Another great vid! The cathartic destruction of all that garbage probably saved you from what would probably have ended up as some form of PTSD(pickups that suck disorder), where even good pickups sound terrible due to overexposure to cheap crap pickups, but luckily you exorcised those demons and purified everything with fire! 🧑‍🏭. I’ve gotten some fairly inexpensive pickups from eBay. They were no SDs but I didn’t think most people would had noticed. When I first started building guitars I knew I was going to destroy some electronics learning to solder. So, I used cheap parts.

I bought a set of those Yibuy SD invader copies for a cheap ESP rebuild I did and I was actually surprised at how decent they were. Sure they aren’t like the OG but I didn’t expect that for 20.00. Definitely not bad for a cheap build solution.

I get some great locking tuners for a song on Ali Express, I'd toss those on there, and whatever else you have laying around that's waxed and potted, a couple CTS pots, Switchcraft jack, and a CRL 5 way switch and that'd be a budget beast, a killer car guitar or w/e. :P

About a year ago I bought a hot-rail cheapy pickup on a whim because the Duncan Designed bridge pickup on my Squier thinline Tele sounded like breaking pottery. I was quite taken aback how much better it sounded. I went even further and filed the rails flat as they were so domed that the outer strings were quieter than the central ones. This done, and a quick matt-black rattlecan mist later... all was well. It was worth the bother. While it won't exactly set the world on fire, it ain't half bad either for a princely £10. Enjoyed your vid, lot of fun and I couldn't wait see how your hot rail performed. Cheers.

1. Change the ceramic magnet to alnico ones. 2. Wax pot them. You will be surprised by the result. Or invest in a bobbin wonder. Pay back after 4 sets of Di Marzio or SD pickups. Don’t burn em bro !

Are you sure there wasn't a color coding difference on the wiring for the pickup that didn't work? Now that I ask, I feel like you probably checked that, but I may as well ask. I have pickups from two different manufacturers in one of my guitars, and I had to reference two different coding conventions.

Cool test! I just made my first pickups (don't know how they sound yet, the bridge's probably gonna be way tamer than I would prefer, and the neck's got nice value of 6.66k lol, both SC) and not experienced with pickups overall but AFAIK the feedback issues should be tied to the pickup being insufficiently waxed (it did look like that lol). It's mind blowing that it's possible to sell pickups for less than 2e and make profit...

I actually have something that looks like the last one but mine came in different packaging and does not sound thin like that...mine actually has some bass for the price(I got it for 1 euro).The circular thing is actually red and looks the same like yours but tha jack inputs does not(and maybe the cable is not the same length, not sure). Maybe I am just lucky I guess or maybe it is slightly biger so it has more bass(if that makes any sense) or it has better attachment so it gets "more of the sound". I don't use it but I tried a lot of stupid shit.I blocked my tremolo with that(yes I am that stupid) and had an interesting sound on my strat, so mine is kinda usable but doesn't sound great or anything.I have it glued to my kalimba now and it sound just fine. Great video btw.

The funniest thing here is that after watching countless of videos of these fake Invader pickups where they sounded like crap, u actually made them sound decent! Lol... And I was also almost fooled into buying those similar pickups since I found them on ebay with the title "Invader style pickups" and I was like "Oh, cool! Invaders are well-known pickups, so these could be cool!", but then I heard the clips from the tubes... But I hadn't actually ever heard real Invaders, so I had no reference point 'till I saw a vid by some guy who compared the real Invaders to like 4 copycats and they ALL sounded BAD! The real one was hardly any better. It's the harsh tone that rubs me. That 2nd pickup that unfortunately didn't seem to work is apparently a Fleor! Fleors are the cream of the crop of cheap pickups! A lot of people have tested them on the tubes with always great reviews. And I actually plan on buying 2 different Fleors in the near future. The hot rail pickup that u tested is one of the many models Fleor makes too and I plan on buying the humbucker dual rail version. Although I do think that all the Fleors are the same cheap pickups sold unbranded by countless others on Ali/Ebay, but they just have branded them under a name. Still, that gives me some assurance that I'm (hopefully) getting the exact thing advertised. Even that 1 dollar pickup sounded totally fine to me :D Apart from the feedback ofc... I don't think soundwise it would differ much from stock pickups (on a Squier)? 🤔 And that piezo mic did work, right? :D Apart from some distortion ofc... But for about 1 dollar it seemed alright, thou I'm not sure what was to be expected of it 🤷‍♂

Have you ever tried making your own pickups? You can buy all the parts to make a set of humbuckers for like 50 quid and wind them yourself with a power drill and a soldering iron.

My plan was to see what they were like on a cheap guitar project for someone's son or daughter. Thanks to you , I will not waste time and solder bothering. I would give them to a local charity shop but don't want anyone to ever suffer that level of horror so they will go in the trash tonight. Also... real SD Invaders do have all the subtlety and finesse of a baseball bat with nails being swung into your face, but my rusty one from the 80s still howls and summons satan 40 years from its unholy birth and has been everywhere with me. I was not a well adjusted human being as a guitarist back in the day and it's only the medication that stops the voices these days 😂😂😂
