Drongo, fan from Korea here. As a developer myself, I must tell you that making a solid replay system is REALLY, REALLY challenging. I also believe that AoE4 dev is very short-staffed. Based on the patch notes, I can only believe that there aren't that many people working on the game. They are probably in a state where they can tweak, or mix already-existing content to create a new one. Also it is not always up to the devs what to develop. Usually, the design team bring in those items to the devs and they compromise. I'm sure the devs want to update many of the things that you have mentioned, but even the smallest UX/UI change require a lot of people working in together in a big software like this. I cannot say that the current balance, mechanics, QoL features are great. But they are fine to the point where most of them are enjoyable. I also must say that the match making is not only the dev's fault. THERE JUST ISN'T ENOUGH PLAYERS PERIOD. Why are you being matched with Divine despite being conqueror 1? Because there are not other conqueror 1's to play against you. Remember that player count in AoE4 world is the entire world. Depending on where you live, there may be or may not be an opponent to play against. I once played a single person five times in a row. I even ranked up to conqueror and I still got matched with the same Diamond3->2 opponent. The best we can do is, I don't know; Wait... there is just no other way we can help the devs nor the game. RTS is a niche genre and no one is willing to dedicate their free time to play a super stressful genre where all the pressure of losing is pointed towards you and you only. Maybe if Storm Gate is successful, it will bring in a new batch of enthusiasts and perhaps increase AoE4's player base also. In any case, I really enjoy your videos. As a English player, I share you affinity towards the English and (at times) the bit favored casting :) Cheers.

The thing is, it's not about starting from scratch to build a replay system. It's more about grabbing the existing values from the replay and showing them on the screen. The problem isn't just technical, especially when it happens in a company that hires the best programmers in the world. The real issue lies in poor management and lack of collaboration between teams at Microsoft. It's not like they're trying and failing; most of the time, they don't even bother trying anything at all.

@ow7586 Relic isn't even owned by Microsoft. AoE is Microsoft's but it's only an Microsoft-owned IP that historically has been contracted to a bunch of different teams. 2DE was handled by Forgotten Empires/Keywords Studio/World's Edge and Relic (none of which are owned by Microsoft) and AoE4 was just Relic I think.

I'm so tired of everyone hating on age for no reason. They just dropped a massive expansion with Sultan's. Anyone who was expecting some big news on aoe4 was delusional. The livestream wasn't for presenting content, it was a peace of mind stream to let the community know that even tho we just gave you a bunch of content were not done. The recap of 2023 shows this. IMO AOM Retold was the winner of the livestream simple because that game is looking great. Hopefully we get gamplay of AOM soon. Yes all the info in the livestream could of easily been presented in a blog post. The fact that they took the time, energy, and resources to make it into a livestream shows they care about the community and keeping it going.

The expansion was a half of year ago, The developers are just that developers they are in the business for 2 things to make money and keep their jobs, they don't do anything for the community, if they did they would balance things properly or make a free DLC for players etc.

So we can not criticize the Marketing strategy where a DLC of AoE2 without civs had almost 1 hour of streaming and between AoE3-4 had little more than 2 minutes? We can't criticize that, after the best selling DLC in the history of the franchise, they don't make some kind of Roadmap, say they are working on a DLC for the future, say it is included in the Red Bull Wololo or anticipate some news of the season patch? This conformism so detrimental to the game. Nor comment on the way of presenting AoM without showing the images until the end of the AoE2 Gameplay by someone who had no knowledge of the franchise and was only known in Rust and little else. Good things are said, but criticism is very necessary if they want to move forward.

That is not the problem, the problem is that they keep realising amazing stuff to AOE 2 and AOE 3 , and sleep in AOE 4, they prefer to focus on old games for no reason, imagine a timeline of releases every 3 months or so like, 1 new civ, 1 new mode, 1 new campaign, stuff like that for AOE 4, keeping the game alive and healthy, but no keep realising amazing campaign to a old game

Unpopular opinion: I DONT want a road map, I DONT want new civs. I am okay with new maps, but i dont need them. What I want, is to play age of empires 4 some 10 games per week at a fairly high level, and doing that I want to get BETTER, not WORSE, compared to all the people who just spend way more time with that game and get used to all the freaking new things every few months, with which i just cant keep up. :(

I've started playing AoE4 a week ago after i've seen a video about rts. This is the first rts that i really invested myself into. I've played very little of starcraft a few years ago but never got hooked. I'm really having a blast with this game and it seems complex enough (basing on videos i've seen) that high level players can spend years optimizing things. I don't know yet why everyone seems to hate this game or see it as inferior to AoE2 (idk enough about AoE2 to say if it is or not), but as a new player to AoE and rts i think the game is pretty good till now. In saying that everyone don't like this game i include the publisher that don't seem to care about making the game better and adding more stuff.

