Like other commentators, I would like to express my gratitude for posting this video. I just had my second interview with my university's dean for the instructional design department. I say my university because currently I am teaching for the visual communication design department and my department chair suggested that I apply. Your mock interview is so close to what I encountered in fact I anticipated the questions, especially handy was the question for the committee, what is your work day like? Now that question went over well, it brought about laughter. I meet with the search committee for an hour, meet with a second search committee and did a 15 min course presentation followed by Q&A. Then I meet with the Dean for about 45 min for a debriefing, then she asked if okay to check my references and my availability. I will know in two weeks. Again, thank you.

I watched most of this before my Higher Ed virtual team interview this morning. This was great! I think my questions focused on what I could bring to the team, my ability to collaborate, how I like to communicate, how I handled a difficult situation with team members. I also had a scenario that I was sent the day before that I did a write-up on and then discussed. Even if I'm not a fit for the position, it was a really great experience. That question about whether you are replacing or are a new member was GREAT!

This is extremely valuable video to have as a reference for anyone new to L& D. For clubhouse; If clubhouse is what I read it is, are there any members that could send me an invitation? it looks like I can't join without an invitation from a current user to get to use it.

Thanks Mike! Can you join the "Instructional Design Clubhouse Group" on LinkedIn? We can get you set up with an invite from there.

Hi @Devlin Peck, do you know if Cara's book on interviewing is out yet? Or is the preview still available? As a later viewer of this video, I don't have access to the original chat from the webinar. I looked on her LinkedIn, website, etc. but don't see anything. Thank you!

Very informative thank you. Question, is there L&D without the software design component of it? For example, curriculum only and you work with the design team to make it come together.
@DevlinPeckYT2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Yes, some people focus only on the instructional design side of things, and then they hand off a storyboard to an eLearning developer who actually brings the project to life.

What do you think Cara means by her question (at around 41:00) "Where does L & D sit in the business?" She says it's a really important question that candidates often don't ask, but I'm not sure what she means by that (I know what L & D is, just not what she means by this question).
@DevlinPeckYT2 жыл бұрын
Good question, Lauren! I think this would get at what level of access L&D has to decision-making. Is the L&D team sitting within HR? Or are they reporting directly to the CEO? Or are they a subset of the marketing department (not common, just another example)? Hopefully that helps a bit :D

What would be tips for negotiating salary if going full-time after freelancing? That is always a tricky area I feel, especially as recruiters insist on last ctc. Any tips on this would be really helpful.
@DevlinPeckYT2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Is there a salary that you’re aiming for? I’d just lead with that 😃. And up to you how transparent to be about your freelance earnings.

I understand that this was a mock interview, but the positive feedback throughout the interview is confident builder that you don’t receive in the real world. The results should’ve come at the end.

Thank you for the constant guidance. I am interested in transitioning from higher ed teaching to higher ed id roles. I have 6+ years of teaching experience and I am building up my portfolio to incorporate all skills necessary for ID. I am volunteering as an id at 2 places to learn the ideas while collaborating with people. While rewriting my cv, do I add the volunteering experience in my experience section? I am confused because in my other volunteer jobs I have worked as a subject matter expert making ppt videos and online learning modules for a diverse community worldwide. It signifies my support for inclusion and diversity. Can you please help ?thanks in advance.
