England proved too strong away to Wales, a 26-9 win in 2003 showing their intentions before claiming the 2003 Grand Slam on the final day of the championship away to Ireland.

Even with Steve Walsh refereeing they still won comfortably. That was when I realised this England team was special.

Wilkinson’s drop goal is a relic of a bygone era. Some would argue rightly, you just wouldn’t go for that now. Pick and go, release the backs, or just wait for the whistle, I judge none of those options - intelligent rugby in the circumstances should be applauded. But Wilkinson thought in a way that no other 10 thought and he had the technical ability to back it up. For me Carter was the best at running a back line but Wilkinson was the best at reading the game. There are so many examples of things that other 10s just wouldn’t see. See also the chip into the vacant should-be-full-back space against the Kiwis. Genius not because it was a complex move, but because why oh why was he even looking for it? The fact that the Toulon fans revere him says it all. As a Falcons fan I echo the Toulonnais: Merci, Sir Jonny. Not just for what you did for Newcastle, or for England, but for rugby. (And in case there’s a pile on: Carter and Sexton also have legit claims to best 10)

Wilkinson's distribution was always so underrated. Such a good passer off both hands.

A whole rugby vid with no box kicks from either team. Rugby was infinitely better to watch back then!

For years the Welsh had an obsession with big hits. They always tried to show off style yet came up short when it came to substance. I call it the Gavin Henson era.

2nd choice scrum half, 5th choice centre, 4th choice wings and we still won.

Says more about Wales than England at that time. Wales were simply awful in the 2003 Six Nations.
@tollyt74655 жыл бұрын
Stephen Reeds do you know anything about rugby? Bracken wasn't 2nd choice scrum half.. He and Dawson were equally regarded, just different players for certain games. It was only actually at the world Cup that Dawson was finally given the Jersey as first choice. 4th choice wings??? Cohen and Luger were the first choice wing's at all times until Jason Robinson came along, and if Luger hadn't been injured I've no doubt would have been fighting it out with Cohen over who played on the opposite wing to Robinson. There was also talk, confirmed a few years later, that Luger and Cohen would have been 1st choice wings, and Robinson full back. Only Luger getting injured stopped that eventuality. Also there were a number of centres who played alongside Greenwood, and again it was only the world Cup and the need for a big crash ball centre and someone to organise the defensive line that got Tindall the nod..

There were a couple of decisive moments in this game that allowed England to get away - Wales failing to score a try when hauled down 5m from the line (player elected not to pass outside to a 2 man overlap!) and the England winger illegally taking out his oppo after a cross field kick that would almost certainly have resulted in a try if the Welsh guy had gathered. Great win by England
@tollyt74655 жыл бұрын
I was at that game, and you couldn't be more wrong.. Not only were those the full highlights of Welsh play in the full 80 minutes, the referee warned the Welsh so many times for killing the ball without binning any of them, it could have been a highlight video on its own.. They were absolutely demolished in this game, but as with many highlight videos it doesn't show..

Terrible refereeing should have been a few yellow cards gone to England.