The only thing that i feel will make it weird for me is the fact that all basic units are the (visually). They're all centro-european style units even if i'm play someone like the chinese. This is a minor and it's not going to impede me from playing and enjoing the game. But after you've said all that, AoE2 seems like a more polished and complete game.

Aoe has the unique problem of being a series where multiple games are being updated and developed simultaneously so theyve gotta be wary of releases not stepping on eachothers toes. As the newer releases i think aom retold and aoe4 are going to cycle back and forth in updates depending on aoms success. Aoe 2 is an island unto itself and aoe3 im pleasantly surprised theyve kept updating it. Aoe4 getting 2 new civs and 4 variants early 2025 id be perfectly happy with. Absolutely a road map would go a long way to keeping the playerbase happy. From the outside it feels like development of aoe in general is pretty lean and seems to do well enough, hopefully that protects it from the cuts and layoffs the industry is seeing.

I agree with every points you made, except one. I like to re-watch games and i've encountered all of those bugs and issues too. The rewind thing should have been a MUST from the start. Not seeing Rus bounty annoys me because i'm curious how they're doing when you're casting a Rus player. The game does feel like it's on life support despite the huge success of the expansion. Ottoman being pushed to S+++ tier after a single patch and being left there until next patch is insane to me. They make 4v4 annoying to play. I'm still waiting for the devs to rework the tower siege into a staircase up to the wall, like they said more than a year ago. That being said, i disagree when you said that there shouldn't be any dodging possible in lobby. Conquerors waiting 10 minutes to play a game is just a consequence of both being the top 1% of players and having a small playerbase. Even League of legends, with a huge playerbase, has its top 1% of players waiting a long time for a game. It's just is like that for top players. If you think it's annoying to wait 10 minutes to play a game as a Conqueror, think of the enemy team who's not conqueror and waited just a few minutes to get matched against conquerors. They're waiting 15 minutes for a defeat. The matchmaking is awful as you pointed out so people should be allowed to dodge a game once in a while. Even for reasons that aren't rank related. If you're matched with a player you didn't like playing with, you should be allowed to dodge.

Honestly, if an update video like this has me wanting to say or address _so_ much in the comments aftwards, then that's proof of a really good video honestly. I wouldn't mind more of these in the future! Or some recorded games (live or post). You're very engaging and honest, and I think a lot of new or interested players like myself would learn a lot from it. Even current players too. Regarding coding, as someone who has a very basic knowledge of coding, uhhh yeah it isn't that simple at all. Like in theory, the functions are, but the actual mechanism to accomplish them takes _a lot_ of time, effort, and knowledge to do. I'd for sure would craft something if I had the skills, but alas I don't (yet). Well at this point everyone should know that the devs or publishers dont give a damn about this game , they do the bare minimum. I also added my list in the forums but they dont care. it took them 1 year to describe correctly the passive for each civ, translation is still not correct for most languages,Japanese archer dont have an animation , and so on.... They clearly dont care and I tell you that , if it wouldnt be for the big casters and ofc Drongo , this game would not have 10 k players now, maybe 2 k .

I don't think a neutral caster mode is possible. The replays you watch come directly from the memory of the game from either player, you're not watching a recording or anything so the alerts and other stuff that pop up are to put it how you said it 1's and 0's that are lodged between the other 1's and 0's in the memory. Removing those could probably break the entire replay and cause a lot more problems. So it just doesn't seem a worthwhile feature to attempt.

Bring in scenario editor and it will save the game, I will genuinely play 1000s more hours and record it. I made a whole campaign in the OG aoe but it is lost to time. I am such a geek I would do something like that again, just for fun.

