This TV performance was recorded in 1964 in the UK, and was broadcast on the Granada Television Network. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a Gospel singer and guitarist. She made her first recordings in 1938, the same year that Robert Johnson died. She started out playing acoustic guitars, and then moved up to playing electric guitars. You definitely will need to react to her early-1960s syndicated TV performance of the song, "Up Above My Head". Her guitar solo on that song is incredible. Sister Rosetta Tharp is a posthumous inductee in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as an "Early Influence".

Yes she was the FIRST of something, actually a lot. She was a child star back in the 1920ies i gospel music. She was early on guitar. An inventive player. Early on electric guitar. She was the first who had tour coach. She was first black woman who had white, male background singers. She was the first to hold a stadium concert. Among other inventive things. You need her history, to see other guitar numbers and to hear her sing together with Marie Knight. THAT is dynamite.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was an American singer & guitarist. She attained popularity in the 30's-40's with her gospel recordings & was referred to as "the original soul sister" & "the Godmother of rock & roll". She influenced early rock & roll musicians, including Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley & Jerry Lee Lewis. Tharpe was a pioneer in her guitar technique & used heavy distortion on her electric guitar. Her style of playing influenced British guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck & Keith Richards. Some of her songs are "Rock Me", "That's All", "My Man & I", "The Lonesome Road", "This Train", "Down By The Riverside", "Strange Things Happening Every Day" etc.

Little Richard's first stage performance was at a Sister Rosetta concert. Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley both idolized her when they listened to her in their teens.

She was a gospel singer, but she played electric guitar. She inspired many of the early rock and roll musicians. This is 1964, in England. The promoter set the gig in an old railway station, thinking that it would be a good thematic link. To people in England, trains symbolized America. She started playing electric in the 40s, but she started performing as a child.

I know this video is years old, but I'm glad you did it. There's something unexplainable in this old blues that just doesn't exist anymore.

So you can know how they got such good sound. She had been in show business for 25 years and had plugged into plenty of sub standard sound systems. She had way ahead of her time equipment, PROOF of this if you look, you will notice that she has a transmitter in her pocket, both her mic and guitar are wireless.

This was filmed in the 60’s for Grenada TV. When she was older. Sister was born in 1915. Rock and roll was born, straight out of the sanctified, Holiness churches. From her childhood, Sister traveled with her mother; who was an evangelist with the Church of God in Christ. Sister, was who all these young rockers grew up listening to. Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and later… all the European rockers.

She is the godmother of rock and roll she is the one who invented rock and roll if it wasn't for her rock music even metal music wouldn't even be in existence that's what I love about her yeah rock and roll is black people's music not white not being racist but just telling the truth that's all oh almost forgot when she invented the rock and roll sound it was in the 30s she's been around that long

Looking into who she is: she is called the GODMOTHER of ROCK. Honored by Elvis, Chuck, Little Richard, Keith Richards, Eric Claptin.....This is 1964 she was brought to England to introduce her music to the Brits (Rolling Stones did it maybe....along with Muddy Waters, etc.). Song is old but the recording here is right at the British Invasion timing.
