The one thing I hate about getting old is I remember when all these cars were new and just hit the streets. The price I use to be able to pick these cars up used for is crazy compared to know kind of like a coke that is $2.50 now was only 10 cents when I was a kid it's really sad. Great video.

Me and my Dad would go to the track in 1968 and 1969 in his 1963 corvette 327 340 H.P. W/ long headers and open the dumbs up and he would turn mid 12 in the 1/4 mile. We had better tires on it than what it came with, The 1968 and 69's Camaro's 396/375 horse were turning about the same... I just love the sound of the high compression big cam cars of the 60's and 70's. You have a great looking and sounding RS/SS Camaro, Thanks for the memories..

The two bucks for the 4:10s is interesting. I wonder if that's a 68 vs 69 thing or a Camaro vs Corvette thing. I'm pretty sure, at least with my father's original 69 Corvette, that any gear ratio was included for free when you ordered a posi. Is the Camaro open diff? Looking forward to seeing your grandpa's Camaro vid.

when you're starting a car with a dry carb.,Instead of just dumping fuel down the primaries...Try pouring it down the bowl vent.No fires from backfiring and it sure starts easier. Try it! Your family has a beautiful collection! I raced a 67 RS/SS396 back in the late 80's...11.51 @118 best...

2 questions....was the L78 rated at 425 hp in the corvettes? Also did the 396 suffer from shrouded intake valves compared to thier larger bore brothers? I remember when these first came out, everybody had one it seems, but when the second generation camaro was introduced, alot of people didn't like the looks compared to the 1st gen and they didn't sell as well. Thats the finest 1st gen ive seen!
@thegreenerthemeanerАй бұрын
Yes, Corvettes with L78 in 1965 were rated 425. The actual number from Dyno tests lately says 415. The rating changed to circumvent the GM edict of a 400 hp limit in all cars except full size Impalas and Corvette but the Impala was emptying the 409 bin in 65. The 66 360hp 396 was a one year anamoly that was a mixed up engine that ran well. The 396s did suffer a bit from several design flaws in the heads. 1) The shrouded intake valves but that was due to the smaller bore of the 396. The second was 4 of the cylinders bounced the air flow of the intake off the cylinder wall. This was due to 2 long runner/2 short runner in each head. Angle grinding the heads moved it away and closer to the center of the bore. Third was valve sizing. Not all square port heads were the same valve size nor the combustion chamber, even across the L88. Early ones had smaller exhaust valves, hence the huge lift and duration between intake and exhaust, not that they needed to be exactly the same. The 67 L88s had different heads than the 69s. There is an L88 that the HP Depot guys got from a Chevrolet Engineer who had LOTS of details and documents of the 68 L88. They have a video well worth watching to listen to this man. Lastly, it has been found in later years what combustion chamber, port design and runner volumes make power in a BBC. Some of the greatest work has come in the last 15 years or so but 40 years ago, John Ligenfelter used 781 cast oval port semi open chamber heads with the large valves from the last square port heads, 2.19 intake 1.88 exhaust in them and made crazy power and torque under 5000 rpm. They put them on a .060 over 454 with a .250 longer stroke to make a 496. This was for their dually tow truck. They then started swapping camshafts and intakes that yielded a little over 600 hp on low compression and pump gas. Unheard of numbers from the "low performance" heads of 1973-74.
