20:33 - Steve Walsh gives a clear penalty advantage to England for 'No. 3 Red collapsing'. 20:58 - calls time off to go the TMO to check for the potential try by Strettle. 22:05 - TMO correctly adjudges 'No try'. And somehow, in just 90 seconds, Steve Walsh has completely forgotten that he had given England a penalty advantage! England had gained no advantage in that play, and they should have gone back to the original penalty offence
@ghotio19279 жыл бұрын

+Crazy Taxi Advantage is tactical or territorial - the penalty advantage was given about 4 metres out, so territorial advantage is out of the question. So the only advantage England could gain in this situation would be tactical. What would happen if the ref had NOT given any advantage? (i.e. a scenario that would be identical to England getting into a position where he would say 'advantage over'.) If Steve Walsh had given a penalty straight away - I don't think he should have done - but if he had, England would have had two options: 1) tap and go; this would mean they'd have more space as the Welsh defense would, BY LAW, have to be back on their try-line, or 2) take a scrum (no time for a lineout); this would have tied in their forwards AND given their backline more space to carry out an attacking move with the Welsh backline, BY LAW, being back on their try-line, AND would have given them good, clean, quick ball. (That's a lot of criteria to satisfy!) Personally, I don't feel that England gained an advantage that was equivalent to either of these two scenarios. They did get some space, yes, but it was in one small area of the pitch, not THE WHOLE WIDTH of the pitch that is present in these two scenarios. Regardless of this decision, Wales were the better side and deserved to win, and Walsh overall had a very good game, so I can't complain too much about one decision that he got wrong if he got the other 99% right! England could only blame themselves for not doing enough to win.
