What is more heartbreaking is that Aethelwold took Ragnar's sword out of instinct thinking Ragnar wanted to defend himself when Ragnar simply wanted Valhalla. To die with weapon in hand.

In fact he’s shown fighting in the thick of the battle killing Danes. So if he’s a coward what would some pleb like you who’s never even touched a sword be? Don’t forget Ragnar would have died in that battle if Uhtred didn’t save him in the first place.

Or maybe it's in honor of Harry McEntire being a better actor than his character deserves, so he gets to be something more sinister than the piece of sniveling weasel shit he is in the books. And also, it gives Ragnar a slightly more hardcore death than just dying ("offscreen", as it were) fat and drunk in Dunholm. He deserved something more than his death being basically a sidenote in the books. "Oh, and Ragnar died." The change from the books that bothers me is how they practically erased Haesten from the story. I mean, I know he exists in the show, but that's about all he does. Exists. He should have been a thorn in Uhtred's side from about the beginning of Season 2.

StormWolf Ragnar’s death pissed me off, but a certain storyline that came after it was the worst thing about it. They should’ve just let him die with his sword in his hands. I just don’t know why they would stray from the source material so heavily especially when the show was great in those first two seasons. Now I’m not saying season 3 isn’t great because for the most part it is, but the changes made will affect parts of season 4 too.

But presumably it's Bernard Cornwell who wrote Ragnar out like that in the books this is adapted from - unless the show departed from the books in this instance? Everyone seems to forget this is an adaptation just like GoT - it's not an original show 'written for TV' like Vikings. This is the one thing I don't get about this channel either. I don't think Sith has ever once mentioned this point about the books.

Tbh I did believe that Aethelwold would kill Ragnar in his sleep when he said it - he has motive to do it and we've already seen that he shouldn't be underestimated. Also the show had signalled the end of Ragnar's character when Cnut explained that Ragnar had served his purpose in life by avenging his father's death. Cnut was probably just totally making up that Ragnar was planning to kill Aethelwold though.

DUCK SAUCE I don’t really hate his character, he’s my second favourite after Alfred. It’s just the turn to being this big bad felt way too sudden. As in the first two seasons, he schemes and is a little shit but also comedy relief. If he really wanted the crown, he should’ve killed Alfred in season 1.

@@omar_elattar.6500 Well one reason is his schemes are more useful to Uhtred in the earlier seasons and he shows courage in battle in season 1. Him and Odda are the most vocal to let Uhtred come to the meeting when aethelfled is captured. He also points out only Uhtred can clean up the mess Aethelred caused and it’s dumb they want to push Uhtred out. In the 3rd season though his schemes started working against Uhtreds welfare in general. Plus Uhtred cares a lot about Aethelfled since he’s known her since she was a kid. But in reality Aethelwold isn’t lying when he says he has as much a right to the throne as Uhtred has to Bebbanburg. Uhtred was only a little kid he had no ability to lead Bebbanburg so was his uncle wrong to usurp him? According to why Aethelwold was usurped it makes perfect sense for Uhtreds uncle to usurp him. But in Uhtreds uncle case he’s the bad guy for doing the most logical thing. Only difference is Uhtreds uncle was willing to kill Uhtred. Which Uhtred told Alfred to do to Aethelwold. It’s a slippery slope to hypocrisy. Meanwhile you got all this sympathy for Ragnar aka “if I see you across the battlefield I will kill you”. Even though the last time that happened in season 1 Uhtred had just saved Ragnar from being killed. Because everyone forgets Ragnar was about to die in season 1 in the same battle Leofric dies in but we see Aethelwold kill at least two Danes on his own and no one came and saved him. But you know....we’ll pretend Ragnar was always this valiant warrior who never needed to be saved.

seasons 3 and 4 did some damage to this series since all the most charismatic talented actors SPOILER ALERT just kept dying off ... six whole major characters ! yikes ! this is a great series which i am absolutely crazy about but ensemble acting is a big part of appeal... i am still faithful and will watch it to the end but i am so sad that season 5 is supposed to be the last.. and the loss of all these major people is a major contributor

Remember in season 2 Uthred wanted to kill one of the brothers Sigfried in his sleep, nobody judged him for that but everyone calls Aethelwold a weasel and coward for it.. i agree that he is a weasel but not for this specific reason. Ragnar was a threat to him and he handled it the only way he could. Also i have to disagree with killing someone in their sleep is more cowardly than poison, Even tho its cowardly killing someone in their sleep you have to physically be there and risk getting caught/the victim waking up. With poison you dont have to physically be there and you dont have to personally push a sword/knife into flesh

I really enjoyed the start of the season but the ending of this episode pissed me off so much, I fucking hated it. As in Aethelwold has always been a slimy shit but to have the balls to kill Ragnar is a completely different scenario which I never would expect from him. It just felt way too much even for his character. And then to not let Ragnar die with his sword was even more bullshit. As in yes it was done for shock value but this deviates so far from the books, especially with what comes next with that storyline. It’s just so annoying that Ragnar went out like this and it’s the first thing which I really really disliked about the season. Alfred being held hostage was a big change from the books but this one just got me. The worst thing about it is probably the fact that Ragnar and Uhtred left on bad terms which again, never happened in the books. Their anger towards one another is understandable and the show established that, but Ragnar always saw Uhtred as a brother even after their altercation. My little rant over, I love Finan. Him and Sihtric are just such great side characters to Uhtred. The way he head butted that guy in during the fight with Uhtred and Bloodhair was hilarious lol. Fuck Skade. Nothing else to say about her character. That little fight we got with Uhtred against Haesten was fun. Despite the rant, I still really like this season. The pacing is great even though sometimes it’s rushed a bit too much. You can clearly tell the production value and budget increase. I think that’s obviously because Netflix took over but the only bad thing about that is they stray so far away from the books that even season 4 will be affected by it. Either way, great reaction. I can’t wait for the rest!
