Love this! Couldn't agree more as a Canadian. I have spent the past 5 years living outside of Canada and the last three retired and travelling. WAY cheaper to live in SE Asia and other regions than Canada - and way better weather and FUN! KL was where I first got stranded during COVID and it was awesome! I lived in the Hilton for $30 usd a night!!

as a Brazilian, I wouldn't recommend Rio for living (actually not even for touristing, there will be a target on your back if you don't/can't blend in). Safety will always be the most important issue. There are better places (Florianópolis doesn't get the hype it deserves, it's as beautiful as Rio but without much of the danger, AND it has the most beautiful women in all of the country)

I am a Canadian living in Recreio. There is me and one other foreigner I know of near me. I feel a heck of a lot safer in Recreio than Copacabana. Floripa is way too cold in the winter for me. Imagine living in Brazil but freezing, that is not what we are Canadians picture Brazil as. Sure its safer, but everywhere has it's trade off and I don't even stay in the water in Floripa in the summer its too cold. If someone has always wanted to visit Rio, I say they should and just take a few precautions ( no jewellery etc). No one shits all over Rio like Brazilians who don't live here or have never even been.

As a Brazilian I've always been somewhat scared of Rio de janeiro (the city), besides safety, l think it's too corrupt and dirty, l don't feel safe drinking the water etc. but there are other parts of the state that I'd like to check out.

Yes, I was born in Rio and moved to California 30 years ago. Love the city and people but it’s too hard to live due to traffic, violence and bureaucracy. I visit often and after 3 weeks I’m ready to return to CA. Sorry to say. 😂

My wife and I just returned from Playa del Carmen for a 10 day workation and are seriously considering investing in property there to turn into STR and stay at whenever we please. The food selection and quality blew us away and there is so much to do and see with beautiful beaches. Love it there!

I was in Lisbon 2 weeks ago to study the real estate market. There are still places around Lisbon that are affordable ($4,000/m2) but you will either have to commute about an hour to downtown Lisbon or accept tot live in a very unattractive neighborhood (e.g. Benfica). However prices have become totally ridiculous (both purchase and rental) in the more desirable neighborhoods where you really want to live if you are a high-net-worth individual: $8,000 to $12,000/m2 to buy. $1,000 to $1400/month for a one-bedroom for rent. Absolutely not worth it anymore if you ask me, especially when compared to a world-class city like Paris where prices are not significantly higher anymore in the best neighborhoods (about $12,000/m2). Speculation in Lisbon is currently out of control and prices will probably crash badly in 2023/2024 as interest rates go up and recession strikes a highly indebted country like Portugal. Lisbon was a diamond in the rough 15 years ago, now it has become an overhyped, overpriced, over-AirBnBed tourist destination in spite of its intrinsic qualities (nice people, interesting culture, low crime, good climate).

Benfica is one of the best neighborhoods in Lisbon and is right next to the largest city based park in Europe lol. Agree with the rest of the assessment though. I've been going out to Lisbon since 2016. It's still one of my favourite cities in the world but the prices now are the same as Madrid for example. They're actually a bit higher than Rome. Not great for freelancers.

In India, the infrastructure is terrible. In Delhi, the pollution levels are so high that children get dry eyes. In Bangalore the roads are so bad that you can't even call them roads. Let us be very clear. This message is for expats and people in general, it is not for people who are perfectionists, not for people who are looking for places to move to permanently. The casual visits won't give you any real idea of what it is like to live with aspirations. Investing from a distance in equity or other stocks is different from setting up a business and finding accommodation is horrendously difficult. India is not particularly tax-friendly. It is onerous. It is too closed.

Rio de Janeiro is famous for its street violence. It's not at all an expat place. There are more convenient places in Brazil like Florianapolis, Curitiba, smaller towns of the northeast

I was surprised to see Rio make the list versus other places in Brazil. I love Rio but I experienced first hand the violence that can occur there. I think it’s takes a certain type of expat to live in Rio. I could do it, but it wouldn’t be my first choice. Top for me I think may be Belo Horizonte or Brasilia are tops for me. São Paulo, maybe the outskirts far from the city proper. I like Salvador as well, but like Rio, things can turn on a dime. Still maybe outside of Salvador proper. Thank goodness, as Andrew did speak to, Brazil has so many places I’ve experienced that it’s still one of my bases.

