Actually, ddr3 ecc is dirt cheap. Like $14 for 8 gig stick, $25 for 16 gig. It is about two times cheaper than regular ddr3. Because chineese factories salvage low capacity old mem sticks, like 512 mb or 1 gig and they make ddr3 ecc with 16 memory chips per stick.

I picked up an older 4 node, dual socket per node, and 8 cores per socket 2U blade server relatively inexpensively and it's been blazing fast for all of my HPC/CAE/FEA/CFD applications -- things that can make use of all 64 cores across the four nodes. For the price, it's actually served me very well. I've been able to do a LOT of things with it that I just wasn't quite as able to do, in a timely manner compared to before I got this system. In other words, old, used server hardware can still put up quite a fight even against more modern systems at a significantly lower cost.
