Jeff, I am a middle school teacher of 10 years looking to transition out of public school. I have looked into corporate training and instructional design and feel it would be a great fit, especially considering the background I have. I wanted to say that I have watched a few of your videos already, and I appreciate the clarity you provide and the great tips for someone like me looking to break into the field.

Jeff, thank you so much for this resource. I'm changing careers, and I'm really interested in ID. I feel I have work experience with all 6 points you listed here, so that is encouraging. My concern is I have no formal education is this field. Do you feel that is necessary? If so, is there a class or two you would highly recommend that would at least get my foot in the door at an organization?

Hi John! Take a look at the articles I linked to in the description for that video. Also, I have another video you should look at where I talk about degrees/certificates/courses: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2mchpeXaJeniqs That video also has more info/links/resources to look at in the description. Short answer to your question, though, is no, I don't think you have to have a formal education in instructional design to get a job and be successful.

Another very useful video! I excel in a few of those skills being a Math instructor previously. A few I have to polish such as Research and Project Mgmt. of course. A few questions: 1. You mentioned Powerpoint. I'm assuming you designed some courses with Powerpoint. To what extent can you develop a course with PP compared to let's say Articulate? In other words, is it worth doing a course or even a Portfolio entry with PP? 2. What do you think of the current ID job market? I feel it's saturated with applicants and next to impossible to find an entry level job that would provide me with a learning opportunity. Thanks.

Thanks, Norbert! I'm designing two courses right now in PowerPoint. They are both virtual instructor-led courses and the trainers will train from the PowerPoint. If you are asking about e-learning courses, I mostly use PowerPoint for storyboarding. I have also built courses in PowerPoint (or taken existing PowerPoint presentations) and then imported into Articulate Storyline or another e-learning authoring tool. Usually, though, I will do an outline or storyboard in PowerPoint and then build in the authoring tool. Yes, I would definitely include any relevant PowerPoint(s) I have created in my portfolio if they are a good representation of my work. My impression right now of the job market is that there seems to be a TON of interest in instructional design except that it also seems like a lot of the people interested in "instructional design" are actually interested in e-learning development. (see this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKCpZqxubLObj9U ) I'm not sure a lot of people (based on a lot of the comments and questions I see) really fully understand what ID is or what an ID does.

@@yourlearningcareer With Regard to PP, I had an interview with a Nonprofit that uses PP and I thought that was a disadvantage because they didn't use Articulate. I even asked if they plan to implement it? ( I hope I didn't shoot myself in the foot with that question).
@yourlearningcareer2 жыл бұрын
It's not a bad question. It shows you are knowledgeable about tools in the industry. My last company didn't have Articulate. I was the one who got them to buy it. I made a business case to my boss and she agreed. You could possibly do the same.
@NDemanuele12 жыл бұрын
@@yourlearningcareer They did say they plan to implement Articulate or something like it down the road. Unfortunately, I didn't get it. But I learned something valuable: I been applying to several companies and never get a response. Landing this interview was a win, but more importantly I learned to target Non-profits. Previously I was an instructor for a big Non-profit and they are a Non-profit too in the same sector - Education. So I think if I start targeting Non-profits I'll eventually get somewhere.

These are all spot on! I've been an ID for about 10 years and am applying for jobs and as I listened to these traits and your descriptions I was taking notes. Because these are great points to explain on the skills and strengths I have and how I've overcome some challenges like the being too creative and taking too long on projects because of that. Except the PM skills. I guess I need an ID coach for that (if they exist!) or need to do some research. I have an ADHD brain as well and this has always challenged me and been an issue on some jobs that have tight timelines. Really great video to share with people exploring the ID field! Another thing is I really want to value and care about the training I'm creating and I haven't connected with a company yet that both pays well and truly serves people and helps change lives like in mental health or self growth industries I'm guessing. It's always about creating training for people to learn how to use software. Money can motivate me so far and I have to pay my bills of course, but when working over the years somewhere it doesnt really help me keep my nose to the grindstone and I start to fade in my productivity. Because I don't really deeply value the learning products or what the company stands for. That's just me of course.
@yourlearningcareer Жыл бұрын
I can very much relate to ADHD as this is something I struggle with constantly. Keep looking for a company that aligns with your values and interests. They do exist! And it does definitely make a difference when you find that. Best of luck and thank you for your kind words!

I need to know what competencies and skills of instructional design we have to follow as teachers. Two things skills and competencies I would emphasize if I would apply instructional design with my content I teach. so which direction Can I use ? the first one , a international standards as following (IBSTPI -ACET ATD) that show the skills and comptenses . Second , there are some researchers tend to get the skills from ADDLE Model , and the competences from their experiences . So my question is which direction I have to use ?.
@yourlearningcareer11 ай бұрын
Personally, I am most familiar with ATD so that is what I usually recommend as far as a professional organization to follow.
