Very good point about using the basic tools. Perhaps the Pareto 80/20 principle applies here. But we perhaps spend 80 percent of our learning time on the 20% that we don’t use very often.

You could have reasonably concluded the Elbonians were doing something different than the other workers from the first chart. A knowledgeable process engineer or an observant supervisor could likely tell you right away the cause of the problem. There is no substitute for process understanding and observation when it comes to identifying sources of defects. SQC tools are good for providing justifications and evidence for a management decision.

A lot depends on your personal situation and background. In general, a Six Sigma Green Belt is helpful in almost any career, and is especially helpful if you want to work in Quality. But note that there is great variation in the quality and content of Six Sigma programs. Some are excellent, and some very poor. You might want to look at www.six-sigma-standard.com/ to see what a program should be.

Hi nice video, I have a query, I'm a six sigma student and trying to perform six sigma in leather manufacture industry to improve operational efficiency but as I don't know how they produce a leather (i,e; what chemicals and why and how long they use etc) as I'm not leather technician, so do I really need to know to run six sigma project in leather manufacture industry?

That's a big question. Maybe this will help a little: "Improve operational efficiency" is much too broad for a single project. You would do that piece at a time, through multiple projects. Since you do the project as the leader of the team, you'll have to be sure that people who do understand the process are on your team. They will supply the knowledge of what the input variables are, and you will lead the Six Sigma effort to find the important variables, determine how they behave, and apply that knowledge to get the outcome that you need.

+Talal AlQahtani "Sigma" for a process is the number of times the standard deviation of the process will fit between the mean of the process and the specification limit closest to the process mean. Actually, the 3.4 ppm usually associated with 6 sigma really happens at 4.5 sigma. In the early days, one prominent practitioner did not want to call the program 4.5 sigma and incorrectly applied a 1.5 sigma shift to make the name of the program sound better. Hence, "six sigma". Other names could equally as well have been chosen.

Why did you skip the Improve step?

Interesting question. Identifying the needed process improvement happens at 15:50, with more at 16:34. Confirmation that the improvement was successful happens at 17:14. So the process improvement step is done. However, as you point out, none of the tools under the Improve tab in the software were required. The software is structured to provide tools in the context where they tend to be used, if required. Our rule is to use the simplest tools that will provide an answer. In this case, there was a major process improvement completed, as all project require. But the advanced tools under the Improve tab were not required this time. That is often the case with Green Belt projects.
