It's weird being old enough to remember how prevalent it was on Tumblr etc and to now see all the skinny culture come surging back.... it is lowkey devastating. This time feels so much more intense too- all this anti-aging rhetoric x real-deal weight loss drugs + Botox, fillers, etc.. it's just a whole new level of exhausting and unrealistic standards - hoping the next generation can re-unlearn it all

This is truly horrendous and terrifying. I slowly started deleting most social media since 2020, excluding Pinterest and YT. I STRUGGLED with an ED from middle school to about 22 years old. I looked starved and sickly but when I looked in the mirror, I thought I looked severely overweight. I gained about 35lbs when I was pregnant with my daughter a little over a year ago and more following her birth due to stress from a year long medical issue she went through. I'm currently 26, one month away from turning 27. Yeah, I'm overweight but I am actively working on taking care of my body for myself and my daughter, a healthy way finally, something I am certainly proud for. After I had given birth, I so desperately wanted to revert back to my ED way of losing weight but I knew it would harm me in the long run. I don't know how this new skinny culture is even allowed on social media giving the rise in mental health and weight struggles, especially in the younger generations. I'm scared to see what skinny trend will be around when my daughter is a teen. Thank you Abbey for addressing this issue, we need more people like you who promote healthy lifestyles and healthy weight loss!

The young girls worship her and think she is so smart. It is very scary. What makes me the maddest is that in an article I read she was talking about college. She said all she saw were blonde pretty girls and there was pressure to look a certain way. So after all of that why would she want to make other people feel that way. Like literally saying being skinny =happiness. Some people know it’s bad and block. But the young girls take it all in. They ask her questions like she’s a professional. It is very very sad.

I am always so anxious about tip-toeing that pro-ed line when I give advice because my weight loss has all been diet based, AND I was super anorexic in the 00s, so I'm VERY careful. Plus I always tell her "this is what worked for me, but you should check with your doctor." I hope shes not watching this kind of stuff. I had gotten to a size that was not comfortable for me and I was not able to do the physical things I liked to do. In the past year I lost twenty pounds and I am not even close to the weight I was at my worst in my ED. I don't want to ever get that low again and I feel so good at the weight I'm at today! Not all weight loss means ED. But I know for me, having had that issue being at a healthy weight and maintaining it without going to extremes has been quite the journey. I was online shopping for jeans this morning. I was shocked to see the models they were using on H&M. Where a couple of years ago they looked normal sizes they certainly didn't today. Even the size jeans they gave the models to wear were obviously too large on them,. They were sagging left and right, there was no shape to the bodies. No buts, thighs or legs to shape the denim. I gave up.
@sunnygirl546725 күн бұрын
Yep, I noticed that getting worse too. I feel like the models (males and esp females) on more mainstream fashion sites like H&M and Zara mostly look very unhealthyly skinny. Not very cool, I wish they would show different bodytypes, smaller people, people with wider hips and more muscular women that are actually a good example for young women, I mean it's just as important to show rather lighter women as heavier women, but definetely no need to show these heroin chic, super tall and long legged models, which do not represent any majority🥲

I saw other clips of Liv's videos. It appears she was just sharing her WIEIADs, and it all looked pretty normal and healthy to me. She wasn't undereating. She still had indulgences once in a while. I don't see the problem with her. Was it because she said she preferred being skinny, which is her natural body type? She wasn't promoting ED behavior at all. I'd say she was very mindful and intentional about her food choices.

I agree . I find them okay . I like liv . I’ve seen Abby give much worse and accurate advice. That lacks integrity has intentionally shady or confusing links to research that aren’t well sided, and a lot of her information seems to be from the lens of her own eating disorder. I also feel like she promotes anyone who over eats because it leans into what she promotes. So frankly, she’s given a lot less reliable information than Liv Schmidt. I’m not saying Abby has not helped people heal their relationship with food. But I think she does it in a disingenuous way. I think she does intentionally misleading things. I don’t believe that Liv is doing that.

