I sure hope SFOT gets loaded with investment. It and Great Adventure were the first parks to get rides removed presumably to replace them with big investments, so maybe upper management sees SFOT and Great Adventure as the legacy six flags parks they most desire to upgrade to being a top park. Makes sense because Dallas is booming and the park is well attended.
@constable012Ай бұрын
I would tend to think that Great America would still be a park they invest in at least somewhat heavily. I don't necessarily see huge coasters like a lot of the other parks, but I could certainly see them totally overhauling the kids/family areas of the park. Maybe cedar fair budget could even give them an elite level coaster as some point in the future using the go karts or roaring rapids areas. I feel like that park performs too well to be left out.

I agree that CGA and SFA are the first to go. I would add King’s Dominion to the parks that will receive investments. Once SFA has been sold, they will use KD to compete against Busch Gardens Williamsburg. They’ve already started the investments with the re-theming of a large section of the park (Jungle Expedition), rebranding/painting I-305, re-profiling/re-tracking Grizzly, and adding two new roller coasters (Trumbili and Rapterra). They’re trying to challenge BGW for the market and that’s more fun for all!!!

@@lanceflx63 That was the rivalry from square one. I think Six Flags America was essentially doomed from birth--it had been a small park mostly devoted to an animal attraction, and I suppose the logic behind making it a big regional park was that Washington, DC didn't have one, but I can state from personal experience that people in the DC suburbs always saw Kings Dominion, Hersheypark and even BGW as quasi-home parks. Because of the traffic, getting to Six Flags America from the western Virginia suburbs isn't that easy anyway, and when KD or Hersheypark offers a better experience, the advantage isn't great.

As an employee at Six Flags Great Escape I don't believe that park is on the chopping block. It has recently received some investment with Bobcat (new for 2024), Hurricane Wings full service restaurant open year round (replacing Johnny Rockets), and has the Lodge. The Lodge is a huge money source for the park. Routinly sold out many times during the year, has the indoor water park, and brings in profit when the theme park is closed. The attendance for Great Escape is steady year-to-year and brings in a solid, reliable income for the company I believe. It's something locals visit yearly and has a huge draw for Canadians.

Obviously Six Flags will consider selling off marginally profitable parks. They have a lot of debt and this is one way to help reduce that burden. The big problem is who is left to buy the parks they want to sell? While there are other somewhat larger operators out there they face the same problem as Six Flags. Some parks particularly those operated in the northern part of the USA will always be seasonal parks due to winter weather. Anybody buying one of the older parks would also have to consider how much more new investment would be necessary to keep them attractive to the local area patrons.

The land on California's Great America has already been sold and the lease on the land ends in 8 years. The only way to save that park is if the County has that land zoned for theme park or commercial development only. That would coax the landowner to sell the land back to Six Flags since they couldn't build residential property The operations at the neighboring Discovery Kingdom are beyond shitty and the city has a 150 ft height limit restricting the size of rollercoasters. The smart thing to do is buy back the land at California's Great America and move Medusa, Superman and Batman to CGA. Also consider tearing down Grizzly and putting Joker in its place or RMC converting it. Either way, the best thing for Six Flags is to merge the rides into one park. I would expect some of the one off water parks to get sold. CGA is a dead man walking at the moment, SFA seems like a likely close/sale. But I think they are going to take a few seasons to see what synergies develop. SFGAm is my home park, but we got CP passes with all park add on this fall for 2025, plan is to visit all the parks that are in a day’s drive next year. That’s 6 ride parks. Everyone picks on MiAdv, because it’s small, but it wouldn’t surprise me it more profitable then most of the midsize parks. It has the advantage of less labor costs and general maintenance costs. I would guess legacy SF Parks are higher on the chopping block because of upgrade costs than legacy CF parks.

I'll be surprised if six flags St Louis remains in the portfolio another 5 years. It has been neglected by it's parents company for over a decade. It has one of the best candidates for an RMC conversion and rumor has it, has already been approached by the manufacturer to reimagine Boss but for some reason Six Flags has ignored it.