Long-time fan of the AoE/AoM series-- owned pretty much every single installment on CD. The unfortunate development struggles in the series has been present (in my experience) ever since Ensemble Studios disbanded in 2009 and sold the rights to AoM. Even with slow development/updates for AoE, you continue to keep the game alive with your commentating. You are one of the best commentators for the AoE series, if not the best currently. I wish good health for you and your family, and thank you for contributing such good content for the game. I hope to see you commentate gameplay when Age of Mythology: Retold drops. With all that said, you are absolutely out of your mind to believe that "The Tonight Dough" is the best B&J's flavor. It is obviously Half-Baked.

"Ensemble Studios disbanded in 2009 and sold the rights to AoM" - erm, what? ES was at the time owend by Microsoft, they acquired the studio in 2001, inbetween The Conquerors Expansion and AoM. The IP to Age of Empires and Age of Mythology has always been owned by Microsoft. In 2008, they closed the studio because it was costing them a ton of money, but not making enough. They worked on 8 started and cancled projects, including the infamous Halo MMO. And at the time, RTS was already heavily in decline, support a studio of that size was not feasible. To this day, RTS is far from its former glory. Relic, being an almost RTS-only studio, dismissed half of their staff last year, after Company of Heroes 3 failed hard. And I also don't think AoE4 sold nearly as well as they hoped, which resulted in less funding from MS and in turn in slower patches, updates and DLC.

I disagree with: 1. the AoM could just be a limited steam announcement. AoM was what the audience really wanted most from the onset. Everyone was posting prostagm as the stream began. 2. The AoE2 people also knew because of the changes in the RBW discord. If you kept watc on it, you would know. The aoe2 people reposted the logos from there. 3. AoE4 had the biggest recent DLC in all of AoE a few months ago. Don't be too salty that you didn't get the biggest announcement now.

I'm not expecting another expansion this November as too close to when I imagine AoM retold to release, think best we can hope for is for early next year and then maybe from that point forward we will get new expansions at a faster pace. As you said it takes time for things to work up the chain. One thing I am certain of is it is a question of when and not if we will get a new expansion though which I am happy about. Interested to see where you can take caster mode and I wish you all the luck with it!

Hi drongo! First of all, I love your casts they are always super entertaining and give me good insight for improving my own game. It is a shame that the devs seem to ignore caster mode because it seems like a very important way to attract new players to the game. It is important both for tournaments as well as youtubers like you, and yet they do seem to have ignored it a bit lately with no plans to change that in the future... That being said, I do think it is important mention that the game is actually a very good spot right now (at least that is what I think). The civs are relatively balanced (ofc. always room for improvement), we got a ton of new content. I am genuinely enjoying myself a lot with this game. Hearing that the devs are now also including FFA quick matches, means that they do listen to the fans and keep on expanding and working on the game. So I do not think the game in general is on life support (just the caster mode unfortunately...). I also feel like there are some things you mentioned that are more complicated than you make it look. The long waiting times for example. I think this is mainly the lack of high ranked players available. You could do faster matchmaking but then you will be matched with players that are a lot stronger/weaker than you are, which is also not fun. I don't think there is a easy solution here. I'm not saying this to criticize, just to open a healthy discussion :) I wish I could help with the caster mode but I know nothing about coding... respectfully drongo, a lot of your points I agree with, but the whole dodging thing... how can u complain about being a 1400 point conq 1 being matched against a 2000 point conq three and then whinge about it? Believe me, at the casual level it is even worse. I am a perennial gold level, and I get stuck against upper diamond and even conq players.. why the hell shouldn't I at least dodge one time? I wouldn't dodge again because of the cool penalty but the one time warning makes sense. Rarely do I get hit with a matchup that bad twice in a row, so a one time dodge grace is understandable at a the lower levels. All that said... I CANT WAIT FOR THIS WORK TRIP TO BE OVER SO I CAN PLAY AGAIN LOL its going to be 8 days between games for me

Aoe4 is an almost direct upgrade from 2 for me. It'svery fun to play, I like the age up mechanic way more, units and buildings look nicer. Civ design is a lot more fun as well, unique mechanics, diffrences that go a little deeper. We're not Terran v Protoss, but that's alright, we're inbetween humanSlavSkin v humanEnglishSkin and terran v protoss and that's a perfectly good identity to have. Except it has no campaigns. I do not play multiplayer, I play scenario's and campaigns because they're so much fun. Does Aoe4 have a map editor? For some reason I don't know, which means it didn't interest me enough to look. I used to spend hundreds of hours in aoe's (1) and Aoe2's map editors and I don't even know if 4 has one. So yeah it's dissapointing that they put all their effort into the multiplayer, and apparently even that's not that much.

