They should do it like in the merrie monarch here in hawaii. Two categories, kahiko(traditional and ancestral) and auana(modern), every time they perform in competitions, they do both styles of dances.

all the contemporary moves coming out of polyfest is a result of lack of teachers /tutors who actually know how to siva samoa the proper way so they only teach the students what they know only. A lot of the tutors for most schools these days are under 30 years old. Polyfest groups in the 90s to early-mid 2000s had tutors that were either raised in samoa or 1st generation NZers that were raised by parents born in Samoa.
