Nice video, thanks Toby and Team! Question I'd still like to get your view on is: what is the effect of doing an SIV course on a light wing, is there a chance you deform it or stretch the lines out of trim?

Hi Sebastian. It's a good question. There is a chance of damaging your wing during an SIV Course. It's very rare (a lot less rare than you damaging your wing on launch!!). When it comes to light weight wings I wouldn't worry about putting your wing out of trim unless you're planning to get into infinity tumbles or something (in which case you'll need a different wing anyway). There is a small chance of cloth tear: lines burning the cloth on a snap re-inflation, though once again you're more likely to get a tear on launch than during SIV, so whilst this is a full answer, in summary I would worry more about NOT doing a course (and the negative impact on safety), than the very minimal chance of wing damage. *The way to really really look after your wing is to NOT FLY IT*

Hi Yiftach. What a good question. The very short answer: 1. Skills (a mastery of wing control below the level you teach, for example I am also an acro pilot but only teach basic acro) 2. A very good eyesight with ability to understand the risks involved in every manoeuvre (bearing in mind the individual pilot and the wing) 3. An ability to clearly and concisely impart key information at exactly the right time. 4. Fast reactions 5. Soft skills - often over-looked but in my opinion they are essential and can double the value of a course: the ability to read the fear vs confidence (under and over) of each individual pilot and coach accordingly. (Could write a book on that point alone) 6. Can a biginner who completed his first 5 flights to take this SIV course ?

Aside from salt, after getting wet, do you check trim (uneven line shrinkage) after washing and drying the wing. Or, is that better done after a few additional flights?

Great Question! A few years ago we made a thorough assessment. We gave a wing that went in the water a full test (all measurements including line length, tissue porosity etc etc). We found the wing to be in perfect condition. I guess if you put your wing in the water on a regular basis it might wear out quicker (and the line sheathing could shrink unevenly etc) but dragging it on rough launches would do the same. Also, it's important to dry the wing out slowly - ie not in direct sunlight. Heat and UV mixed with water is a bad combination. With those caveats, I wouldn't be worried about dunking a wing in the water and certainly a lot less worried than NOT doing an SIV: *A pristine wing with a pilot that can't fly is a much more dangerous wing than one that got wet.*

Nice to see empirical evidence to counter the 'conventional wisdom' that said that getting the wing wet shrinks your lines and then flying stretches them back out, but unevenly (front to back). To be honest, it was that reason that I had been planning to wait until my wing was due for a trim check, before taking an SIV.

@@CineSoar It depends on the quality of the lines. I went twice in water during SIV ( one on purpose to try my reserve), and more than 150h of flying, the trim was out by less than 2 cm. The shrinkage was mostly even. The wing of my friend was out of trim and very difficult to inflate after just one time in the water.