I would love to see Discovery Kingdom sold off to United Parks (aka: Sea World) because with all the animals, it just makes sense. However, I don't think this is going to happen because of the prior sale of the land under CGA. If that park somehow doesn't close... This route makes more sense to everyone, IMO,

I am curious about Six flags St. Louis and Worlds of fun. But also another one I m not sure about is six flags anew England
@MattMcIrvinАй бұрын
I think Six Flags New England is sticking around, but *not* getting a big expansion or anything, because it has essentially no competition on the same scale for the market it's serving. There's room in that market for one big amusement park, and SFNE is it. They can make relatively little new capital investment there and it'll keep drawing people in. There's no redundancy in the New England market that the Six Flags/Cedar Fair merger introduces, because Cedar Fair wasn't there at all. SFNE's regional competition is a collection of small parks and water parks: Lake Compounce, Quassy, Canobie Lake Park, Funtown Splashtown USA, Water Country. Some of *those* could be in more danger. I like many of them as parks more than I do SFNE, and they're often more convenient because of location, but they're nowhere near SFNE's league for big rides.
@gus24sevenАй бұрын
Meanwhile the population regions served by both WoF and SFStL are growing and both parks are profitable. They aren't going anywhere unless a buyer makes an amazing offer.
@waynesimpson4081Ай бұрын
California's Great America is already sold to Prologis, a rather profitable and well run tech land developer. So it's gone. The land's too valuable to pass up selling...though how Six Flags managed to screw up a park right next to Levi Stadium and mass transit I'm not sure. Cedar/Six Flags probably would consolidate/expand the park with the Vallejo Discovery Kingdom. It's a good all-year park with decent local and tourist demand. It's more a Cedar Fair type park that a Six Flags, so it's unsure if they'll do the Cedar quality or Six Flags bargain bin approach.
@MCQ-fq6bvАй бұрын
CGA is a low revenue. low EBIDTA, high operational cost park, It made very little money, Net income for the park was mid single digits millions. It's overall finances were 2nd lowest in the chain considering all metrics. Cedar Fair didn't screw anything up. CGA has high costs of operation by being in CA, having to pay $20/hr wages while having little pricing power to charge high prices. A CF park like Knotts also has the high labor costs, but the pricing power, highest pass prices in the chain and 4M plus attendance. They also can getaway without including Knotts Scary farm with passes, you have to buy day tickets or a separate Scary Farm season pass. Also, Cedar Fair knew the issues with CGA. hence they never wanted it. They tried to get it removed from the Paramount deal in 2006. Then they tried to sell it off in 2011, but the deal fell thru at the last minute. They got a bit of luck with change in CA law that made the city have to sell the land and they had right if first refusal under the land lease. They bought it for 150M and sold it within 3 years for 310M, That 160M profit is more than CF would make in operating the park for almost 2 decades. The deal also allowed them to retain the assets of the park to relocate and/or sell off. A great deal for CF to get a mini windfall on a park they never wanted and was not making them much money.

Also people are starting rumors about closing parks. NOTHING HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT CLOSING PARKS. The two words are nowhere to be found. Great Escape is a money maker without much investment. So I see them hanging on to this one. Also growing it is not an option. Queensbury will not allow it. Other local attractions have the towns on their side,

La Ronde is not going anywhere, forst, it is not THAT expensive to run the park for the atendance La Ronde gets, this year, we managed to get almost 30k people in the park in one day, last year, we almost hit 35k. that brigns me to my second point, La Ronde is the money maker of the old six flags chain (i dont have the info for the new six flags chain), it made more money than six flags great adventure and even six flags magic mountain, all of this was confirmed by the park president to the employees (i am one of them), plus, La Ronde has had some investments with an upgrade to condor and a lot of retracking on montre, over the last few years, the food department has had a LOT more invertments then the rides (hopfuly that will change for next year)

Amusing parks have seen an upswing in attendance post covid just as predicted. The skate rink in my city was in the process of getting sold off pre-covid and nobody wanted to buy it because skate rink industry has been dying for or 20 years now...liability insurance is through the roof and the customer base acts like rabid animals. Post covid even has people lining up to go bowling now. One bowling alley on my city started taking reservations during covid and it worked so well they are still doing it and people scramble to make appointments, more popular than ever. A well run amusement park wasn't harmed by covid.

@otterkeeper13Ай бұрын
I saw positive changes start with SFGAm end of 2023 season after the merger was announced, it’s getting a custom B&M, instead of a rumored clone. It’s also a top 20 park in attendance, it close but not too close proximity to KI and CP will help with cross attendance with the all parks pass. The park already has good bones but was mismanaged, and having its original sister park in the chain, they already have an understanding of its layout and flow.
