The stuff about automorph and toon shading was really interesting. You could tell how much better Studio Orange understands how to make 3D look "anime" than most other studios. The boys kept trying to get him to "spill the secret" but I don't think there is any, the only difference I could glean from this interview is that the artists at Studio Orange just understands the software and what it's capable of way better than anyone else in the industry. Everybody else is playing catch-up.

As a graphic designer, I love the part when he mentioned that when you design something it's because of a purpose. It's hard for some people to understand that, when you work on a big project it's not about "I would like to do this" it's about "this NEEDS to be done". For example, you don't go to the doctor for a suggestion, the doctor will tell you what's wrong with your body and he knows what your body NEEDS to deal with the issue. That's why research, schedules and preparation in Pre-Production it's important, you're dealing with other people's time, money and maybe even health, you need to do your role, assume the responsibility and be as honest and clear as you can be, because if you and the other person are not in the same page, 99% of the time it results on the project burning to the ground, so be responsible and make sure to be clear from the start.

This really seems to be the point that ppl dont get right? Its why people still discuss if graphic design is a branch of art or not; personally, i dont think so since art can be interpreted and designs have an objective.
@SpiderJAAM

@@dumbluckduckgoose9437 They actually tell you the definition in class. The difference between artist and designer is that an artist uses his art knowledge and skills to create something to express himself, & a designer uses art knowledge and skills to create something for someone else. And don't get it wrong, you can be a designer AND an artist if you want, but as a professional you need to now the difference of "something I want" and "something that's needed". Specially when your reputation and other people's time and money are on the line, you can't waste time on personal preferences that aren't needed for the final product.

Trigun Stampede has been a very enjoyable experience all around, starting from the show itself - character design, world building, soundtrack etc., you can tell just how much love and effort was put into tristamp - and ending with interacting (albeit in a passive way) with the crew and getting interesting insights. Yoshihiro Watanabe himself interacts with fan content regularly which is also very nice and endearing in a way and motivates fans to participate in online spaces dedicated to the show. Hell, I even came back on Twitter and Tumblr solely to post fan content dedicated to Trigun Stampede. This interview was also full of great insights about the industry and I'm super happy to know that the works they create are products of passion! Very much looking forward to more of Trigun Stampede, and I hope it receives continuous support enough to fund at least 5 seasons of this masterpiece. Recently I've seen more and more people get into the show even despite their reservations at first, and they really do not regret it. The season finale was phenomenal.

Man I was so disappointed in the new trigun. I don’t understand why you’d wanna go anime original/reimagining twice ina row instead of giving the manga the faithful adaptation it deserves. I’m not sure how you could think the character designs were anywhere near the levels of the source material. They also rushed the so called world building by speed running vash and knives origins. Nothing had time to breathe during this prequel/reimagining
@MeowMeow-ni4jm

@@sharebear421 quick question have you read the manga and are you familiar with its pacing, because if not then I feel like you're using a point of reference that is completely irrelevant to Trigun Stampede

@sharebear421 Жыл бұрын
@@MeowMeow-ni4jm yes I own all the volumes. I’ve been a trigun fan since the early 00s. While it does take some parts of the manga it’s largely a reimagining and they’ve already stated they won’t be adapting the manga for the most part. I guess it just doesn’t make sense to me why they’d go that route when the 98 anime was already mostly anime original
@MeowMeow-ni4jm
@MeowMeow-ni4jm Жыл бұрын
@@sharebear421 I do understand your frustration, but now that it's clear that Nightow "greenlit" major conceptual changes I feel like it'd make sense to give the continuation of the story some benefit of the doubt, as it seems that it would address things that the author himself deemed necessary to pay more careful attention to even compared to manga. More plant lore, sci-fi elements etc. Art medium itself sure called for some design changes, and the intentional de-aging of the main cast is also a great chance to be introduced to a new side of their character development. Might not be a word for word retelling of trigun+trimax, but the spirit is there and the further we go into the story in Trigun Stampede, the closer the characters get to who you personally might be more familiar with, design and personality-wise - e.g. a hint at Wolfwood's design changing (the color of his shirt signalling immaturity and inner conflict), Vash's design change in EP12... I personally was positive about Trigun Stampede from the start because "Yay, more Trigun!", but I understand that you'd want it to be closer to the source material because you developed a stronger attachment to the manga. Maybe you can try the "Yay, more Trigun" approach too, taking into consideration the fact that the audience has changed a lot and their tastes in the visual design too. I don't know, it's kind of thrilling to see younger people discover the world you love, but on their own terms :)

