There have been a number of opinions expressed alongside this video concerning why Steve only played on the encores. Of course, it was a long while back now, and memories have probably faded somewhat, but I thought it would be of interest to read the account that Steve gives in his autobiography, A Genesis in My Bed (it’s a great read, I’d thoroughly recommend it). Of course, this is Steve’s view, but I cannot see much to argue against! “Whilst I was busy risking my life in Brazil,” [the previous page had reported his hang gliding experiences!] “out of the blue I received a call from my Dad who said, ‘I’ve heard that your band mates are reforming with Peter Gabriel to do a show at Milton Keynes… … ‘ This was for a concert to enable Peter to help out WOMAD, an organisation giving a chance to great musicians from around the world. Dad and I agreed that I should be a part of it. “The following day, I hightailed it back to the UK and flew in to join the guys for the show. As they’d already rehearsed up their stuff, I was only able to join for the encores, but I was thrilled to be involved with the team once more. Despite the heavens opening to incessant rain, the crowd was as enthusiastic as the band! Both on stage and backstage, we were all excited to make a rousing noise together again. It was a terrific atmosphere as we’d all come together for the right reasons… No profit motive… This was a move to help others out. We were hugging each other… … … [backstage] Pete broke into Auld Lang Syne as we all linked arms. No stiff upper lips that night!”

Peter was expecting his first child and couldn’t give 100 % to the band. The band wanted to break through worldwide and was young and wanted it all. Steve felt his songs and contributions wasn’t part of the band.
@Schimnesthai4 жыл бұрын
I was listening to some The Lamb Tour bootlegs, and realized that Peter lost his voice so many times, Phil was playing the drums and already filling the voice gaps when Peter couldn't, i read somewhere that Genesis songs where paying a toll on Peter's voice and that he "accomodated" his solo career to fit better with his voice, since the high notes he did on Genesis albums where really hard to achieve after. Aside from that, Peter couldn't give %100 of his time to the band as other reply said. Steve was mostly absent for The Lamb do to an injury (or sickness i don't remember), Peter left, Genesis was in danger and Steve decided to carry anyways with his solo career because he thought Genesis was done for, thus leaving Tony Banks to use most of his ideas for A Trick of the Tail (even though he could've done the same as Steve thus killing Genesis). It's interesting to me that everything changed after Steve shaved, as if he was confident enough to go solo and show himself more, Genesis kinda helped him with this by letting him present songs alongside Phil and Mike during the Trick and Wind tours. To resume, Steve wasn't happy with the direction Genesis was taking, they weren't in sync anymore, The Lamb was really a bad time for the band's relationships.

Sam, you need to listen to Genesis Archive, Vol. 1- 1967-1975. From the dates it's obvious that Peter and Steve were still there. I never knew it existed (and never hear anyone talking about it) until a friend leant me his copy (it's a 4 CD set) and it contains my favourite live rendition of Firth of Fifth. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the piano intro and the live ambience isn't as good as Seconds Out (it's obviously a smaller, more intimate venue) but it is still epic and it is all the original members. It also contains all of the Lamb, Supper's Ready, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, Stagnation and others, all live, with both Peter and Steve.

Amazing. PG lost a bundle on W.O.M.A.D. and the band he voluntarily walked away from seven years earlier (when they were on the cusp of becoming the most successful progressive rock group on the planet no less) stepped up to help him out. The crowd on this is amazing too, singing along beautifully. It must have been an incredible day for everyone lucky enough to have been there.

Hideous weather all day. I missed the Garden Wall warm up gig at the Marquee. I remember getting to the front of the queue just as the gates opened in the morning, grey skies, rain, rain and more rain, Talk Talk not going down well, with wedges of grass thrown at them. Almost gave up, standing in the rain, sinking in the mud near the front, looking at the lone burger van on the hill, starving. But then Jonathon King did his chat, holding up what he said was the demo tape Genesis sent him all those years ago and all tiredness vanished. The pall-bearers walked on stage, to 'Back In N.Y.C.' laid the coffin down, and out burst Peter/Rael. And we were off!! Incredible gig. Nothing like it since, emotional and spellbinding. Steve at the end was a lovely way to close. Soaked, nightmare even finding the car in darkness afterward, let alone driving back. Not like open air gigs now! Ill for a week but worth it! Genesis never disappointed, saw many gigs around the UK, Peter as well. But this one will always stand out. Thank you for posting. Great to hear again. In the dry!

I travelled to the gig from Sth Wales on my way home to Dundee on annual leave from the RAF. Kit Bag and all. My RAF boots were the only thing that day that stopped me sinking in the mud. My memory of Talk Talk was more the bottles and fruit being thrown at them than grass mud balls (Whoever booked them to open needed their bumps felt). But as you say the moment that coffin was carried on stage and Gabriel came out it was like heaven on earth. I still have the "Six of the Best" t-shirt from that day and wore it when my son and I went to see them at Twickenham and also Glasgow on the "Last Domino" tour. It still fits 42 years after it was bought. Genesis have been so much part of my musical journey through life, its hard to believe we'll never se the like of them again!!!