@@42fern Actually, I think Sao Paolo proper could be great for expats. Direct international flights to two major airports (last I checked), very cosmopolitan, and easy to get around, lots of art and culture. Plus some serious mega malls. However, as Andrew often points out, everyone’s needs and goals are different. For me, air quality is paramount anywhere I live. Although I like São Paulo and have been there many times over the last two decades, I’ve learned that I don’t do well in the very dense greater metropolitan area more than a week or so. Although, in this era, a good N95 mask could improve that. However outside the metro area was awesome, and I’m glad I’ve had such an experience as it’s made me look more holistically when evaluating places. So, I wouldn’t write off São Paolo as a whole. It’s huge and diverse. I just don’t do as well respiration-wise in major metropolitan cities as I did as a youth.

Friendly local people, safe, better consumer prices for most goods and services, good health service, lovely beaches, very happy with the quality of food and we're both very relaxed here! I would recommend a long trip here just to investigate different areas. Different regions have different weather, plus there's always The Azores or Maderia in the Atlantic. Nazare is great for surfing. Porto, Lisbon and Coimbra if you want great art and architecture? The choice is yours. We love it. It's not paradise, but we think it's hard to beat.

@@GrikWorldNomad Over run? Portugal has a population of around 10million. Our small city has a population of 100k and probably about 500 retirees/foreigners from many countries. The Algarve is mainly British - we did not want to live there! Our city just south of Lisbon it has US, Canadians, British, French, Ukrainians, Belgians, Australians and many others. I don't think any nationality has overrun the country (outside of The Algarve). There are plenty of areas all over Portugal where it's a must to speak the local language. We are taking lessons, and the local people are always very receptive to us. We now have local friends and foreigners alike. We meet regularly, sketch together or just pass the time when we meet in the city square. We have found our home. Why not visit to see for yourself?.

I am an American living in Austria. I have a residence visa and my wife is Austrian. My tax rate is 25%. I know that you will scoff at this because you are all about taxes. My concern is what do I get for my tax money. A few months ago my wife was seriously ill and hospitalized. She is only 31 years of age. If we had to pay the bill it would have been over $200K Euros. However, medical comes out taxes. We paid absolutely nothing.

Rio was very dangerous when I went there. So many other amazing smaller Brazil cities. Porto Alegre or along the coast north of Rio. Rio would be my last choice. btw..you really need to learn portuguese to spend time there.

Unless you're a peasant, Mexico is an income tax hellhole , legally, if you stay there long enough to become a Mx tax resident. Plus even after you leave Mexico, you must pay Mx a high tax rate on your worldwide income for that year plus the 3 following years! Or else they can extradite you and then squeeze you. Unbelievable how some westerners ignore Mx tax, and then later the Mx tax gauntlet falls on them, like Andrew has spoken about.

I’m a bit surprised Rio was on the list. Florianopolis is the number one place for me in Brazil. For my trifecta, in Latin America, I base myself in Costa Rica and visit Florianopolis and Medellin at least once a year. I also enjoy short trips to Guatemala and Nicaragua. In Asia, I base myself in Pattaya and very easy and cheap to fly anywhere in Asia from Bangkok.

@Mobenal in a year, I have 3 bases to live and then travel around these base cities. In Asia, it’s Pattaya, which is close to Bangkok airport. With Pattaya/Bangkok as a base, this year I visited KL, Singapore, Jakarta, Bali, Phillipines, Vietnam and Cambodia. Next year, my travel plans from Bangkok include Australia/New Zealand and Laos. My 2nd base is in San Jose Costa Rica and visit Florianopolis, Medellin, Guatemala, Nicaragua,etc. My 3rd base (trifecta) is in Europe, but varies year-to-year. Next year Ireland. Following year, maybe Scandinavia or Portugal, etc. I have a passion for travel and found this works for me, but everyone different.