To answer Connors question about if models cost a lot to produce, why do other studios who do 2d also make and use 3d models occasionally for shots it is also to save money, at least from my own experience. Orange produces mostly in 3d and so their models are constantly in focus and need to be able to do a lot more. More expressions, more controls, likely cleaner geometry. Producing models of this quality and per character can get steep. On the opposing side 2D animes usage of it usually has the purpose of cutting back on animation time. Since the model may not be used as often it wouldn't need to have a huge suite of controls and be particularly high quality as it's purpose is mainly just to cut back on having to hand animate and makes it easier to do quick scenes or more dynamic ones. Alternatively in the case of like AoT or Mecha anime, if you spend a good amount of money upfront making a decent model, that ends up paying for itself down the road as that can asset can be used again and again. (Even easier for stuff like Mecha and titans because they don't really need a whole lot on expressions or even any at all) Unfortunately animation is an industry that is generally always gonna get pretty costly, but it is fascinating what tricks can be employed to ultimately save money while hopefully not compromising on vision to much.

Just finished the whole video. I'm so glad to see Mr. Watanabe here and I've been hanging on his every word the whole time. Firstly, TRIGUN STAMPEDE IS AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE!!! My mind hasn't been blown in such long time and definitely not like as much as when I was watching TriStamp. I was looking forward to every new episode every week. Oh how I wish Stampede Saturdays would return. I'M DEFINITELY HYPED FOR THE CONTINUATION!!! Secondly, oh my god, you want to tell me you HAVE A WHOLE TIME LINE FOR 150 YEARS SINCE THE CRASH AND EVEN FOR THE TIME BEFORE THE CRASH?! And also all those details (trade routes, maps...) Lore....LORE I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW EVERYTHING! With how Mr. Watanabe said there is so much of it that it could make other 5 shows, my expectations are now high. I need Trigun to keep expanding, I need it all. The world is too intriguing and too good to not be throughoutly wxplored on the screen. This information blew my mind. 400 CONCEPT ARTS?! If you ever - and I hope you do - put out an artbook for TriStamp I'm immediately buying it. From what I've seen of the concept art, it's JAW-DROPPING. AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE EVEN MORE! The motion capture part was also really interesting, and just the talk about the whole process opened my eyes so much. There has been put so much effort into this show, I'm literally teary rn. Anyways, thank you so much for this video/interview, I appreciate it so much and I admire Mr. Watanabe and rest of the team for what they did, do and will do. I really cannot wait for the future of Trigun Stampede and I'm glad that the continuation has been greenlit.

I hope Trash Taste manages to somehow invite a guest from the AAA Japanese gaming industry because I think gaming is one of the topics that they didn't go on the same level of depth as this episode for example. Connor and Joey(I doubt he actually finished any) both have experience with soulsborne and all of the boys love Berserk, so bringing in someone from FromSoft, ideally Miyazaki himself if he could speak english, I think that will make a banger episode. CAPCOM, Nintendo, Square Enix, there are couple of options but I think it would be hard to pull anyone from the major studios to talk(considering the strict policies they might have regarding the infos about studios getting leaked) and let alone invite someone who also can speak english, but I really hope, one day. Also, banger episode, Watanabe Yoshihiro is such a sweet guy.

I love how different the boys are when it comes to entertaining their guests. It feels like Garnt would always go ahead and prepare for the guest episodes, or make an effort to never not have a question for the guest at a given time, Connor seems like he’s always enthusiastic with interviewing guests who he shares experiences/backgrounds with but keeps to himself or allows the other boys with more knowhow with the guest and only asks questions he’s genuinely interested in and which he’s admittedly ignorant of and tries his best to always be open minded, and Joey’s always in the middle who just reiterates others’ points or just says “Banger!” whenever an old school, classic, or obscure anime is mentioned. I honestly think the 3 of them together makes a great team for interviews like this.

I never knew I could be so emotionally attached(or emotional in general) towards a show, movie, book, or any sort of media but what I felt while watching Beastars, I really needed in my life. I didn't even know there were emotions(sensations as he put it) like that in life and, although it sounds a bit silly, I never truly understood what life had to offer before experiencing Beastars. So, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you and everyone else who worked on Beastars, it means so much more to me than you could ever know. If your goal was to change someone's life through anime you accomplished it with me. Thank you.

I appreciate the team at least asked about the possibility of more Land of the Lustrous, even if they didn't name it directly. It wasn't a particularly hopeful answer, but there's always a small chance I guess. Given that the subject immediately followed up with talking about how much more expensive a production becomes when dealing with more characters, etc, I can kind of see why TOHO & Kodansha haven't made more of an effort into getting a sequel made. A continuation would require a loooooot of new assets.

Land of the Lustrous, Beastars, Trigun Stampede, Dorohedoro, etc. are the pinnacle of modern 3DCG anime. Stuff like Paprika and Made in Abyss are the perfect middle-ground of blending traditional and 3DCG together. Honestly if it looks and feels cool I don't think people should care what the medium is. Yes the bear in Golden Kamuy was ridiculously poorly done, but also made it kind of hilarious, though that is one of the few blemishes on an otherwise amazing adaptation.

