Siu Nim Tau Form (詠春小念頭)

The first form of Wing Chun, Siu Nim Tau, performed by Sifu Donald Mak, with a brief summary of movement names.
Note that many movements sequence numbers (over a half) are skipped. They are the intermediate description of movements. The reason is that they are too short in duration, thus not suitable to be presented in a video with normal playing speed. Hopefully we will be able to come up with a decent way to preserve all the movements with detail names and descriptions.
For demonstration purpose, the One TAAN1 Three FUK6 section is performed much faster in this video than normal practicing. The purpose of that section is to cultivate Qi (active awareness to our body internals). For that reason, the section should be practiced very slow pace with proper breathing techniques.

Wing chun element's have the best video's. They show full body with very clear images. I had given up learning Wing Chun because of the complicated forms. But now I can slow down these vids and practice along. So good thanks...

Siu Nim Tau, Siu Lim Tao or Siu Nim Tao??? Since Wing Chun Kung Fu was originated in the central Canton area, Wing Chun terminology should follow Cantonese pronunciation as close as possible. However during the popularization of the art in the western world, spelling of the terms varies according to particular Sifus' gut feeling. The Wing Chun Elements Project respects some wrongly spelt but widely accepted and important terms. Such as Wing "Chun" and "Kung" Fu. In translating the Cantonese terms to English spelling, we follow the most widely accepted standard of Cantonese Romanization Scheme promoted by the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong: www.lshk.org/node/31 . We hope that all non-native Cantonese speakers will be able to pronounce the Cantonese terms properly by following the standard scheme. Back to the question. The first Wing Chun form 小念頭 should be properly romanized as SIU2 NIM6 TAU4. The numbers indicate one of the 9 tones of Cantonese pronunciation system. Most western speakers have difficulty differentiating the 9 tones, as a result, most pronounce the first form as SIU1 NIM1 TAU1. You may notice that our first video uses Siu Nim "Tao", which shall be standardized to "Siu Nim Tau" in later versions. We shall provide a Wing Chun glossary with native voices in the future.

Thank you for your video and education. Let's keep in mind that romanization and pronunciation is far less important than the original Chinese characters which identify the set of movements. As Shakespeare might say - a movement by any other name would be just as effective.

Right, some f up name like using english after the horse stand. Double gan sau(low) double tan sau (up). It would be better if he says the actually name rather than being wtiten in englochino rather than pin yin. For me to say " yee chee kim yeung ma" i will try to write yi/ye chi kim... ma".
