I think one of Mahitos flaws that holds him back is his fear of death and just losing in general. Nobara even comments how when the going gets tough he runs instead of trying to face the challenge. Someone like Sukuna does not doubt himself or has shown any sort of fear of losing/death. Mahito ended up doubting his ability to overcome the hurdles he was faced with, just take how Gojo after a near death state grown himself in such a massive way. Gojo gets rewarded for not letting fear cripple him and instead finds a way to overcome his hurdle against Toji. Mahito once his awakening happens gets extremely confident but as the fight goes on he begins to give into fear once the possibility of losing is there. Hell compare his death to many other deaths in jjk, almost everyone ends up accepting death with dignity but Mahito is the exception here. He goes out pretty pathetic as he frantically and desperately clings to life whilst screaming/crying. It's a stark contrast to others deaths

Mahito not only as Cursed Energy but is nowhere near Toji's level of skill or fighting prowess. Nothing in Mahito's arsenal is getting past Gojo's Infinity or keeping Gojo from activating Blue or Red. Gojo would be able to kill Mahito without issue

Nothing really, Yuji just had so much help and luck. Gege even said Yuji would have gotten "ripped to shreds" if had he not landed the final Black flash with all his curse energy. Edit-> I massively disagree that Human fear of one another is not a disaster level like the ocean and forest. The amount of curse energy Mahito has is quite insane when you look at what he did during and before Shibuya.

Y’all really be crying for Mahito when Mahito literally has an advantage of striking Yuji’s mental throughout the fight. He got a free black flash off Nobara that gave him 0.2 sec domain. That got rid of todo’s cursed technique(Mahito was cooked if he couldn’t deal with that). Mahito also killed bystanders etc literally right after Yuji had a mental breakdown, Yuji walked into that fight with terrible mindset that was shattered by Sukuna which is further stomped on by Mahito killing bystanders during their fight. Mahito entered the fight fully rested and on a mental high, this isn’t the same. Yuji only started losing the edge in the fight when Mahito started running and killing bystanders which gave him an opening where Nobara conveniently intervened. Yuji and todo were killing Mahito never kills Nobara there(as Todo was guaranteed to show up). Mahito would also never evolve, so he dies or runs away.

To add on what you said, I think he had massive potential but part of what it came down too is how he acted when his back was truly against the wall. He was willing to evolve and evolve but when he ran out of cards, he was shaking, shivering, screaming. In comparison, Gojo got stabbed in the neck, head and knee and without a thought, locked in and learned something he never did before and came back HIM. Sukuna saw a guy who could adapt to any and all phenomena and the most hax character in the series and said "ok let me cook" Kashimo saw an immortal guy and said "I'll kill you anyway" Mahito doesn't have that level of HIMness imo

Mahito's domain/barrier skills are slept on immensely. Even ignoring the fact that he cast a 0.2 just after seeing it once, which is crazy, he made a domain big enough to encapsulate the ENTIRETY of Mechamaru's eva unit, which was several times larger than his first domain expansion. Another reason which is kind of hand waved by everyone is Mahito’s tendency to run whenever a fight even remotely looks losable he does it to a point where it’s a clear aspect of his personality showing that he never really changed or pushed his limits (think Gojo/Toji, Gojo/Meguna, or the best example being Yuji/Meguna before Maki came)

Honestly narratively if we compare Sukuna and Mahito in terms of mentality there’s 1 area in which Mahito comes short. His attachment to Yuji. Easy answer, cuz he got killed. Man pulled off soul perception, understands the mindset that curses needed to access the totally of their fighting capabilities, evolved his technique, unlocked domain expansion, pulls off black flashes (which usually means a curse user has literally peaked in curse knowledge), survives assaulting main characters, physically ascends to a new form and still provokes sukuna despite being violently rebuffed. Sukuna even passively kinda looks at mahito as having great potential and parallels with himself. His death was even moreso for the plot than him losing to the protagonists. Idrk what else you need to achieve as a young curse to be seen as hitting a peak. If anything, he doesn't even have a peak with his level of growth. If the story didn't want him dead, he'd still be wreaking havoc and catching even more bodies