Trigun as well as Ghost in the shell are the perfect examples of when & what Genres of anime are perfect for CGI. What is the series focus? Is it it Hyper kinetic or movement focused? A series about Gun-Kata & about the future with full body cyborgs are the best fits. Similar example with Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac. It's a very spectacle heavy fighting show. The same reused 2D dragon attack animation gets stall and dull after a while. Yet with CGI; you can always alter the Angle's of the camera position. Add in new animation effects/background. With much greater ease and cost (relatively speaking) you'd need to redo sections of the 2D animation. Which will be tedious for all the checking that needs to be done. Meanwhile with 3D it's simply 'an addition' to the existing asset. Which can always be looked over and improved, improve resolution and texture work. I love the high grade metal in Knights of the Zodic mixed with the 80's eye's and artstyle. 3D CG Anime can absolutely work. So long their is merit & a unique reason to use that medium. Recklessly using 3D animation for every project ruins it's reputation. Especially when used for 'School anime' or Slice of Life. Those series are about emotional connection. So the flat animation medium is less intensive. Thus stimulating. Too much visual data. It's akin to trying to tell a Fairy tale story. Expect the medium is Call of Duty. The adrenaline is going to override the endorphins. Similar case with Gundam/Code Geass. The conflict is important to the the characters and the audience is investments in those story outcomes. Not the 'Epic shounen battle Fighting'. K-ON, Non Non Biyori. All the disposable Isekai anime. CG has effectively the same amount of work intensity regardless of the scene. Where as 2D Anime. Having 2 characters talking in a cafe. Costs nothing. Whilst demanding little resources. Furthermore; certain Video-game the dyes will not translate over properly in 2D. Unless they're extremely Anime/old enough to began as pixel Art games. EG Street Fighter or Super Mario. Kiseki (legend of Heroes.) walks in between that line. So does Persona to a point. Which is why both anime's are very solid promotions. Although, Street fighters anime movie was still constrained by the colour palette limitations. A franchise of the 3D era will not. It'll look awkward or wrong. Tekken is a good example. Facial expressions or designs appear overdrawn and dense. Same with FFXV Anime. Consequently 3D CG projects can definitely be used to reboot/revitalise old IP's. Like Trigun, Saint Seiya and Ghost in the Shell. Saint Seiya in particular often showed the limitations of its Television Anime Productions. As it would be too expensive per an episode to faithfully animate the work with its complicated designs. Obviously if TV Animation Projects had the budget as anime Games did. To produce those opening FMV's. Like in Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, Persona franchise, Final Fantasy (since 1994), Dragon Ball Games, Street Fighter, Tekken, Scarlet Nexus, Mortal Kombat, Metal Gear Solid, Borderlands and Lika a Dragon (Yakuza). Then no one would every complain or be sceptical naysayers. However, we do not live in that economic reality yet. Finally. Star Wars The Clone Wars is a great example of mainstream success with CGI Animated series. Although it must be disclosed that it started in 2008. So despite the fact that George Lucas with paying for the series out of pocket by a significant amount. (1 Million Dollars an Episode, which I broadly believe.) Because it was 2008, very early days of the medium. The costs will've certainly decreased over time until now. It's still a relatively expensive TV Productions. For the equivalent of movie level animation on a weekly basis. Given how Disney pulled the plug after buying Star wars from George Lucas. Replaced it with Star Wars: Rebels afterwards. Which looks significantly worse and is a downgrade from Clone Wars. Should be a board indicator of the Scale of budget Established TV Networks will give for a 3D CGI animation show. (Substantially less) Even with the fundamental declining costs on average compared to 15 years ago. When 3D CGI is a Cutting edge technology. That George Christopher forward just as he did with green screen in/for Star Wars prequel Trilogy. And that's a Western Company. Think about the size difference for a Japanese Publisher/production Committee! Risk Adverse with reluctance to invest into improved Productions. The Venture Capital Steaming Bubble (Boom) is the only reason why Star Wars The Clone wars got renewed life via The Bad Batch. (4K HDR, improvement cost's are not Cheap) Also Dave Filoni proving himself. Whilst working on The Clone wars, creating Ahsoka Tano, The Mandalorian and more importantly being, bare minimum amount of competent. Whilst LucasFilm continually ruin the bed & drag Star Wars IP value with them. I add all this in due to The Clone Wars demonstrating the massive potential for 3D TV Shows. If the property was appropriate for it or enhanced it. Star wars absolutely is. Even more so when you observe all the awkward restrictions in the live action TV shows.