@@MyRolrol I own my 2br condo in San Jose Costa Rica. When traveling, I rent out on Airbnb and VRBO for an income stream. I get $100 avg/night and avg 21 days a month for occupancy. I would never be able to get these rental rates in Medellin or in Pattaya, so I rent on a monthly basis as needed. For both Medellin and Pattaya, I pay about $500/month for furnished condo, including all utilities. It makes much more financial sense to rent then buy in these lower cost countries.

On business in Singapore some years ago - our Chinese host (Shout Out - Willie Koh!!) took us about 50 clicks into Malaysia in one of his beautiful vintage Mercedes sedans to see a satellite plant, and visit one of his relative's restaurants. I'll never forget the experience, it was incredible! From the stunning natural beauty to the variety and abundance of everything - it seemed like a paradise to me. First time ever tasting the Queen of Fruits - Mangosteen - plucked right off a tree in a parking lot - have never tasted anything like it since. The profusion of colorfully painted and gilded shrines and temples, the ample homes, the enormous all-product outdoor markets - it was like being in Disney Land when I was a kid - only affordable!

São Paylo is WAY better than rio. Much safer, much reacher, much nicer people that don't want to outsmart you all the time to rip you off. Also, insanely hot weather and scorching sun. If that's what you want, maybe go to Espírito Santo or even Bahia states, otherwise I'd say São Paulo and Florianópolis are much nicer places in Brazil. If you're wealthy, it might not be worth moving to a cheap place, plus taxes are much higher there because anybody that makes more than a few hundred of dollars per month is already considered middle class, so you'll likely end up in a very high bracket.

Since last October, for any residency permit there you must now deposit $1M into a bank there @1% forever, even tho short-term deposits stateside pay 4% and long term deposits pay over 5% per year in the US, and rising.

The only city of this list I would suggest is Lisbon, and probably Mexico City. The other cities all have either climate, or political, or societal issues I could not accept to actually live and work there. The worst of this list is Dubai. Awful climate, dictatorship, open slavery - how a decent person can choose this city as home is beyond me.

Just read about their perks and benefits: tax-free system, no interest mortgage, 20k $ as a gift when you marry, free education in any point of the world. People who are coming from poor countries, they are happy to work there because this is how they can support their families. Nobody brought them there by force. They are free to leave at any time. But they do everything to stay there. I suggest you to first visit that country to have your own opinion and stop reading western propaganda about "bad bad Middle East". However, it is true, that some people don't have a problem with living under the dictatorship there, especially when they are Emirates or rich Expats, which can live in a system designed to serve them. You may want to read the novel "The Death Ship" by B. Traven - maybe you then understand something about the connotation between "coming out of free will" and slavery.

They built their country themselves from scratch and they have full rights to set their rules. I just cannot wrap my mind around the fact that western people think that their style/way of living is the only correct and acceptable. Again, it's a supply and demand situation. They come because they need to feed their starving families - and because they don't know what they are travelling into. They don't know that they have to give up their Passports, sleep four-bed rooms crammed with 12 beds, or simply won't get their pay, no days off and no leave. And because its a dictatorship, they have no chance to fight back. Just inform yourself: their is a special court in UAE to protect the rights of the expats. Just how many cases did they solve up to now, and which of those in favor of the expat?

I'm very aware of this court as I filed a case when my employer didn't pay salary for 3 months straight. I submitted a case at 1:29 PM. At 1:34 my employer called me directly and ask about the reason why I decided to complain. Apparently he received a notification explaining to him that if the case is not resolved all his possessions in UAE will be locked (bank accounts, properties etc.). He also didn't have a right to leave a country. So, he was very worried about the situation and payed off everything + compensation within 3 days. What I can tell exactly that law works perfectly fine over there. Disclaimer: at that time I was holding a passport of 3rd World country.

Lisbon is quite expensive.. a “family” house in a good area will cost a minimum of €2.2M (not all of us want to live in an apartment where you are subject to noise/nuisance from neighbors) Super quality of life though …. Portugal is a beautiful country but I find the culture a little sleepy. They are so different than their Spanish neighbors. Kind of melancholic. It's not a place where one feels "inspired" if you are on the younger spectrum. Portugal really lacks spunk. It's a great place to live for retirement but if you have an entrepreneur spirit it's just not very exciting. It's also gotten so expensive and not sure it's worth it really. It's all built up for foreigners. Unless locals are rich, no one can pay those rents or sale prices.

