@The MVP interview prep is getting crowded. More and more people are studying Leetcode, Cracking the Coding Interview, etc. It's a good start. However, think about how you can stand out. I've found that competitive programming approaches in codeforces, USACO were even more rigorous than what is commonly talked about on Leetcode. Some of these approaches impressed other engineers that interviewed me. I'd also really consider finding mentors in the industry right now that can mock interview you and give further guidance on what trends there are. As far as what I see as trends, your guess is probably as good as mine. I think cloud and distributed computing is going to go on for a while. Machine learning has a lot of hype and funding but could be risky depending on the application. For projects, I personally always liked doing hackathons because they force me to sit down and produce a product very quickly without spending too much time in my head planning.

In your opinion, What would you suggest draws more attention from recruiters & interviewers? a) Projects b) Collaborations c) Competitive Programming stats (level 6 on code chef, high elo ratings on codeforces, etc) d) something else, I happen to be confused in these times about what should I really focus on...
@michaellee5200
@michaellee5200 4 жыл бұрын
@@amyth_dev For getting interviews, a strong resume with beefy projects is great. Prior work experience as a software engineer and/or computer science major helps your resume standout too. For interviewers, it doesn't matter what's on your resume, but how well you answer the questions. Practice the usual: CTCI, Leetcode, etc.. Your focus depends on your goal. If it's to get a job at FANG, Fix your resume, practice algorithms, mock interviews...do everything you can to get an interview and ace it. Same probably goes for any job really.

I never did internships in uni and it’s been 1 year at my current job I recently decided I should look for better opportunities. It’s been a while since I have done data structures and algo (assume this is where the meat of the interview questions are) Would you say CTCI would be the best way to relearn/refresh my fundamentals ? Also what is the smartest way to tackle the leetcode questions ? Right now I aim to do the easy and medium ones in the top interview questions section
@sjsj

CTCI is still the best first resource you should use, yeah. If it's too easy, move to leetcode. If it's too hard, then probably more time needed to be spent on fundamentals.

Now I have to find my own internship after graduating, I can't apply to co-op anymore because of the restriction. With one year left remaining in my degree, should I just graduate while I study for interview questions and working on my resume? To be honest, no. Not because they don't have enough questions, but more so that system design is way more nuanced than the book goes into. I watched your first video some time back and it was awesome. Thanks for the follow-up. I, however, have a question that deviates a bit but I think you may still have an idea about what to do. I am a Computer Engineering sophomore but my interests lie more in Data Science than Software Engineering. What do you think I need to do to get at least an entry-level role in Data Science at the Big 4 aside from the consistent practice, considering that most data scientists I see have graduate degrees. Some also do not so I guess it's possible. I'll really appreciate your feedback. Thanks.
@sjsj
@sjsj 4 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind, this is not my background and I can't speak from direct experience. This isn't advice but just a perspective: Indeed, most specialized positions like machine learning or data science usually require graduate degrees. And that would be a problem if you were looking for a full time position, but you're still a sophomore. You have a couple of summers to try to score a data science internship. First, and obviously, you'll want to show that you have the competency to work in this field without the complete education. That's always some kind of passion projects (check out www.kaggle.com). Then maybe next year, you can apply to a bunch of startups that you think is using data science in an interesting way -- it might not be Google or Facebook, whatever. Maybe you'll love it, and if not, the year after you'll apply to companies you like more and surely you'll get resume with some data science internship experience already. The hardest part is getting the first foot in the door, but keep in mind the job market follows the 80:20 rule -- 80 percent of the recruiters will flock to 20 percent of the candidates. Likewise, 80 percent of the candidates will flock to 20 percent of the companies. I only got my first internship on my 4th year when I was supposed to graduate. Up until that point, it was difficult to even get a single interview. But the year after, I got interviews at all the companies I wanted. Keep expectations low to start off with, and go the extra mile so you can be part of the 20 percent.
@sjsj
@sjsj 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, and you obviously have to be exceptional to be an exception to a rule. Not to say you aren't, but going to grad school is also an option ;) And that gives you even more time to enjoy campus life and apply for internships.

Hey, I haven't personally used these resources myself, but I've heard good things about pramp, interviewing.io, and interviewkickstart. But I'm curious how you'd not know anyone in the field. Are you self taught?
@TheJephos249
@TheJephos249 4 жыл бұрын
@@sjsj Thanks for the resources. Yes, I'm self-taught with a degree in math. Unfortunately, none of the classmates I know majored in computer science and I didn't get into programming until after I graduated, so I didn't get a chance to network. The main reason I ask is because I interviewed at a Big 4 a few months ago, but didn't get an offer. The questions weren't too difficult, but I was not able to get into a flow and got a bit tense during whiteboarding. It was my first ever tech interview, and even though I watched dozens of mock interview videos and practiced whiteboarding on my own, I don't think that was enough. Having a colleague or someone to simulate the interview with you seems very important, if not necessary, to succeed. But, now I know what to expect, and I definitely plan to get some real practice the next time an opportunity comes around.
@TheJephos249
@TheJephos249 4 жыл бұрын
Also, I remember in your previous video that you practiced a lot with your classmates to prep for the interviews. @@TheJephos249 depends on your relationship with the coworkers. Totally up to you. Not surprising to get turned down, these companies err on the side of caution. Bad hires are costly to them. Instead of joining big tech, I joined a start up 2 years ago and mostly do full stack and ops work. I'd like to join big companies on my next role, but I haven't had much success in interview with bay area tech companies. I understand that the expectation for experienced candidate should be higher, but I'm not sure which metrics they measure on. Whats your thoughts?

Same metrics, but you are expected to score higher on each one. Depending on the company, junior engineers aren't asked design questions and senior ones are.

Hey, I have a final technical round in 3 weeks at a large tech company for a summer internship. I was fortunate enough to actually land this interview and even more fortunate to be asked solvable questions for me despite being weak on ds&as. Is it feasible for someone who’s never really prepped for a technical interview to pass this in 3 weeks of study time? I’m comfortable with my programming language but definitely pretty week on advanced DS&As. Thanks
@sjsj

Weak, advanced, no difference, same fundamentals. 3 weeks isn't enough to learn fundamentals, but you probably already know more than you think if you can pass the initial interviews.

I have 8 years of experience in mobile technologies. How can I interview for a different technology (say Cloud Computing) at Big 4? Should I still focus on problem-solving exercises or do I have to have hands-on experience in the said technology?
@sjsj
@sjsj 4 жыл бұрын
8 years is quite a lot. You would need some side projects to prove you can work in cloud. If you can get past resume screening it won't matter probably, but yeah, convincing recruiters and hiring manager to interview you might be difficult for cloud positions. Best way to find out is to try.