I have no issue with this game, i absolutely love it tbh, looks great, plays great and runs great. But we defi at least need a roadmap or something but the dlc is gonna keep me busy for a long while tbh absolutely love it

I disagree with your comment about dodging to an extent. If they made fairer matchups dodging would be less of an issue. I kind of suck at the game (the best I've ever gotten in ranked is gold 1) but if I'm matched up against a Conqueror 1 (this has happened before) I'm going to quit. It's going to be a really fun game for the other player but it's going to suck for me because I'm going to lose badly. Why waste my time?

i came from a totally different genre and game (cs) which is way bigger, has a lot more people playing and a giant esports scene and what i can't understand are the expectations this community seems to have. AOE4 is in a fine place for what its supposed to be. RTS are just super niche and especially in terms of esports difficult to follow since so much specific knowledge is required to comprehend what is going on in any meaningful way. Im actually amazed AOE4 is doing as well as it is and that i can find ranked games in my region at 5 in the morning. Also grateful that theres some sort of esports scene keeping the RTS genre alive since Starcraft isn't doing all to well with the diminishing of GSL either.

As I developer myself (although not game developer) AoE4 is very poorly written from the code perspective. I have a strong feeling that every description, unit, feature they write it completely from scratch without reusing the code that already exists which would be considered a bad practice. This causes some inconsistencies like one unit having armor bonus while other has damage reduction which isn’t really scalable in the long term. Descriptions and icons sometimes don’t match which probably means they come from two different sources - probably taking twice the space needed on our machines? If I were to guess there is heavy under-staffing and very high rotation of devs/designers/people in charge. The worst part is the longer this goes the more expensive it will become. I have my fingers crossed for the near future that we won’t be seeing a lot of changes but a lot of the code will be refactored, replaced or repaired.

Coming from FF14, playing it for 10 years: I think slow and steady patches and expansions is preferable for longevity, actually. Too many crazy new features can be a downfall. Also the devs in FF14 keep saying: "play other games, come back when there is new content". I think that is a more healthy stance, instead of expecting constant content. If the game is good enough, everyone will come back anyway. Ofcourse RTS work a little different but I think it still holds up.

That is not the problem, the problem is that they keep realising amazing stuff to AOE 2 and AOE 3 , and sleep in AOE 4, they prefer to focus on old games for no reason, imagine a timeline of releases every 3 months or so like, 1 new civ, 1 new mode, 1 new campaign, stuff like that for AOE 4, keeping the game alive and healthy, but no keep realising amazing campaign to a old game

How about a community financed and organized AoE4 Major lead promoted by Biggest content creators together with EGCTV? Maybe you would also get Microsoft money as well as other sponsors. Rent an Air BnB or Gaming House in EU, US, Asia or Australia. Probably only 8 players then. Aren't Malta and Serbia known as affordable gaming hubs? I think Malta even sponsors Events in Cs Go.

Hi Drongo, totally agree with you and thank you for making the community better by creating amazing casts. I feel your pain, but maybe the developers have these tasks at the bottom of the priority list. Because how often are there tournaments, and how often do players care about these things. With the massive tech layoffs, companies are trying to maximize profit and fixing caster mode isn't going to improve the player experience. Don't get me wrong, I totally would want to see the 80 bunti, but thats just the reality of priorities. Sad but keep up the good work and thank you for being vocal about these issues so the greater community knows !!!

I agree with all the points you raised. The development of the caster UI especially is completely unacceptable. However, I have never seen the delay in searching for another game like that. I normally have maybe 1 or 2 seconds maximum before I can search again. Is that a common problem? First I'm hearing of it.

Two things from the UI that I wish they'd change in caster mode is 1) why they can't show villagers and income per minute annoys me so much. The villager count should be above the resource and the income per minute should be below. 2) I hate how in caster mode they change the resources and population count depending on the side. It should just be Food, Wood, Gold, Stone, Extra resource like olive oil, then house count.
