Hey Keith , usualy i say nothing about security stuff but , here i had to 🥶 If you want to start your dado at a line , you ABSOLUTELY need to to have the back of the peace ( neer you) be on the table saw and the rest like you said slowly and bingo !! Why this way you say ??? Because of the saw direction , going towards you . If you want to keep your fingers that’s the way to do it 👍🏼👏. I just love to watch your vids , cats and your jokes 😜👍🏼❤️🇨🇦

Keith, your work is always meticulous and almost as sharp as your wit. Watching this one in particular got me thinking of pricing and how a piece of painted furniture like this seems deceptively cheap to build/have custom made, but the level of craft involved (and pure cost of materials) merits a pricetag higher than most would expect. Not to talk inside baseball, but I'd be interested to watch a video or two about how you make a custom woodworking business work financially, given all the factors at play.
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Admittedly, it’s EXTREMELY difficult to make a one-off custom piece like this work financially and foresee all the potential problems that will be encountered. It all looks so straightforward from the initial drawing 😂. Bottom line, some are winners and some are losers, but hopefully lessons learned save you on future builds. I do have a video coming out showing why I don’t build end grain cutting boards because of the insane amount of labor involved.

I have debated outsourcing my finishing for a few years now. I don’t have the margins, but I image if you know upfront an approximate cost you can build this into the quote. Beautiful job. It was nice to see your solutions to big project in smaller work space. I share this limitation. -Ben

@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking

Hard maple is preferred because it is hard...much more durable than Poplar. It is also a very close grained wood, so it takes paint better. And the carbide probably got nicked before the storage upgrade when my bits were just rolling around in my drawer 😬😂

Great video. The levellers looked a little unsightly, shame they couldn’t be recessed somewhat into the bottom of the feet for a cleaner look. Overall a lovely cabinet.

Agreed, but the tapered legs were too narrow to recess strong enough levelers into them. 👍🏻

Really well done, Keith. I enjoyed hearing about the design challenges and material choice on this build. Help me out here; are my eyes are deceiving me, or is the HDF plywood that you used thicker than ¾ inch? The darker MDF face sandwiching the lighter veneer wood core is giving off some sort of optical illusion. In one frame I’m sure it is ¾-inch, the next frame it appears 1-inch thick. So, what was the thickness of that HDF ply?
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andreas!! HDF is only 3/4", so must be an optical illusion. 👍

So question for the doorstops. Why not put them at the top and then you don't see them as much?

There are some at the top, too. You need both in case doors warp slightly, so you can adjust top and bottom.

Hi Keith, I am trying to build a TV stand out of 3 30" wall cabinets, with only 2 legs on either end. I see that your initial design (sketch up rendering) had the same design i am trying to achieve. what was your reasoning for attaching the 2 legs under the middle portion of that furniture piece? I will be supporting the under side of the cabinets with .5" to .75" plywood, along with the same size on the top and sides. I will also be needing to support a 75" tv. Hoping to get your input! thank!
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking
@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
This cabinet is extremely heavy and without support in the middle, it will most likely sag at some point. The smallest bit of sag on this piece will also throw off all the door reveals.
Don't make THIS mistake with your furniture business.
