We have LEOs travel all the time and it is as simple as you say. Ensuring you either have the UFAN or NLETS part if you are carrying on you is key of course. Checked weapons are easy as well. Just make SUPER SURE you do not have any stray ammo or magazines in your carry-on bag. Sadly, we get A TON of that as well. One loose round in your backpack can cause a big issue. Cool video.

Yep - for whatever reason this tends to be an intimidating choice for officers flying to training/conferences/etc.. I have found I actually get bothered less by TSA when it is known that I am a police officer lol
@scottcooley51255 жыл бұрын
I'm TSA, and a single loose round isn't an issue. You will lose it, but it's not going to cause you a head ache. 11 rounds is the magic number, though. That's at the checkpoint. Loose rounds in check luggage is an issue, though.
@scottcooley51255 жыл бұрын
Uhg... sorry, I wasn't very careful in that response, so here's take two to keep it clear. You cannot take ANY round through the checkpoint. If you happen to have some in your bag, though, so long as it's less than 11 rounds, you will only have the rounds confiscated, and you'll be on your way. If you have 11 or more rounds in your carry on luggage, we contact local LEOs who have a talk with you about the ammo. I've never seen anything really happen, you just get a special talk. Carrying a firearm into the checkpoint, though, is (if I remember correctly) a minimum fee of $3,500 which increases based on factors such as (but not limited to) having a round chambered, the amount of rounds in the mag, clip or cylinder, and candor (don't lie to the cop). Also, the LEOs may ticket you, as well. The aforementioned fee is DHS's fee. Check luggage is exactly as you said, just make sure the rounds you're checking aren't loose (must be in some sort of packaging).

Federal law enforcement officers don't just carry only as a part of policy, sworn federal law enforcement officers have jurisdiction on domestic flights and will take action if there is a significant incident.

True, weight is an economic concern. It's also a safety concern because an aircraft takes off, flies, and lands safely depending upon weight plus other variables.

That's inaccurate. If you're employed by a non federal agency and they sign off and transmit the PIN to TSA you're good to go. Federal agencies allow sworn officers to fly armed all the time for both business and pleasure.

I had looked at the possibility of going for some competition training that would have required me to fly with 2 of my handguns and have the need for about 1,500 rounds of ammo. I had decided that if I was going to do that, I was just going to order my ammo and have it shipped and held for pickup at the local UPS office. I don't think you mentioned that the lock cannot be a TSA lock, that is, no locks that the TSA has a key for.
@Six60Four5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I use the KISS method. Padlock and hard case. Shipping the ammo is a great idea for training etc. Most airlines will cave on the weight limit if you can produce documentation that the ammo is necessary for your work. You just have to talk to them and not spring it on them last minute.
@InvestigatorsInCars4 жыл бұрын
Actually, per the TSA site (www.tsa.gov/travel/transporting-firearms-and-ammunition), "You may use any brand or type of lock to secure your firearm case, including TSA-recognized locks." I admit I had heard the same prohibition in several videos and blog posts, but I believe the information is inaccurate. I think your idea about shipping ammunition ahead is right on; the cost of purchasing and shipping would be the same, without the hassle. What I don't know yet is whether you can ship two unloaded firearms in the same locked hard case. If you were able to do so, please let me know. Thanks much.

Hazardous surveillance operations are close surveillance of a suspect that's traveling with one or more (usually more) LEOs placed in proximity (e.g. on the flight, at the airport, etc.) to keep the subject under direct observation. Usually undertaken by FEDs, but sometimes (especially in larger states) on flights entirely within a state (e.g. CA or TX) this may be conducted by state police forces. (CHP or Texas Rangers, etc.) Depending on the circumstances there may be multiple officers/agents that "hand off" the subject as they make their connections from origin to final destination. Can sometimes be though of by participating LEOs as "baby sitting" - but it's not. The point is to observe the subject (without being compromised!) and his/her interactions with other passengers on the flight or while in transit; maybe identify contacts that are worth investigating further. Often this kind of OP is a last minute type of thing, often relying on other activities that only identify additional subjects right before travel occurs. The first few are exciting, the rest quickly become mundane... Unless it turns out you're sitting on a dirt-bag...

You’re saying that you can not have ammo in the same box as your weapon. I believe this is the first time that I have Heard this. Well it looks like I’ll be calling TSA once again. This will be my first time flying with my hand Gun and I want to be sure I’m correct.
@LivingLife1285 жыл бұрын
Reasonable amount of ammo? As far as i am aware of , every airline except Alaska limits ammo to 11lbs . Alaska is 50lbs. my understanding is this is company policies and not law .
@Six60Four5 жыл бұрын
Correct, the weight limit is company policy. The "reasonable" language is TSA. In the real world neither has created an issue as I have found simply calling the airline, giving them a head's up, and producing some form of agency documentation that the ammo is necessary will usually allow them to make an exception. You just have to do this stuff ahead of time and not spring it on them at check in lol
@Jake-ug2mf5 жыл бұрын
Great video Nick! Unfortunately lack of knowledge, particularly around subjects such as these are extremely common in the LEO world. I would love to hear your opinion on SBR’s/suppressors for LE use, I personally love my 12.5” barrel AR with a suppressor on it and wouldn’t choose any other rifle for my patrol rifle.
@Six60Four5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! SBR's and suppressors are great. The funny thing is they aren't great for the reasons most LEOs think, however. I like suppressors not because you magically become a ninja, but because I don't want my eardrums blown out by a buddy during a gunfight lol
@Jake-ug2mf5 жыл бұрын
Six60Four I agree, my suppressor will *ideally* allow me to still hear my radio if I have to discharge my AR, or at the very least minimize hearing damage, (especially if I had to discharge in the same conditions as either the LVMPD Officer or Oklahoma Highway Patrol Officer that fired from inside their vehicles) and the 12.5” barrel with suppressor allows close to the same overall length as the standard 16” barrel which means we have a negligible maneuverability penalty.

Can an local city or county officer carry a firearm on a plane when going on vacation or does it have to be work related?
@Mike-012343 жыл бұрын
What about ATF, FBI, and other federal officers I knew someone who was a border patrol I saw him carry on a plane we flew on for a vacation all they did was check his federal ID no other questions asked. They didn't ask about what he was doing or what duty he was on. I saw him interact with officers not the TSA. Officer just walked him around he picked up his bag at the TSA exit area.

I called my airlines when I flew to Florida they told me I had to have a hard case the mo had to be separate nothing loaded and I had to have tsa-approved locks for them to be able to access it in case they want to check it so I went out and bought TSA locks for my gun case and for the case that I cared e m o n I had to separate setups with in my luggage I had no problem flying from Detroit to Florida but Florida gave me a hassle to fly back and then they charge me 10 extra dollars to fly my gun back from Florida back to Michigan Florida's a ripoff
@Six60Four5 жыл бұрын
Yep - like I said, you can follow the regulations all you want, but it really comes down to what the airlines want you to do. As a general rule, these guidelines get you through (most) of that hassle.
