Even if you don't use it as a poncho it still is one of the lightest tarp shelters you can buy!😊

Would also like to say that 6 moon designs has terrific customer service. These guys are doing it right.....some of the other well-known ultralight shops have lost the customer service aspect....not these guys

Excellent demonstration. And finally, someone demonstrating the Gatewood Cape in poncho mode *with a belt mod*... yeah, seems super obvious, but of the half dozen previous videos from other channels they all had the poncho billowing in the breeze and describing that as a problem. Sheesh. Thanks for the obvious and useful. I also appreciated your setup in the snow. Not sure you're advocating its use in winter conditions, but I am curious. My one concern about the tarp setup is how high off the ground it is -- wind, rain, snow will surely come in, inflate the setup, possibly pull it out of the ground if winds are strong enough. Curious about your experiences. I'll look for other videos you may have posted on this item. Thanks again. Great job.

The cape can be set up at whatever distance you want it from the ground. The stake cords at each cornet have 3-4 settings, the closest one in will keep it close to the ground. For hot nights, higher for ventilation.

I'd love if you included the set up in these videos, or if you have it in another video, maybe link that one in your info with this one. Great reviews, and I appreciate the details about the adjustments you make.

it is actually pretty straightforward and easy to set it up like a tent... the only issue might be that it is not fully sealed

@@landflame Though, the Gatewood Cape is easily seam sealed. Not really an issue in practice.

What’s it like in strong winds?

You didn't show all of it's features. from what ive seen but I'm probably wrong. What is that square patch that looks like it covers a stove jack? Is it the pocket that the poncho/shelter fits into? I bet it is.

What do you do when it’s pouring and you need to switch from cape to tarp mode, and the reverse?

I'm a bit late here, but ive had to do this several times and here are the two options I've come up with. 1.) Is to just go under a good covering tree, squat down and drop your bag inside your poncho while still wearing it. Grab your stakes, and set your pole length. Then as fast as you can, take the thing off, stake out 4 primary points, throw your bag under it and hop in. The remaining 2 points can be done from inside the poncho easily. This can take about 1 minute, if you time it right between down burst and be patient, you can usually get it done without getting all that wet. 2.) For when it's absolutely coming down, perfect a very weird method where you stake it out from the inside, insert your pole and tighten it all up. This requires flexibility but it can be done without taking the poncho completely off. Doing so only gets your arms wet while reaching out of cover from the poncho to stake out your lines.

@@tylerreeves8026 Excellent tips, and of course, if conditions permit, you could just hunker down under that tree with poncho on and gear inside (as you mentioned) and wait for a break in the weather. Not the worse thing you might have to do. :)

@@Greg_M1 Use a Sea to Summit smaller poncho as a ground sheet and for setting up the 6moon cape up in rain wear the S2S poncho for rain protection... Peace outside :)

Hey guys! I'm gonna mod my gatewood for an attempt at a few sections of the GDT this summer. Did you get 2.2mm zing-it and lash-it? And was that zpacks zline for the hood? You're right, the hood cord is not great.

Very good video. How much did you pay for it? Where did you buy it from? How low does it cover in the back when you are wearing it over your backpack? How many tracking polls did you used when pitching it in tent mode? I am blind and cannot see details in the video. This is why am asking all these questions. Thanks so much for sharing. God bless you.

TainoXtreme I wanna say I paid around $125. With a pack on it goes to the back of my knees (6ft tall). Minimum of one trekking pole but I prefer two. Lemme know if you have any more questions. Thanks!

I love the weight saving by combining a raincoat with a tent, well until I had to visit the bathroom in pouring rain..... Sorry about the negative but it is not practical. I still love your video and gave it a thumbs up :)

I pair my Gatewood with a Houdini windshirt which is very water resistant. This solves the wicked pisser dilemma for me.

I own one as well. However, it is waterproof thus absurd for Summer temps wearing it as a poncho. I made a Dyneema poncho/tarp put it on and then quickly took it off due to the heat build-up. Additionally, a poncho/tarp worn as a poncho catches of shrubbery and flays in the wind - no thank you. As a tent it is adequate, but for Winter, you should put it to the ground to obtain its' inherent warmth and do something about the hood re: insects and temp control.

I just do not get that tight of a setup with my Serenity + Zpack pocket tarp. The new version of the Serenity is an absolute downgrade. They basically eliminated the bath tub floor. Only could get my hands on the new iteration sadly. Modless, the setup is very flimsy
