Welcome back Erik! Good to know you didn't fall off the planet😊 Its heartbreaking to hear about the accident. Working in a hospital I see my share of car accidents and there is nothing worse in my opinion when a child's life is lost. Truly heartbreaking. Not surprising that the family who lost their children attempted to reach out to the people who allegedly may be at fault. The little I do know about their way of life is that they are very forgiving people. Really enjoyed this new format Joe! Thanks so much.
@AmishAmerica Жыл бұрын
Robin thanks much for your comment, yes I agree that must be about the hardest thing someone can go through. And you are right it does fit with the "Amish way" to do that, to try to reach out. I hope they can find as much peace as possible though of course it takes time for anyone.

Erik, we like the new format. Though your file footage and commentary have always been great and informative, we love the topicality and timeliness of this new layout. Please keep up the good work that you do. It has been always been highly helpful for those of us that live within large Amish communities. We truly enjoy our growing friendship that we have been able to foster with our Amish friends here in Bremen, Indiana. Countryside Night Out comes up December 8th from 2pm to midnight here in Nappanee and the surrounding area. We go every year and might it may be an interesting topic for your channel? We are glad you are back "on the air." We enjoyed your new format and your interesting news stories. We like how this format was more informative; if people want more photographs they can be referred to the website. Incidentally, we live within 25 miles of two Amish communities here in central Missouri and, yes, they are very different in their attitudes and their use of technology. And we patronize both communities.

These news stories you shared were extremely interesting. I am a staff writer for a local independent weekly near an Amish settlement, so we work with Amish business owners on a regular basis. They don't want to use the term "Amish" in their advertising - we use terms like handmade or homespun at their request, which I find interesting. The "Amish" term can definitely have a whole range of different connotations, depending on individual perspective. There are definitely business situations in my area that capitalise on it. FYI, I subscribe to the local Amish newspaper, which is really wonderfully done. And one of the very first news stories I covered as a reporter for this news organization was a hit-and-run vehicle homicide trial, where a couple died. The drivers that caused the accident were twin males. Hearing your second news story shared reminded me of that time. Excellent content! I personally like this format better - it's more like a kaffe klatsch.
@AmishAmerica Жыл бұрын
Thank you much Kristin, great comment and insight. I like the handmade/homespun clue words, I guess someone who knows the code might be able to figure out which ads are for Amish businesses.

Glad to see you trudging on..... keep it up..... thanks for all you do. I would like to see more on how we can partake (purchase) directly from or indirectly purchase actual products made by the "Amish" not the marketing name. I am about and hour and a half from the Etheridge TN group and the group from Pontotoc, MS and have been to both and will go back as time and travel permit. I am NOT Amish nor a seeker, but I do have some so called amish ways as in being old fashion on purpose, and use non-tech etc.. like lawn tools, and so on, on the homestead. At the house, I have to be "modern" if that is what you call it, it much more stressful too. But I find the minimalist old fashion way much healthier, and much more peaceful.
@AmishAmerica Жыл бұрын
I guess it goes without saying that buying direct is best way to be sure, but you can always directly ask the seller if it is a third party. I find that those products that are in fact direct from Amish will explicitly say this somewhere on their website and/or product packaging, so you can check that way too. I think I understand a lot of what you mean about more peaceful ways...have recently moved at least for the time being to a much quieter and less-populated place and it has been great

I live in Missouri and we have lots of amish here. I love seeing them and hear them drive by my home. I work at a factory and the guys there brag about found 70 on our small hilly roads. I am scared for the amish as there is no way a car going that fast can stop in time. When I see a buggy I slow down to 20 mph. Cars seems to get very angry with me slowing down. I will take the heat. I hope car drivers can be more passionate and slow down

yay! Nice to see a video from you 🙂 ETA: Watching through your video, Thank you for talking about Michigan Amish!! I'm from Muskegon, Mi and work at Joann, many Amish live just outside of the Muskegon area (Fremont/Newaygo/White Cloud cities) and many of the women and children come in for fabric. I've only been a Muskegon resident for a few years (prior to that, I lived in metro Detroit) so I find the Amish community interesting and follow you because of my small "connection" to Amish individuals who come and shop all the time. Nice to see you're back. Like the new format. Surprised you're not on PBS or NPR with your storytelling abilities. A few new questions: Any Amish that you know of working in broadcasting in Lancaster County, PA? I'm especially thinking of WGAL-TV, channel 8. How do the Amish handle any handicapped in their communities? Blindness? Deafness? Mobility? Finally, how about school discipline? Fights? Violence? Weapons? Drugs? TNX in advance.
@AmishAmerica Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, well WGAL does a good number of Amish stories, but I don't know of any Amish who would work in broadcasting. There are classes for children with special needs in their communities. Schools pretty much empty of any weapons or drugs but I can't discount an Amish boy bringing a pocket knife from home, if that counts :)