I just watched Liv Schmidt's most recent video, and thankfully yours popped up in my recommended immediately afterwards. The thing that was the most off-putting to me is that when she stepped back far enough the FaceTune wasn't able to tune, and I could see that she was a perfectly normal human being with an absolutely pleasant face that she should not feel the need to FaceTune. Real humans shouldn't want to look like a walking Uncanny Valley. My teenager knows that what they see online is often fake, dangerous, or both. Liv Schmidt's content is the latter. I still worry that we, as a culture, KNOW that it is fake and dangerous, but it still slowly shifts how we look at the world, and of course, I worry about my teen and others.

If people need encouragement to get moving and get fit (not skinny) then calling yourself fat and hearing oink oink in your head is not it. I propose they all go and volunteer a few hours at a nursing home. Specially an assisted living one. THEN you will have more than enough reasons to live healthily and build muscle. You want quality of life. I care for my elderly mom and seeing her having mobility issues is my one reason to get up in the morning and move. I want to be able to enjoy life if I get to be her age. I've seen Liv's KZbin content and I feel like she comes across poorly but the actual tips she gives are not that bad. I was expecting something like HRH collection but it wasn't. IMO she focuses on portion sizes, walking, finding activities not related to food. She seems healthy skinny, not emaciated. If its bad to strive for this body type and be honest about it is it wrong to strive for slim-thick or curvy? Not trying to be confrontational, I genuinely don't understand. Am I disordered or something???

@Gty81326 күн бұрын
I’m not saying none of this is problematic but Part of this is so funny to me because some of these women are not promoting Ed’s and I said SOME literally just eat healthy and enjoy being skinny which isn’t inherently disordered it’s ok to prefer yourself in a skinny body as long as it’s not too far and it’s ok to eat mindfully just because you’re not binge eating on processed foods every single day doesn’t mean that you have an ED and I say this as someone who struggled with anorexia and when people claim that wanting to eat healthy and being skinny is an eating disorder and that leads more to the stereotype that eating disorders are purely based on wanting to be skinny when a true ED is a mental health disorder. The liv Schmidt thing really pissing me off bcs she literally eats enough calories to sustain her body that’s all some people need if you added up the calories in her WIEIAD she’s obviously not “restricting “ she’s just thin ,if she doesn’t want to binge McDonald’s she doesn’t have to she satisfies her hunger in her way, can we stop assuming all women that are thin and healthy have Ed’s bcs that’s just so damaging to ppl with actual Ed’s it’s why it’s so hard to get treatment
@Gty81326 күн бұрын
if it is ok to have a larger body which I do believe is perfectly fine if that’s what you want then it should be equally acceptable to want a thin body.
@smoog479525 күн бұрын
The only thing I can think of why "thin" is back in, like back in the 90s, is possible bc food is so much more expensive now as well as basic, every day, human needs to survive that there is a lot more thin people due to this problem...however with the influencers, I do feel bad about the issues they deal with (we all deal with different problems). I wish social media would reign back, but I don't see it as everything seems to be moving forward to more and more internet/electronic/technology/we're entering the matrix here people...and so forth. @@See_The_Stars Liv has said a couple of things that I find questionable. I believe when she was talking about the tomato she was talking about nightshade allergies. But Abby has definitely made a lot of videos that are straight up bullying and she intentionally misleads people with faulty research. I can literally give you so many examples of it. It’s not funny. “I lost 5 pounds in one week” 5-10x the recommended healthy weight loss per week. That was the first clip from her in this video. For a majority of people, if they’re losing that much in a week especially at her size, they are most certainly not eating in moderation, or if they truly are, there’s a medical concern there because they shouldn’t be.
@HulaMask12 күн бұрын
Losing 5 pounds in a week isn’t as extreme as it sounds when you actually understand how the body works. When we lose 5 pounds in a short amount of time, it’s likely not solid fat. You can lose 2 pounds safely that is an aggressive amount of weight to lose per week. Especially after an extended amount of time. However, you have to factor in that. A lot of that 5 pounds was likely water weight. However, water weight is still visible weight. So when she makes a video saying she lost 5 pounds in a week, that’s no different than a lot of people making videos with similar titles. And perhaps they just don’t quite understand that part of that is waterweight. Or perhaps they do. Because again waterweight is visible weight for most people. So that 5 pounds even if it’s 2 pounds of actual fat 1 pound of undigested fecal matter and another pound of water weight it’s still showing up on the scale. So no, it’s not necessarily unhealthy. And if you actually understood how the body works you would know that. But you don’t have that type of education like I do. So I’m able to look at it objectively. I’ve taken the time to research things I’ve seen in fitness videos beyond what I just watch which increases my actual knowledge. So when I see people like you coming in ready to debate, I’ve already understood why you think you’re right. And I’m more than prepared to tell you why you were wrong and to back it up with actual scientific peer reviewed and scholarly research. I do not think that you are able to do the same thing.