I am a US citizen and OCI. I have the legal right to residency in India....my heritage. India doesn't allow dual citizenship, and an Indian passport is not great. If you want a nice city for expats, this is a place. However; I wouldn't choose Bangalore. I would go slightly South to Mysore...or slightly East to Coimbatore. Coimbatore is a smaller city...Mysore is also smaller. However, Coimbatore in India is starting to attract startups also. Think of Coimbatore the same way one thinks of Las Vegas or Phoenix, when they think of San Francisco Bay. Bangalore is obviously the equivalent of San Francisco Bay. Coimbatore still has the air of The textile Mills of Manchester, and the drier climate of Phoenix or Las Vegas. Mysore is perhaps more like the following...take something like San Antonio, and stick it where Berkeley is relative to San Francisco City. That's Mysore...historic to the core, but modern enough, and attracting techies.

Yerevan is a clean city with very friendly people and great culture. The food is superb, and fresh vegies are plentiful. The service is unlike anything in the US. If you come to a restaurant that is full, they will bring out a table for you. Armenians are very warm people and love to make friends. They do you a favor - they expect a friendly gesture from you in return, like a dinner invitation rather than a payment. The problem is that there is a military conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. And Turkey is not favoring Armenia either. Otherwise Armenia is great.

We relocate expats to live abroad to many destinations. I would say that the time zone and the proximity is one of the biggest concerns for most of our customers. This are people who actually pay 10k to 20k for an international moving project and has the resources to invest abroad. About Mexico City, my parents in law live there and they don’t like the actual president policies. For example friends told us that they replace the custom agent with the army. Do you live in India? Because I think what you're saying is completely wrong and very far from reality. Or maybe you're Muslim and showing soft corner but I have lived in all 4 corners of country with 5+ years everywhere and have good on groud practical experience.

@@vishal1088 I too lived in India for very long time And i must say people usually are good but if you are female or living with family then muouslim neighborhood is best and safest place to live As india have worst record in terms of women safety but in mouslim neighborhood they(neighbors) don't allow such things to happen with any female even once I had personally seen how they cought a thief and beaten him bad on street for patty theft that thief committed

The best things about Bengaluru (Bangalore) are the weather and the food. It is about 1000m above sea level, so it is generally pleasant throughout the year. KL in comparison is a humid hot house like Singapore. Nowhere else in India do you find the variety in food as in Bengaluru. But the infrastructure is bad, and the streets are dirty and smelly in most of the city. It is also one of the greenest cities in India. You would not want to go live in India for tax purposes, but to be part of an extraordinary trajectory into the future, especially of Bengaluru. A city with 1 million IT professionals out of a population of 12 million, and private companies that annually employ more than 50,000 engineers, beckons the brave. More exposure of the city to the world might even bring the discipline and cleanliness that defines a world city of the future, which, alas, it is not at present, despite all the hi-tech.

I’m from the US and am currently in the Dominican Republic. Plenty of good priced food. Cheaper cost of living. Private health insurance is reasonably priced. I have a pay as you go cell phone. We have all kinds of international food in supermarkets. Price smart is like Costco. Malls are also very nice. I live in an agricultural region plenty of free clean drinking water and crops and livestock here. Life is slower paced. But there isn’t crazy violence here like in nyc. There are many immigrants here from China Venezuela Columbia and many other countries. There are great bilingual private schools. Lots of nice hotels beaches and resorts. In cities there are food delivery apps like Uber,Uber eats, Pedidos ya, didi, didi food and probably some more. So it’s getting more convenient.

I love your channel. I know your target audience is more very high income people, but if someone is in the FIRE community for example, and has a low income in the USA but a few million in savings, the tax law seems VERY beneficial to them. 0% capital gains tax for people earning under $80,000 in income, Federal income taxes are also very low for people making under six figures after credits/deductions (I know they’re terribly high for high income earners).

You seem to assume a relatively low inflation growth. Suppose the US experience 20% inflation annually, which blossomed into 50% within your lifetime. How far would your millions go? But of course they are probably in capital which appreciates, but if you sold your investments to live off of, you'll find you're in a very high tax bracket, even though it doesn't buy much
