I love it for kids once they get old enough to make the decision on their own. I am a loc technician and I have started kids in the past because that’s what their Mom/Dad wanted but the child didn’t want it; however, a year ago I decided to never start children’s locs until they are at least 10 years old

I think that the person who is responsible for caring for and grooming the child's hair should make the decision about how the child presents themselves. We make other decisions about hairstyles, clothing and personal grooming without their input. If they get older and are able to care for their hair and decide that they no longer want the locs we can comb them or cut them. For the bun get a fine mesh net from the beauty supply store. It will keep your locs in place and no one can see it unless they are all up on you.

I believe in body autonomy for children, so once they reach an age to express themselves verbally, any hair choice should be their decision. Of course, there are some exceptions. A child's head continues to grow up to age 10, so either smaller locs or waiting until that age is better. Naturally, children like to emulate what their parent(s) do, so loc'd parents generally have kids who want locs. It has always been odd to me that people take issues with locking children's hair, but have no problem with a relaxer being applied without the child's input. My son asked for locs on two previous occasions and took them down before finally allowing his hair to loc on the third try. He's almost 14 now, and I think he changed his mind the previous times due to peer pressure. I don't see a problem with girls and boys of any age getting locs. They can either be cut off or combed out if they change their minds. People are stuck on girls having long hair, but it's ok for girls to wear short hair. Their hair will grow back just like a boy's hair. Finally, I love seeing Black kids embracing their natural hair at young ages instead of believing they have to assimilate to European standards. I'm pro locs for any age.

I saw a little girl a few weeks ago who looked about 8 years old with sister or microlocs! They were so beautiful on her and she had a pretty pink dress on.

I love locs with children. I got my daughter locs done at 6 years old. I asked her she was into sisterlocks from seeing myself and my mother in locs. I don’t see anything wrong with loc at young age as long as it works for the child lifestyle.

I’ve had my microlocs for about 6 yrs. I decided to loc my daughter’a hair about 2 1/2 yrs ago. It’s so much easier for us now. No more weekly or bi monthly braiding sessions. I would spend about 4 hrs on avg braiding her hair. I don’t miss the time spent doing hair.

I think its just hair. As a parent if sister locks are convinient for your childs hair at the time you should do it. They wont know anything else but those. When they get older they can cut or continue. I think its smart if you dont know how to do your childs type hair or dont have time. Its better than tight pony tails putting alot of products in their hair or even resorting to relaxers and extensions

All of my 4 sons have locs. The older three chose to have locs. I chose for my youngest, who was 5, when he got locked. All of them love their locs. For me, locs are a healthy choice that allows children to enjoy their natural hair. I will say if I had locs earlier, I probably would have chosen to lock my daughter's hair when she was younger when she wanted them.

I’ve had my Sisterlocks for almost 3 years. My daughter is 7 y.o. and she’s been asking me for Sisterlocks for about 6 months now. I didn’t want to loc her hair till she turns 13 but since she’s so persistent I’m going to loc her hair in the summer. My oldest son as tradition locs and he asked for them when he was 9 (2 years ago). He loves them. I think it’s good to give our kids a little autonomy. We as parents think we know best but I think we should allow them to make their own decisions for themselves (within reason) providing them with the pros, cons, and the risk in said decision.

My 4 year old daughter made the decision she saw me and her 10 y.o. sister with SL and wanted them so bad she threatened to cut her natural curls off. She has 3b curls. So now all of us microlocs. I installed her micros because she couldn’t sit still. She gets so many compliments so she loves them even more. We all love our hair so much it’s so easier than being a loose natural even with curly hair it’s a lot to deal with 4 heads at once. I have 3 daughters.

I installed my own microlocs, but I don't think I would do so on my son until he was old enough to say if he wanted to or not. I'm conscious of living in a Eurocentric culture where there is prejudice against locs. I don't want my son to encounter that until he's ready for it. In theory, what other people think of his hair is not his problem, it's theirs, but it can still affect him.

I have sisterlocs. My son (11) has traditional locs. He is so handsome and I see a lot of boys his age and older with them. My daughter is 14. She wants sisterlocs next summer. She is a lazy natural. She has beautiful thick natural hair. She hates doing it. I have agreed that she can get sisterlocs next summer.

I’m on the fence about this. I have SL but I’m unsure if I’ll allow my child to do it. She WILL have 2-strand twists though. I want her to learn her hair first before she locs it. Maybe by high school I’ll let her loc it if she wants to.

If it's fine for a parent to give their child a relaxer without consulting their child or giving them a choice, it is definitely fine to start locs on a child. Locs are less damaging to the child's hair/scalp/body than a relaxer. It allows the child to keep their natural hair which is a confidence booster because they are accepting all parts of themselves. Plus depending on the child's texture, locs are what their hair would do naturally anyway. (Detangling for certain hair types is very time consuming and damaging. It's also literally the one thing that's stopping the hair from locking.) Lastly, locs can be taken down. (It's time consuming but it can be done.) That means it's less permanent than a relaxer (which literally requires you to grow a new head of hair in order to get rid of it). To me, it's strange that people feel that children should have a choice about whether they start locs or not, but don't think to give them a choice about relaxers. It's also strange that most people don't consider the psychological affects of adding extensions or relaxing children's hair while the child is still developing their self image. But that's just my 2 cents. 🤷

My 6 year old has had sisterlocks for over a year now. She said she wanted her hair like mine. I asked her if she was sure she asked, “no more combs and brushes right?” I said right! She said yes I’m sure! We locked her hair a few weeks later.