@ dude, 2 pounds is still not healthy for a majority of people. Especially at her size. If you were ACTUALLY educated like you claim to be you’d still find that concerning. That alone is a laaarge caloric deficit, with lots of potential for missing important nutrients especially at her size. Instead you’re trying to put me down for pointing out 5 pounds a week is incredibly unhealthy. Also, I am fully aware 5 pounds doesn’t necessarily mean all fat, but this is old news to a lot of people. Most people are now very aware that claims of ___ pounds per week is usually not fully fat. Do you think that makes what shes doing good? Do you think the people who understand this are the same group most heavily influenced by her? Are you cool with somebody who’s still a) aggressively losing weight especially at her size and b) willing to spread misinformation to people younger and more unaware than her, actively becoming a “fitness/health” influencer. Because if you are, you are not looking at things objectively like you claim. Because objectively, this isn’t health. What you are doing however, taking the opportunity to act like you’re smarter than somebody with absolutely zero context on what their educational background, or experience on the topic actually is. For the record, I have much more of that education than you think, since you assumed based on one singular comment I made pointing out how unhealthy what she said is that I couldn’t possibly be even close to your level of big brain understanding. By the way if you’re actually well researched on this topic you should try polite education instead of assuming, putting people down for “knowing less” (which i put in quotation because that is only your perception of the situation, not necessarily the truth) and then trying to make yourself feel big and smart. Maybe the reason you feel like people are always coming in ready to debate you instead of listen is because you respond to them like that. You don’t come off educated and well meaning, you come off self important and pretentious. Nobody likes that. And I’m willing to bet you don’t either.

It makes me so sad that this stuff is coming back. Like so many others I struggled with bulimia/binge eating for over 10 years and "pro-ana" and "thinspo" online was a huuuuge driver for me. And this was back in myspace days when social media didn't travel in your pocket everywhere you went. I thought this next generation of children was at least safe from the toxic skinny standards. I can't imagine the amount of pressure they face.

I was hospitalized for anorexia as a young teen, 17 years ago (yikes! That makes me feel old). The hospital knew to keep us ED patients in small groups, and to have someone watch us to make sure we didn’t talk about weight, weights loss, diet tips, etc. Because they knew the danger of the echo chamber and how “competitive” ED patients are when it comes to weight loss. I still struggle with my ED sometimes, but I can’t imagine how much harder recovery would have been in the age of TikTok.

The focus on how peoples bodies look (positive or negative) has been CRAZY lately. For example when we’re making videos on what Olympic athletes look like, as opposed to their performance in their sport… it’s getting weird 😂

I love that these women are taking care of their bodies through fitness and healthy food. I wish ppl in the US valued their health. If this content is “triggering” you can block the user but you can’t hide from everything that makes you uncomfy. It’s impossible for the world to conform around one person’s triggers. You have to learn how to process what you encounter and move on. Therapy is great for that.
@sarak421925 күн бұрын
these videos aren't promoting good health though, they're promoting being skinny which is VERY different. It's not about these videos being "trigging", it's about the fact that these videos can lead people (especially younger people) to do dangerous things just to be skinny.

I love how you don't acknowledge the role you've played in this by never acknowledging outright obesity is harmful, that being obese is unhealthy, coddling overweight people, and almost demonizing anyone that wants to lose weight, a reactionary movement was inevitable, not seeing how you've played a part in that is fascinating. People warned you this was going to happen.

I have a female family member who almost lost her life to AN; and the wasting syn that went along with it. I look at pics of her from 2016, and now, and she looks like a completely different, healthier person. She also realized upon looking back at the old pics, that her face looked hollow, and older to her. She says she would much rather be normal sized, than underweight, for the rest of her life. I thank God every day that she made it through it, and learned just how bad it was for her to severely restrict and over-exercise.
