anyone because of the fear of judgement but y'all the Word says why fear those who only have power to destroy the flesh when we ought to be fearing THE ONE who not only can destroy the body but HE can destroy the soul too!!! This is so liberating to know that a prominent gospel figure is being transparent about a "long-time" issue that has plagued the African American community and church. I thank you Richard for sharing your truth and providing a way to have the "church" look at issues affecting the Christian world. We need "total health" to be able to give "total praise!" Thanks Sister Circle for airing this segment. I just wrote a scholarly paper on treating mental illness in the minority community and this segment helps validates my explanations and support some of the solutions offered.

He's right about churches needing to address mental health issues and assist folks who need deliverance and help. Christ is the healer of all issues: mind, body, and spirit, the total man. There are mentally ill folks in the Bible that Jesus took the time to minister to. He was always moved with compassion, no matter the need; He healed then and still does now. On another note, who is the beautiful co-host on the far left (in Selena's usual seat)? I really enjoyed what she shared, as well as her delivery. She'd make a superb permanent addition to Sister Circle. God bless and keep you, Bro. Smallwood! Thanks for being transparent and honest about your situation.

Wow didn't know his story was so similar to mine..We think people who are performers, especially gospel singers who sing songs that bring us so much joy or help us purge with emotions are imortals or are not human with their own trials and tribulations... His song """ TOTAL PRAISE "" Is a masterpiece ,,,, I had my two neice's sing it at my father's funeral. Thank God he kept his angels around him and brought him back. Because after u make that stand for Christ , depression goes with demons trying to attack you when your spiritual strength is down or you've missed a lot of church....

I am so thankful he is speaking out about his mental health struggles and I wonder how much of this is connected to an internal struggle with self acceptance. The black church has made it very difficult for people to be who they are...all of who we are....we are built to mask our real thoughts about self, sexuality, and spirituality. It's a true dichotomy that's killing many particularly in the black church.

Jesus said, some things only come by *prayer & fasting.* Whenever we pray, we are to pray in the name of Jesus, and believe that we already have it, and it *will* be done.

StrongnBeautiful He also said: “There is safety in the multitude of counsel...”. “In the world you will have trouble...but I have overcome the world.” It takes a LOT for a believer to share their vulnerabilities to the world, to redirect them back to something that they have already done further stigmatizes mental health challenges. It’s good to know that he feels he has found both support & help in therapy and medication supports. I do believe that Christ is The Wonderful Counselor, but He also created & anointed counselors as well.

Yes I agree Strongnbeautiful , fasting and prayer is what is needed to break demonic oppression. The disciples could not cast out the demon because of it. Counseling is good and yes is a great resource, but does not apply for demonic strongholds. We wrestle not against flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness. Only spiritual weapons can defeat spiritual battles.

@@Followerof_YAH i agree. So many times the Drs solution is medication which only masks the symptoms but dont get to the root problem . And alot of times is triggered through "feelings". The medical society says its a disease and sometimes people do have chemical imbalances but alot of times it's triggered by feelings. When you ask what happens when you get depressed they start off well i just "feel " this and feel that.

It’s some things going on now that Jesus or any of the Apostles was not dealing with... you got A.I. stuff going on today synthetic, computers and stuff that is unheard of... never stop praying never stop fasting never stop getting help until you are free...Dan Duval Bride Ministries deal with those issues that run deep that give the enemy a legal right to do things. They have a website and KZbin that’s very helpful, it has help to shed light and help me deal with some deep rooted issues as well. Thank GOD for him speaking out, thank GOD for this interview, Richard Smallwood is one of my favorite gospel ministers.❤️

I'm glad to see church folks starting to be honest about their severe mental illness issues. Long overdue, thanks Richard.

Even God dealt with sin in the garden. Jesus asked the man by the pool of Bethseda " Do you want to be heal?' God dealt with sin head on. He never dismissed or avoided it. We as Christians have been taught to cover up our sins, and what I mean by that is; if i'm going thru something that is a sin issue, then I'm to act as though i'm blessed and highly favored while i'm going thru depression (sin), anxiety (sin), fear (sin), sexuality misconceptions (sin) etc. Let's call it what it is and face it and get the help that is needed. I don't know about anyone else on this page, but I am tired of covering up suffering and pretending everything is BLESSED when it is not. If God knows what I am going thru then why should I hide in shame and condemnation? We as Christians need to rise up scream from the mountaintop and begin to walk towards, walk out and be free from our hidden shame! ..... I'm about to cry.. I feel the tears welling up and I am tired.

MAMMOGRAM...So glad that God allows us to not compete with HIM and HE accepts our humanity and allows our "sins", as you have labeled them, of anxiety, depression, fear, and sexual misconceptions to be presented to HIM. I hope there does exist HIS grace for those who are in dangerous situations (like abused children) to be humane in their fears, anxiety, and depressed moods. You've given quite a blanket statement for common human emotions. Not all of your listing represents "sin". But I really applaud your stamina.