My youngest daughter used to watch videos with me when I became interested in SL's for years before I decided. When I went to my 2 day install back in 2021, my 12 year old daughter decided to get micro locs. She didn't want hers as small as my SL's...I really tried to convince her 😂 To this day, she loves her med/lg micros and has no regrets on the size. I installed hers within the week after I got mine as 2 strand twists. We waited a week before I interlocked her roots & reconstructed some of the parts. Mainly, I wanted to make sure that SHE was sure about wanting the locs. She watched the videos all those years, plus we talked and discussed how semi permanent they are. Soooo....🤷🏾‍♀️ I guess you can say I influenced her decision to get them. She's now 13 years old and we're more than 1 year and a half into our loc journey. My 19 year old started her traditional locs...on her own... before both of us and is now on her 2nd set, redone by me! 😊

Theres a young woman I follow in the UK who had her SL's started at 3 or 4 shes now an adult locked for 22 years. She has nothing but good things to say about her hair journey. Especially with micro sized locks that behave so much like individual strands it can help boost the childs self esteem, decrease hair loss ( the amount of young girls and teens I have seen with traction alopecia from wigs and braids is heartbreaking). It can also decrease bullying and help with gendered competition as Black girls can retain length easier... similar to their non-Black counterparts. It can be quite difficult to come of age with loose kinky short hair in Western countries. Also it can give young girls more autonomy over their body and hair as they can learn at earlier ages how to wash and style it since locs are more manageable than loose tightly coiled hair. I wish I had known about microlocs in elementary or middle school would have saved alot of money and stress.

I have had my SL/knotted locs for almost 5 years this September. The switch to knotted locs was my greatest decision, since getting SL. I only have to retight 4 times a year or less. I installed brother locks in my son's hair 3 years ago, they're thriving, growing twice the speed of my locks. Locs are a blessing. ✌🏾

I have 2 small girls (5 and 4 months) and I won’t put locs in their hair and I have had my sisterlocks for a little over 1.5 years. I just feel like getting mines was a decision I made for myself and I won’t take that right away from them. To me your hair is too much a means of expressing your individuality and I feel like they should be able to do as they please. It’s too important for me to raise young women who have a voice and I won’t extinguish theirs by making a choice for them.

I let my daughter loc her hair when she was 9. My sister and niece convinced her first. I wasn’t on board at first. My sister started them as two strand twist so it was a trial period. She liked the low maintenance and I fell in love with that too. 3 years later she is still locked in! I joined the loc journey one year after she did. 😅 I was a lazy natural as they call it. This is so much easier. I always had braids anyway. Natural way to go for me.

Mother-daughter duo here 🙋🏾‍♀️😄 We are both approaching our 4th year with microlocs. We have 2 FAQ videos and a bunch of others on our channel, so feel free to snip any that you want 😀 I have done 2 videos on the topic, but here's the story in a nutshell - my daughter had FULL, coarse strands real 4c hair as a baby 😆 I learned about Sisterlocks shortly after I gave birth to her, but was going to wait until she was 9 to see if she wanted them. At the end of the day, it was a toss up between shaving her bald so we could both rest, or locking it up. I decided to lock it up because a relaxer wasn't an option for a child. 2 years in, I combined her locs to the current number. My microlocs are still noticeably bigger than hers though, even after combining. I think people make judgements simply because they've never walked in the other person's shoes. I understand that, and it doesn't make me feel bad because I still don't have any regrets about my decision.

I have Sisterlocks. My daughter has struggled with getting her hair done every week. She didn't like the process of washing, detangling, etc. She would tolerate getting her hair braided, but depending on who braided her hair and if they were heavy handed, she would sometimes cry. A couple times we added a little hair to it for length and her scalp broke out. Also, her hair broke off completely twice a year. So, we were always in the regrowing phase. She asked me when she was 5 if she could get Sisterlocks. I thought about it for a year and we talked through what that would mean. It being a permanent hairstyle. She understood. So, when we went to visit my sister in Kenya for Christmas, she got them installed. For a lot cheaper of course. I've been letting my loctician maintain them for the last 5 months, but she recently taught me how to do them. I completed my first retightening on her last weekend! It took forever, but the money I will save will be a game changer. My daughter loves them! And is already talking about "length goals!" We now get stopped wherever we go asking what style we have and how they love it and how they can get them. It's summer time and like all children, she wants to swim everyday. So, her hair is braided and banded 24/7! She is 7 and has had her locs for 5 months now. I check in periodically and she confirms that this was the best decision for her. And that makes me smile! As long as she is happy! I'll send you some pics via Instagram. :)
