Man’s search for meaning is the single greatest book on psychology/philosophy/self-help that I have read. I think the main thing that sets it apart is that the author witnessed the worst depravity and malevolence the modern world has seen and STILL walked away believing that life is worth the struggle. There is very little in the way of high-minded theory or hand-wavy suggestions, instead the book is structured as a call and response; first he recounts his story and its horrors, then he outlines his worldview and philosophy that serves as an adequate response to that horror. I think this reveals (at least to me) how life is a constant dialogue; we negotiate with and navigate life, it calls out to us, and we respond in our actions and words. There is no “ultimate” meaning (at least not one that is relevant to our lives as humans) rather, each moment is overflowing with meaning and it is up to us to either engage with or ignore what reality speaks to us. Meaning in life naturally arises from authentically engaging with the meaning that calls out to us, and desperation and depression result from refusing the call.

you'd be surprised to hear that the meaning of life is as limited as the meaning of our existence. And paradoxically, the limit of our existence is both defined by our conscious and changing self-aware selves but also our hard-coded physical/environmental/biological circumstances since birth. How vague what I just said is, but now that i've reduced our meaning it's time to build it back up. Our meaning is already apparent, it's in our art, our culture, the way we live, the things we yearn for, and the things we fight for. To look under or around or behind the earth to find our meaning is insane, to look to the stars is pointless; our meaning is right here, and it is the most significant thing in the universe despite the sense of wonder you get from looking into space.
