This is without doubt the most enjoyable ESL I've ever seen. So tired of cheesy or incorrect ESL teaching/tips videos. Just subscribed. Very clear and precise, this man......... AND he has cute cozy lights in his kitchen!

I like them all. My most take away from this video is that I can actually use "delayed" translation time to time as long as they've worked up the meaning in their minds

All your tips are great. The use of collocations and phrases is the best as it involves the student using their imagination and in so doing expands their thinking to real situations they have been in. This I hope aids their learning greatly.

I agreed to it. Learning synonyms can enlarge our vocabulary stock. Or we may find the awkward situation by repeating the same words.

Hi Martin, your simple tip of giving context and letting the students guess the translation is very helpful. I will try and discipline myself to do this more often. Also the circles to aid pronunciation is an ingenious idea, much clearer than one line under the stressed syllable. Many thanks!

Glad it was helpful! I am by no means the inventor of circles above word stress as I learned this from a colleague. Thank you ever so much for the many comments and I hope all is well with you. Stay safe and happy teaching. 😊

Hello Martin. I have watched this episode again and revised all the tips again. I would like to move forward from the given line the tip number one. It is really important to teach the word starting with its correct stress and pronunciation as it will solve further ss' problems in listening and comprehension of this word in the native speakers' speech. Correct stress is closely connected with the listening skill teaching and solve half of the problems when you fulfill the gaps in the very beginning.

Tip 3. Teach synonyms. Try to teach words related to the key word. You will help students to better understand connected vocabulary. Tip 4. Use Pictures. It is vital to support students with their learning style. If they are visual learners, you may use visual aids, like flashcards. Tip 5. Guess the translation. Let students try and guess what translation might be. But make sure that you give them that word in a context. It will give students confidence. When they read, they will try to guess the words rather than immediately using their dictionaries. Tip 6. Teach Collocations and Phrases. Teach other connected words. This will help students to use learnt words more often. If you teach the word 'promise', it is better to actually give the verbs which go with that word, so that students know how to use it.

General you don't teach words with similar meaning together at first. Because they can be confused. Once they know one word well then that is when you teach a similar meaning word. I can remember what book mentions this but I'm pretty sure is by I S P Nation.

I understand that this is a video from 4 years ago but hopefully you can read my question. If the words are all part of an article/reading exercise, how do you activate their vocabulary apart from asking students to just give the definition of a list of words from the article? I think somehow word in context is a helpful tip in my scenario. Curious to hear from you

Hi Martin, thank you for the useful tips. I am a novice teacher, have been looking at different teaching methodologies, I am lost!! You have mentioned delayed translation in tip 5, many are against the use of L1 in classrooms. Also would tip 3 be suitable for beginners, teaching more synonymous wouldn't be overwhelming for them! I will be teaching adults beginner level. Plz HELP! I am so confused

Hi, many thanks for providing us with these useful and crucial tips with regards to teaching vocabulary .however I have got a question I always hesitate to ask, how to present a vocabulary lesson by using ESA method and respect all stages and sequence ( Engage, Study and Activate.) I mean what should teacher do in each phase? Let's suggest the topic of asking and giving opinion or crime terminology and jail and related collocations. Thanks in advance
@ELTExperiences

This is quite a big topic and I think a future video may hello tackle this question. With regards to engaging learners, it is key for a successful lesson. Thank you for your question and I hope to answer it in a future video.

Hi Martin, how can we help our learners increase their vocabulary? I.e. not only use basic sentences but expand their ideas and use more complex vocab.
@ruhangizalekperova7992

May be i will sound very ordinary but only with the help reading you can expand your ideas. No absorbing ideas no creation of them. But this is only my opinion.
@ELTExperiences

I believe that repetition and re-evaluating new language for students could help them out with becoming more aware of more complex words and phrases.

Word stress is not that important.. most times never need to know it. Yeah.. present/present. but most words .. you can ignore it.. just complicates things for lower levels. Makes the teacher feel better.. but really in an out quicker than a fart.
