Maybe because my childhood was in Holland but I hear a very safe Hilversum-sauce interpretation (Anita Meyer, Dolly Dots, Paul de Leeuw) with girls singing their well-studied vocal lessons and almost no emotion and no connection to the lyrics. I normally would expect to hear sadness, bitterness, hesitation, maybe some dispair and indifference. Listen carefully to the version of Level 42 and their voices especially Mark King. It makes me wonder who chose to study and perform this song. I also hear some Dutch accent but that is normally appreciated outside Holland. Maybe I am totally wrong. Technically I think it is very well performed and I think with more emotion and attachment to the song intention and lyrics you can grow. Or maybe just ditch this song a choose a song you feel really connected to. Personnaly I think this song is more appropriate for a male voice, but don't hesitate to prove me wrong.