@@alantaylor8900 Excellent memories! It was a sea of bottles for them but I do remember chunks of turf which only stopped when one hit Chester's kit... I had a programme and a t-shirt - think I got the programme before we went in and left in the car, which is why it survived! The surge in the crowd when Steve came on - and how happy Peter was - after all the delights we'd heard - was pretty special. Yes, Genesis never disappointed, either with Peter or Phil. I especially enjoyed the NEC series for the 'Genesis' album - those were special gigs. Couldn't bring myself to see the last set of gigs, appreciate why so many did go but for me, the memories of those years of special gigs, the band at their peak, that was more than enough for me. And very pleased to see those memories being revisited with some of the wonderful material posted on here. Fabulous!

This was my first proper outdoor concert at 17 yrs old. A mate and i travelled up from Kent. I don't think we knew it was going to be so wet or didn't listen to our Mums! Denim jackets, jeans and running shoes - not appropriate rain ware. I enjoyed Talk Talk but recall all the lumps of turf and bottles flying at them. Darkness fell, as did the rain. Recall lifting my foot and my shoe had come off in the mud. Lovely. The concert was magic. Hearing PG signing live on our fav Genesis tracks (we had only heard him on borrowed LPs and learned the words). Don't recall how long it took to get back through London...some kind folks gave us a ride. I have seen the band 4 times since but still have that one concert Tee shirt - it now fits my teenage son. Met PG in Toronto in early 2000s and got to chat with him about the concert and also the Canadian band The Musical Box (who do Genesis concert recreations). He was most engaging and interested to meet someone who had great memories of that night in 1982. Thankyou Bruce for posting this - such a privilege to listen again.

I was just 18 back then...Special bus trip from Paris where i grew up to see this un-missable feast. After an 8hr trip, the bus doors opened onto a field track of an outer-London suburb, upon which the rain would soon start falling NON STOP for the next 14hrs, without dampening the enthusiasm of thousands of fans though, waiting and waiting for their heroes to make their appearance. When the event closed, the field had turned to mud 6inches deep, ploughed by the feet of thousands of people jumping up & down for hours to keep warm. Every muscle of your body aching from the wet and cold was real torture only the most determined fans could endure. Concert was terrific. The wait was endless though, with 5 support acts among which: John Martin ( awesome), Talk-Talk (in black pants- white shirts- black tie) were booed and thrown tomatoes at (good comeback though in later years with a new style) ...anyway, it wasn’t the best Genesis concert, but a very unique one of exception to remember forever - No time to realize it was over that the bus departed immediately for another 8hr trip back to Paris, and two days to recover from this physically testing experience...only for the bravest of fans ! - long live Genesis and much gratitude for a lifetime of dreams they brought us. I'm sure some of them had the feeling. After all, even then, Peter hadn't played a Genesis cover on any of his tours in half a decade, and Steve hadn't recorded with any ex-Genesis guys since Voyage of the Acolyte. I'm just hoping a reunion happens again, or at least a partial one. I know Mike, Steve, and Peter are all into it, so maybe if Phil can't be won over they could go on without him (obviously not as Genesis, but a Peter Gabriel tour "with special guests" would be an OK alternative).

Four up in a mini we waited until after midnight before we moved but we were better off than many rear wheel drive cars who were stuck and we weaved through until we hit the track and back to Bristol by 4am. Left the week after for 10 years in Canada and the US. What a way to go out!

I'm 52 and first heard Supper's Ready when I was 18....it still resonates just as much today and makes me weep

Hard to tell who was weeping when at this gig - everyone's face was wet, but some will claim that that was just the rain!!

We were damp, then drenched ,but we were also delighted, and the atmosphere of the concert once it got going was electric!

Brilliant day, got absolutely soaked through, adopted by some Northern Irish folk who had had the sense to bring a tent/rain shelter and they gave me some baked beans to eat. Went off to Uni a day or two later sicker than the proverbial parrot and with next to no voice, which was interesting as I was studying Music and was a singer! Still would not have missed this (or Three Sides Live tour) for the world that year :)

It's funny, although I definitely remember the rain, I don't remember getting soaked! Maybe that's been washed (sorry!) from my memory!

It is so good to hear this, even though it is abbreviated versions of songs...it makes me smile...Genesis was a movement of the fans celebrating the Genius of the band...I along with Millions of others...is connected to the members of this amazing Group of writers and performers...BRAVO ALWAYS...!!!

I'm glad the played Fly on a Windshield & Back in NYC. In my opinion; two of the greatest unknown Genesis songs!

Fly on the windshield is a monstrous song !!! A masterpiece

Me too. I was praying like crazy that they would: to have the Lamb, Fly and Broadway played straight through was heaven. Those three tracks are as good a start to an album as any I’ve ever heard.

Fly On Windshield definitely missed Steve Hackett....him and Phil make that song.
