I caught tons using Size 30, 28 and 26 in the black and brown foam wing pattern. I thought the copper wire I was using was a little too big so I started using the copper wire from a phone charger wire. The midge pupa that I pumped has several segments in the abdomen and the extreme small wire helped. I don’t know if it really mattered on the river though. Great pattern, thanks for the tutorial.

What size tippit are you using for this fly and what weight rod!?

I’ll fish this on a standard 9ft 5wt, but a better option would be a 3wt for tippet/fly protection. I used to nymph the San Juan with a 3wt regularly and broke off significantly less fish, but I’ve since switched to 5wt to accommodate heavier rigs. The eye on these Gamakatsu hooks are enlarged, so 6x works just fine, but you can also use 7x.
